I love the Beavs but this NIL crap is just ridiculous. It's one thing to have big donors make their athletic facilities a Taj mahal. It's quite another to hand over hundreds of thousands to millions to a teenager to play a sport. The NIL was never intended to be pay for play. NIL stands for name image likeness. Like jerseys, signed autograph, and the like. This isn't sustainable by a majority of D1 schools. But like.....Kansas, Duke, Kentucky, UCLA, UNC.....they've basically dominated college basketball for decades. How is NIL changing anything? The schools I most associate with NIL right now are Miami and Texas A&M - and neither really seems to have drastically improved their stature in the major revenue sports.

Except that prior to NIL we didn't have to pay a guy like Pope 100k to keep him or lose Taylor because we couldn't pay enough. Goes for every non blue blood.

Miami paid $800K or something for KSU's star guard, and made the Final Four. Didn't have to develop its own player. I'd say making a FF is a dramatic improvement.
Also, NIL has been around for less than two years. Give it time. Way to early to make any lasting conclusions. But tons of good mid and low-major players are transferring up, and they are not doing it for free.

Miami and Texas A&M were paying players before. Having it go from off the books to on is not really that big of a difference. I would expect bigger gains from teams that were not bending the rules before.

Just seems like the whole culture around MBB has no class. Not just at OSU, but we should aim higher. There’s no way a film like Hoosiers could be made today. Well, unless I am missing something - Hoosiers was high school - But I get your point. Is that next? NIL for high school students, trolling the middle schools?

But there are a lot of great things about that movie that will disappear from sports. Basketball, in my opinion, is terrible at this, especially at the pro level where players can sometimes dictate whether a coach stays or is fired.

Well there was a college football coach that was fired for supposedly abusing a player and many years later that same coach was nominated to that schools hall of fame. Texas tech and mike leach.

Do some more research and get back to me. Completely different situations. Mike Leach didn’t smack Craig James’ son.

One doesn’t have to focus on that part of the movie to find positive sports themes in the movie. For what it’s worth, I said nothing about Tinkle. In fact, I’ve supported him and argued that he deserves this year (23-24) to show that the program is moving in the right direction. But it appears that he is the old style coach unable to deal with the kids’ egos, and with NIL inflating those players’ egos, I am skeptical about the upcoming season. How can we build a program if we are just a launchpad for kids to find more money?

Something that is not allowed in today’s society. One mistake and you are permanently cancelled. And, yes, it will be very difficult for anyone to build a program here. We are always going to be vulnerable to other programs stealing our players.

We are always going to be vulnerable to other programs stealing our players. I disagree. I think the coach's second chance and redemption is only a sub theme of the movie and not even strictly necessary to the plot. But that's OK. Society hasn't changed. The coach in the movie got his second chance in a Podunk high school in Indiana only because he was a friend of someone who could make that decision. It's still the same. The problem today is that everyone is a victim and few take responsibility for their actions. You'd be surprised at how far a heart-felt "Whoops, I screwed up and I really am sorry" would go in rectifying things. But no one apologizes for anything anymore. Instead, they're the victim of this or that.

There was an article on OLive yesterday about West Linn being confident in their “in house” qb, implying that they weren’t looking for a transfer kid.
