I don't follow stats that closely but this sounds like correlation to me. Are you saying that you can hide a .240 batter with a lot of strikeouts in a different position and it's not as much of an issue as if it was the shortstop? Its mildly correlation but a large part of it is total AB. SS is the position that tends to be the least platooned on defense. A solid SS will lead the team in AB unless injuries occur. Even catchers are platooned more than SS. Thanks for the explanation. That makes some sense. I stopped playing baseball after t-ball so my baseball knowledge isn't super deep. I always enjoy learning more.

We all have to stop playing the children's game sometime haha

The shortstops on our CWS teams: 2005-07: Darwin Barney 2013: Tyler Smith 2017-18: Cadyn Grenier We're not getting there with Kyle Dernedde. Any of those guys ^^^, or, perhaps more realistically, an Andy Armstrong caliber player, would be an upgrade. I'm hopeful that 2024 will see a player at SS that returns the program to the established tradition.

A correct assumption. Platooning isn't position-centric.
I don't believe any of these MIF were platooned this year.
Jacob Wilson - Grand Canyon U. Jacob Gonzalez - Ole Miss Tommy Troy - Stanford Yohandy Morales - Miami Matt Shaw - Maryland
But then, neither were outfielders Dylan Crews (LSU) or Wyat Langford (Florida).
Rock Stars are in the lineup everyday.

Whiting pitched against us.
1IP 2 SO 1H
His K/9. Is pretty rough but we need experienced relievers.
Probably didn't cost any NIL

Both guys have better #'s than Ben Ferrer did at USC Upstate for what it's worth...

Probably didn't cost any NIL Kyle Scott was Cal Poly's closer last year and pitched a no-hit ninth against Oregon State to pick up his first save. Got McDowell to groundout, walked Bazzana, and struck out Turley swinging and Forrester looking.

And zero errors over the final 46 games! Holy f@#king s#*t! Dernedde is Oregon State's best defensive shortstop since.........? Ever?
And the dude hit what .303 over the final 36 games.
The guy had an awful two weeks in March around the Bay Area series. But you take those games out, and he hit .277 on the season.
Respectfully.............respectfully.................if you believe that Oregon State is going to be better without Dernedde, I am going to have to ask you for what you've been smoking, because you are 100% wrong.
There is no addition by subtraction without Dernedde.
I have heard that Mitchy Slick is working on keeping Dernedde, because he's not a complete moron. Of all the players in the Transfer Portal, the only one that Mitchy Slick is actively working to get back is Dernedde.
Like the whole defense and team in general only works, because Dernedde is nails in the field.
Ridiculous! Straight up ridiculous!

Errors are subjective. There were numerous plays at Goss this year where the official scorer's decision had me scratching my head.
A more telling stat would be chances accepted per game, which actually measures how many balls you get to. The more chances, the more ground you cover, the more plays you make.
Dernedde is an excellent defender. I would like to see much more offense. It did not appear to me that he was good at getting runners in from third with less than two outs. His OBP, SLG and OPS were the lowest of any regular.
You can definitely see that we added an all-turf infield in 2008.

Ridiculous! Straight up ridiculous! I've been more critical of Dernedde than pretty much everyone. Can't deny that he has an incredible year on the field. His only downside is his bat but he showed plenty of life this year. After his low of 0.167 (7 BB) on 4/8 he recovered to 0.248 at the end of the season. Since the Oregon game he is batting 0.326 and 20 BB. No question that if he can keep concentration on the field and play that well at the plate he is a baller that we aren't likely to replace quickly.

His OBP, SLG and OPS were the lowest of any regular. You can definitely see that we added an all-turf infield in 2008. Dernedde hit better than the catchers. It puzzled me that the catchers hit in front of Dernedde. Dernedde did not have a ton of chances to get into a runner on third situation with fewer with fewer than two outs hitting behind the catchers. In fact, Dernedde only had two opportunities to bat with a runner on third and fewer than two outs over the final six games. And Dernedde was 0/2 in those situations (against Arizona in the Pac-12 Tournament and LSU in the Baton Rouge Regional). However, the opportunity before was: And Dernedde squeezed Mikey Kane home earlier in that same game to make it 3-2. The game before, he had an RBI HBP to make it 20-7. Dernedde brought Gavin Turley in on a sac fly the game before that to pull within 10-6. The game before that: Dernedde had no opportunities in the other two UCLA games. Dernedde drove home Dallas Macias to make it 4-0 in the ninth against Portland the game before. So, up until the Pac-12 Tournament, Dernedde had at least one RBI every time that he had the opportunity to hit with a runner on third with fewer than two outs in the month of May. 9 of his 11 RBI in May. Dernedde's had two other RBI in May. The first was his double to score Tanner Smith against Oregon, what turned out to be the game-winning run. And the second was his solo shot against UCLA to put Oregon State up 6-4 in the sixth. I would say that you are probably talking out of your a#*, but I will give you the benefit of the doubt.

You need to look harder. In the WCU series alone there was one you missed. As someone who actually attended the games, there are many more.
If he stays, great. If he leaves, we'll find someone else.

Interesting and surprising list. Just with the eye test, I would go 1) Cayden 2) Bo Phillips 3) Darwin 4)Armstrong 5) Smith 6) Dernedde
