Everyone keeps saying Utah, Stanford and Cal are going to rejoin. Don't think that is likely. No one is coming back in the foreseeable future. So OSU/WSU had to act now. Utah State played in the NCAA MBB tournament in 2019, 2021, 2023 and 2024. It played in bowl games in 2011-15, 2017-19, and 2021-23. It kicked our ass in the 2021 LA Bowl. So anyone who acts like we have invited the Little Sisters of the Poor hasn't been paying very close attention to college sports. No, but USU is being investigated for Title IX violations, I believe. And we are running out of teams to invite and money to pay for them. If we don't get UNLV soon, with or without Nevada, we should seriously explore the merger option.

And add to that, GAG was at USU as a coach less time (second stint) than he was at OSU - what does that say about us? Hopefully we won't be dumb enough to give him a second stint.......... Can you imagine? I know my point is somewhat muted by the fact they hired him twice, but at least they wasted less time in canning him the second time. USU put their big.......never mind! Funny, his last stint is the only one where he is listed as being "fired". And, has not returned to coaching since, as I can see. Hopefully it stays that way, for his sake and any future team.

The people responsible were immediately fired. This is a nothingburger.

It screams desperation.......kind of like us getting denied by the AAC schools and getting USU as our 7th. I think the Pac 2 overplayed it's hand. The brand is not worth what they thought. A reverse merger with the MW is pretty much coming to fruition in a more painful, and drawn out way. Be cool if we get Zags for B ball......not a good baseball conference. Probly stay Indy I guess.

I don't think we did overplay our hand. I think everyone on the outside is presuming that the Pac 2 tried to sell tradition. I'm betting the Pac 2, especially in describing their approach, tried to sell $$$ from various outlets. We can see that from the fact they've put media numbers together, that they apparently have thought about basketball as a revenue source, that they're talking about the Pac-12 Network infrastructure and selling that out already to make $$$. I don't think a reverser merger is ever happening. Will we take more MWC teams? Maybe... maybe UNLV, maybe AFA, maybe 1 more if we need the death blow. But I also would not be surprised if we stand at a certain number, go out and get a more definitive media deal and then retry with some of Texas, AAC.

I have a question... I know we had a nice jolt of momentum after the 4 were added... but why are we moving so fast/in such a hurry?
we have all of next year to finish the rebuild.
Just curious... what folks here thought of the urgency.

You basically have to have the conference in place by the end of this year for scheduling purposes, allowing the teams joining us to give proper notice etc. We can't wait until the last minute.

Just curious... what folks here thought of the urgency. My guess... we have a media partner(s) and they want a conference and the Pac12 wants to set the media deal in writing. Without a known set of members said media partner(s) are not going to set a price. Once that is done it allows the Pac12 to consider their next steps... other applications/fees, revenue structure of old and new monies, conference structure, utilization of the Pac12 properties, etc.

IF we get Gonzaga and UNLV, and IF we get an injunction/ruling to waive the $10 million "poaching" fee, this will be a monumental victory for the Pac-2.
Stayed regional, kneecapped our top West Coast football/basketball competition, and preserved the $65 million nest egg. That's a Little Big Horn/Five Forks scale victory.

They were obviously not as coveted, and their exit fees too high to make it worth the while. Also, behind closed doors was it truly a sincere effort or a bargaining ploy with other MWC teams being left out? I'm super happy it did not pan out and those teams will not get a media deal better than what the Pac12 will end up with. It's not just the $, but the time frame and negotiated terms of the agreement and extension/renegotiations. The Pac12 will be the 5th best conference and IMHO will begin to rival the ACC.

I for one am glad that many of the universities added are land grant colleges, like we are. Too lazy to look it up, the schools we have added - how many are Ag schools?
I also like the western regional footprint. Really wasn't excited about adding ACC schools. We already have done to the MW what was done to us; by adding eastern schools, the traitorous ten can just chuckle and say - now exactly what would have been the advantage in staying?
