The connection w Utah Valley I thought was being made was our former assistant Jeff Reinert used to be Utah Valley’s head coach when they were a JC. Jeff Reinert was the head coach at Utah Valley before Dick Hunsaker. He then was an assistant under Jay John.

Looking ahead to the start of Pac-12 play... Definitely looks like we're going to catch the LA schools at a great time. USC is young and talented, but don't seem to be playing well together and have dropped 5 games, but did just beat Alabama State to get to 6-5. Meanwhile UCLA is 5-5 and just lost to Cal State Northridge at home. While the Beavs haven't been overly impressive, and the 7-3 record looks better than it probably is, I at the very least like our chances against the LA schools next week.
Would love to see us handle Idaho State by double digits to build some confidence and take both games to start conference play. Could be a real tone setter for the rest of the season if they pull it off.

Could be a real tone setter for the rest of the season if they pull it off. Gianni Hunt is playing for CSUN. Northridge's first win over a Pac-12 team, since the win over Utah in Salt Lake City on the Winter Solstice in 2012 (the end of the 5,126-year Mayan Long Count Calendar). It was Northridge's first win at Pauley since November 21, 2000 (the Tuesday after the 2000 Civil War). The loss ended UCLA's 29-game winning streak at Pauley. Gianni Hunt has not played yet this year. (He is a double transfer, right? He transferred to Sac State.) Hunt came off the bench and played more minutes, except for one starter, Keonte Jones, who left the game hurt. 12 points, two assists, and four steals in 33 minutes.

Time for the rubber to meet the road as the Beavers ready for conference play. Despite what the proponents of SOS may tell you, Beavers had a pretty bad noncon schedule. Linfield and 6 quad 4 opponents and 1 quad 3 — all at home — is not a strong schedule even with games against 3 P6 schools. To their credit though, they took care of business at home even if too many games were a bit shaky. One hopes 3 games won in extra sessions shows the ability of this year’s squad to win rather than allowing lesser opponents to stick around.
I think the 3 neutral site games reflect what the Beavers will face in conference. Baylor is on par with the top teams in conference. Nebraska represents the mid-pack plus teams, while Pitt is more like the mid-pack minus teams. Unfortunately, the Beavers lost all 3 games and none were really close. That those games were Rataj’s first 3 back and he only averaged about 13mpg in them does give some hope.
The problem with this team is they lack a consistent Robin to Pope’s Batman. Akanno has shown glimpses, but to me the big improvement to his game has been getting to the hoop and can he continue with that against better competition? He did get 16 against Baylor and 12 against Pitt, but had a goose egg against Neb. Bilodeau is a possibility for that role, but not unless he can get his 3 point shot back. Rataj is going to stuff the stat book, but can he be a consistent scorer? Problem is it looks like we may have three #3 scorers but not a consistent #2. So when Pope struggles like he did against Baylor and Pitt (24 points combined in the 2 games), who can take over?
I think this team is better than last year’s with the freshmen having gained experience. Center position should at least be able to hold its own. Wright is healthy, and Lake has been a great surprise. I chose 5 wins in the poll. That was based almost exclusively on what I’ve seen of the Beavs rather than quality of other teams in conference (only seen UCLA and Arizona play thus far). So if it’s a down year for the conference, maybe Beavers can get a couple more wins than that. I just think scoring points is going to be an issue when teams concentrate on stopping Pope. Be more than happy to be wrong starting with next Thursday.
