Looking back, check out what they did for Nebraska. How did you decipher that? You're like a Beautiful Mind. /photo/1 Would have hit the score differential, if DaJohn Craig hadn't hit that last free throw. 22 was the number of three pointers attempted and defensive rebounds. Defensive rebounds were awful. 22 rebounds on 39 opportunities. Nebraska also had 22 second chance points to Oregon State's 6, which just cannot happen. Oregon State needs to win second chance points, or it could get ugly. 22 attempts is a decent number, but 16 of those were misses. What is very sad is that that is Oregon State's second-best shooting performance from beyond the arc. What is possibly even more sad is that the effective shooting percentage beyond the arc was still better than the effective shooting percentage inside the arc. The worst shooting game for Oregon State since last year. And the Beavs only shot that bad in seven of the 32 games last year. Oregon State went 2-5 shooting that poorly last year with the only wins against Denver (by 5) and USC (by 3) at Gill. Can't happen this afternoon. Better rebounding and better shooting or Baylor stands a great chance of covering. Hopefully, the bright lights shine on the Beavs and blind the Bears.

Opening point spread has Beavs +15. As always, just hoping for a respectable loss. /photo/1 Is it weird that they organized Wright and Rochelin to be 15, the same as the spread? Was that on purpose? Do we have anyone with a “-“ jersey number? If not, it could be an even worse year than expected 😁

Beavers will take on Jeff Capel’s Pittsburgh Panthers squad due to their 15-point loss to Florida. Capel took over Pitt in 2018 after two putrid seasons under Kevin Stallings tutelage. The going has been slow, but last year the team finally turned it around, winning a tourney play-in game and then upsetting #6 seed Iowa State.
Last year’s team was an experienced one with the #2 through #5 scorers all fifth year seniors. Obviously, this year’s isn’t particularly with those 4 gone as well as the team’s #6 scorer who transferred. The good news for Pitt fans is senior Blake Hinson (6-8, 230) came back and he’s picked up where he left off averaging 19.6 ppg. 5.2 rpg and shooting 38% from 3.
Pitt signed three 4* recruits during the off season. One of those Carlton Cunningham is proving to be the real thing right off the bat. He’s averaging 17.2 ppg, 5.2 rpg and 6.4 assists while shooting 47% from 3. Oh, and he got his first triple-double in his career in his first game. Transfer Ishmael Leggett from Rhode Island rounds out the team’s double figure scorers (15.8 ppg) and at only 6-3 leads the team in rebounds (8.2 rpg). It’s not like Pitt doesn’t have size though with 3 guys over 6-10 who combine for more than 50 mins per game.
Key to this game could be 3-pointers. Panthers have shot 35.9% on 153 attempts, while the Beavers are at 29.6% on 115 attempts. Further, the top 4 in made 3s on the Panthers have shot 41.5% (44 made) while on the Beavs side those 4 have shot just 32.1% (27 made). Last night Florida held Pitt to under 30% on 34 attempts. As always rebounding will be important too. Pitt out rebounded the Gators by 9 including a 15 to 7 advantage on offensive boards.
Another game in which the Beavers will be the underdog. Curious though how they respond after a tough game last night. Pittsburgh looks to be pretty good, but they’re not Baylor good. Obviously would love to get the win, but even it being close down to the wire might point to a more competitive team in conference this year.
Happy Thanksgiving . . . and Go Beavs.

Had myself a little glance down memory lane checking in on the Beavers next opponent. I did not realize that Jim Les is the coach of UC-Davis. Being from Illinois, I remember Les as the poster child for small, pass first, floor general PGs while at Bradley. His senior year he teamed with Hersey Hawkins to take the team to NCAA tourney and win a game. I believe they also only lost one game in regular season. He later led the team to sweet 16 as a coach.
OK, enough with reminiscing — on to the matchup. Have to give Les credit in this age of NIL and the transfer portal because this is a veteran team that has experience playing together. Fifth-year senior Elijah Pepper has been at UCD his entire career and started all but 2 games he’s played in. A volume scorer who will look to get 20 shots, Pepper is averaging 22.8 ppg after getting 22.5 ppg last year. The big difference is he’s hit 3s at a 44% clip thus far this year compared to 32% a year ago.
If Pepper is the heart of this team than Kane Milling might be the soul. Also a fifth year senior, though he spent his first two years with Nevada, he only averages 5.6 ppg. 3.4 rpg and 1 apg. Though those numbers are slightly down from last year and he’s not much of a shooter (26.7% overall and from 3), his minutes are up (28,2 mpg to 32.2). Probably don’t have to look beyond his 6 blocks and 8 steals (1.6 per game) thus far for a reason. He had 6 blocks total over the past TWO years and has never averaged a steal per game.
Look for Ty Johnson to kill the Beavers in this game. I don’t say that just because he’s their second leading scorer at 14.4 ppg nor because he shoots nearly 52% from the field. Nope, it is the “player gets right against Beavers” phenomenon. You know, the one that led to Pittsburgh’s Zack Austen going 3-6 from 3 on his way to 19 points when he had gone 2 for 16 prior and was averaging 6.4 ppg. Well Johnson is 0 for 8 from 3 this year, so I figure he’s good for at least 2 against the Beavers (career high is 3 twice).
Beavers should have the advantage in the front court as the tallest player the Aggies start is 6-9. Last game they brought in one big off the bench who scored 4 points but also had 3 fouls in 7 minutes. Beavers need to punish them on the boards and play some good D and they should get the W.

