As much as I worry about depth with pitching, especially top end talent/swing and miss stuff in the bullpen, my biggest concern is our inability to consistently put the bat on the ball at the plate. We strike out so much, and rarely ever string multiple hits together. As a lot of people predicted, our homerun/offensive power numbers are breaking records for OSU this season, but I don’t think anyone expected us to strike out this much and struggle to make contact consistently.
People bash on Gipson, our hitting coach, but he/our offense has been pretty damn good since he has been on staff. It’s been a weird year for us with McDowell, Caraway, and Kasper being out for large chunks of the season. Macias, Krieg, Weber, and Reeder have all shown improvement at the plate from last year if you compare numbers, and all have come up clutch at different times during the year. On the flip side, Turley has about a 20 point lower average from last year, Guerra has about a 60 point lower average from last year, Kasper has about a 40 point lower average from last year, and McDowell’s offensive production has obviously been almost non existent for most of pac 12 play. Those four guys were major parts of our returning offense, and have simply not done what everyone expected them to do this year. If they can all get right here at the end of this season, we can absolutely make a run. If they continue to sputter down the stretch, we have no chance.

Now we are well known for sitting on the FB. Ducks worked us over with very average Pitchers who threw basic breaking balls. It was almost crazy as dang near every 1st Pitch was a Breaking Ball down the Middle. If we can't prove we can hit one it is going to get real ugly.

Jimmy Wilson talks about going up there looking for one of those get me over breaking ball and attacking it. We won’t even swing at a hanging breaking ball, let’s too many generic pitchers dictate the at bats. Hitters need the mindset of “ what am I going to do to him and not the defensive and reactive “ what is he going to do to me”

I felt at the start of the season and mind you against better pitching we showed the ability to put pressure on the defense and string together AB’s. I felt that had alot to do with Bazzana, Mcdowell, and Kasper getting it going and Caraways ability to just get hits especially when he was at the bottom of the order to start the season. He could get on base for Bazzana and it changed what pitches he saw. When those guys were going it also made it easier for guys like Turley and Guerra to see better pitches because the lineup was just deeper and more potent.
