My only question is do these kinds of appeals come up often? Bottom line, USA coaching staff didn't appeal within the timeframe. Seems like maybe they should've recognized the difficulty discrepancy before they did? If you know you only have one minute to appeal, you would think everything would be scrutinized very quickly, and efficiently. I'm betting moving forward there will very close attention paid to that aspect, leading into each individual performance.

"Now Chiles has to return the bronze." What if she simply refused? They can remove her name from the official listing, but I rather doubt they can do anything to force her to physically return it. She could tell them to find another bronze medal to give to the Romanian if they wish, but she's keeping the one she has, thank you very much. I lost it somewhere in the Paris airport..Sorry

But a case can be made that the judges screwed up, not the athlete. It is super unfair for both the US and Romanian gymnast. I guess it is sort of like the refs in an NFL game admitting they blew a call the day after the game ended and ended wrong based on their blown call I think it such a sad sign our our time that morons on anti-social media are saying bad things to/about Chiles. She did nothing wrong.

Sadly, yet predictably, the Chiles family has turned it into a racial issue. Sigh…

And WTF was that Australian chick doing? That is what my 6 year did when he used to say “Daddy….watch me”. Horrific. It's unfortunate that people (and the news media) are using this one woman's performance to dismiss the entire competition. I'm not going to try to defend breaking as a sport--I still don't understand skateboarding or snowboarding or any of those other sports--but it was far more athletic and amazing than many other sports that are in the Olympics. So judging it all by that one silly performance is not fair to the very talented and athletic competitors.
What it does show, however, is that there needs to be more strict guidelines in place for a new sport at the Olympics. Certainly, LA better be learning.
FWIW: New sports for 2028 1. flag football (lame)
2. squash
3. cricket (I seem to recall my Aussie friend explaining that some cricket matches can go for days. I wonder how that will work.)
No Frisbee golf?! Dammit!

Best thing the IOC can do now is award both a bronze and call it a draw. Safe face all the way around. Seems a lot easier than fussing with "taking back" medals and crushing spirits.

Sadly, yet predictably, the Chiles family has turned it into a racial issue. Sigh… According to family, there have been people on social media saying racist things in regards to this incident. It's disgusting, but predictable. The Chiles' seem surprised by racism on social media. Apparently, they don't spend much time on social media platforms.

Isn't the tiebreaker in Frisbee Golf a joint roll-off?

Not sure how it's unfair to the Romanian woman. She gets a bronze medal for finishing 4th or 5th.

Isn't the tiebreaker in Frisbee Golf a joint roll-off? It’s disc golf, not frisbee golf. And Corvallis is home to a world champion, so back off

who was around for the 1972 men's gold medal game USA vs USSR? NOW THAT is controversy No controversy at all. That was your basic, everyday f%#*ing perpetrated by a guy who had no authority to do so. It was as blatant a sham as an election in Venezuela.