Pretty sure they made the sweet 16 and Patrick O’Bryant played himself into a lottery pick over the course of the tournament. The most freakish athlete I’ve ever seen looked like 6’8 Bo Jackson on steroids. His name was Marcellus Somerville. He looked like an American gladiator. I’m not exaggerating. I don’t remember all they guys but that team was anwesome and beat some pretty legit P5 schools early in the year. That was before Wichita and Creighton left the league. And before the P5 wised up and stopped scheduling these teams.

Bradley only lost one game to Clemson in Honolulu on December 27, 1985. Otherwise, Bradley was undefeated into the Missouri Valley Conference Championship Game in Tulsa, 22 straight games. Bradley lost int he Missouri Valley Championship Game to Tulsa in Tulsa after beating Tulsa in Tulsa on the first day of February. Bradley crushed UTEP but lost to eventual champion Louisville in Ogden.

The 2006 was Bradley's sole trip to the Tournament under Les. Bradley lost in the Sweet Sixteen in the NIT in 2007, the 2008 CBI Championship Game, and the 2009 CIT Championship Game. After two more lackluster seasons, Bradley fired Les and is still waiting for someone to replace Les.

Missouri State was 21 in the RPI and 19 in Kenpom and got left out. It was Wichita state, Missouri state, Bradley, UNI, southern Illinois, creighton (at 45, being the worst) in that order Missouri state and creighton had to play in the Not invited tournament Wichita was a 7 seed with a 19 RPI Bradley was 13 with a 25 RPI UNI was a 10 seed at 35 RPI Southern Illinois was 11 with 37 RPI That was a crazy stupid good league that year leaving 21 and 45 in the RPI totally out. I would watch the hell out of an ESPN 30 for 30 on the 2006 MVC and how they scheduled only teams in the top 200 of the RPI from the previous season and it made their rankings all explode.

I don’t remember anyone particularly liking the Geno Ford hire when it happened, and he was a disaster. Wardle has actually done a good job in Peoria. The team he took over from Ford had been gutted, and he’s slowly built the program back up. They’re not a powerhouse by any means, but seems like since that first couple of years he’s had them competitive in conference. I think they’ve gotten to postseason two or three times.

I stopped following the Valley after maybe 2010. Still would catch a creighton or Shockers game if they were on tv while I was flipping.
Hopefully Jim Les still has that perfect White/Grey Pat Reilly slick back hair.
Jim and WT could start a charity tournament “Handsome ass coaches, that have seen better days”

If that formula works all the time the new Pac Whatever should do that in basketball when it gets rolling. The NET fixes the issue that the Missouri Valley exploited. The future Pac should do it for baseball, though. So I never knew it was an “exploited issue” I thought it was 10 teams with tough schedules that had 6 teams perform at a crazy high level. Joe did they fix it I’m genuinely interested!!!? I remember the commissioner of the league going on about how if you schedule teams from 75-200 in the RPI instead of teams 200-337 (or however many teams there were in 2006) The key is you still have to win those games. And you have to play true road games against teams in the 75-200 range in the Non Conference portion (something P5s have been able to avoid) They just figured out the odds of beating a 150 ranked team were still 100% compared to a team raked 310 which was also 100% ……RPI rewards that 150 win and punishes the 310 win even though neither game was ever in question.

Wilky — I know, so why did you say Bradley is still waiting for someone to replace Les? Seems like they’ve done that pretty well.
