Just seems like the whole culture around MBB has no class. Not just at OSU, but we should aim higher.
There’s no way a film like Hoosiers could be made today.

Pope is getting 6 figures at osu…osu isn’t playing the game of buying recruits. A lot can change with NIL in the near future nationally.

It's a tough situation to be in. It sounds wise to offer a starter 150k to stay and not go to another school or enter the draft, I'd think most kids would stick around with that... but then you are basically setting a base salary for your best players and risk losing kids who think they're getting slighted by not getting a specific $$ commitment that matches their expectations. Losing those two players to teams with better NIL situations stung, but after Jared left, the Beavs nearly tripled their win total year to year. Not saying they nearly tripled their win total because of Jared leaving, but saying having a kid leave doesn't necessarily mean for a bleaker future. We'll see this year if the program continues making strides without Taylor in the fold. To a certain extent, I don't particularly worry if the occasional 3 star recruit has success here and moves on to a better deal... but when it gets to being the norm it'll be an issue. I'm hoping this a bit of a wakeup call to both the athletic department as far as support for the basketball program goes, and to fans/donors who might be holding back support in donation dollars or season ticket purchases simply because they don't care for our head coach. OSU may have been at a long time disadvantage, but NIL exacerbates that disadvantage. Pope did stick around for 6 figures.

Hadn't heard what Pope got. I tend to agree with Canzano in that Shelton may gave done OSU a huge favor on the way out.
Gotta wonder if the general policy in OSU's athletic department is coaches are not to talk about NIL, even with the collective organizers. No longer being a coach here may have freed him from that.
In regards to the salary thing, Shelton/Stewart/Raveno were paid a combined total of about 725k last year. I see CSU's basketball assistant salary pool was raised to 875k before last season. I'm not sure if that 875k includes other support positions or not, so it may not be comparing apples to apples.

Not having Jarod Lucas as a 3 pt weapon last year was a game changer for OSU. Not having Glenn Taylor Jr for upcoming seaon is a game changer for OSU. Taylor and Pope were the 2 best players on the team and they couldn't afford to lose either one, so, yeah, game changer. LOL. Come on. He played the previous season....

Heard that Taylor has some family issues and needed the cash.

And he was Oregon State's best player? I don't know where he would have played unless Oregon State just played silly small last year, though. It seemed like it worked out alright.

Stop trying to kill the messenger here, if Beaver Nation wants to be competitive moving forward it is a P2P environment. Right now not having resources is a competitive disadvantage- and will impact every sport in the future- especially with the demise of the PAC-12. So, if you want to find good recruits, don’t make it a barrier that other schools are offering NIL money and we are offering nothing. Not realistic to believe that some kid will give up significant money just to put on the black and orange… We've been at a competitive disadvantage since 1915, so let's not act like NIL is some sort of game-changer here. I once heard a radio interview with a Pac-12 personality (I forget who) but he broke it down like this: If you had an offer to every Pac-12 school and all things were equal, how many people are picking Oregon State or Washington State? I LOVE this university. I'm a 4th generation Beaver...but at 18 if I had a full ride to any school in the conference I could probably guess I would've chosen to go elsewhere. I probably wouldn't have been the right decision, but it's the decision I would've made at the time. I'm sure other schools will use Shelton's words to recruit negatively against us.....but let's be honest here, they were already doing it. I can think of some scenarios where if I was smart enough to figure out I couldn't make it in the NBA, depending upon my major I might choose OSU or WSU. Outside of that, who knows?

Heard that Taylor has some family issues and needed the cash. That would explain the quick change of plans.

It's probably this simple regarding shelton. Colorado state was 25-6 this last season. The head coach ain't going anywhere unless he gets a big promotion. Tin kle is holding on for dear life. Sheltons future with Colorado state is more secure.

Oldfield saying “It was the first we’d heard about it”. Pretty much sums up where the AD has been. Absent in working all of this NIL stuff hoping it will not matter. Everything ($$$) right now is being funneled into football so naturally WBB and MBB is going to be affected by this. Probably a planned decision by the AD to pick a sport, football it is.

Well if he has to pick a sport to invest in, he's making the right choice. Football drives the bus. Here, there, and everywhere. Football is where the money is. That's why the TV rights will be in the neighborhood of $33 million per team, not because of basketball.
Also sounds as if there is some question whether what Shelton says is true. Barnes, Tinkle and Oldfield are not going on the record this forcefully if there isn't a large amount of truth in their viewpoint.

Barnes, Tinkle and Oldfield are not going on the record this forcefully if there isn't a large amount of truth in their viewpoint. If the Beavs can fill the stadium, going all in on football is the right choice. Strengthen football first, then fix basketball. Barnes, Tinkle and Oldfield said nothing about getting NIL money to basketball and how it compares with the rest of the league. WSU's coach flat out said it'll take 1-1.5 mil in NIL on basketball to compete at a higher level in this league, no way we're spending 1-1.5 mil on men's basketball NIL. Oldfield said it's the first he's heard about it. Barnes said we're doing it the Beaver way (traditionally, since Miller left anyways, in the Beaver way, basketball has been at or near the bottom of the league in financial support). Shelton says we're at the bottom of the league in NIL - All three can have a lot of truth in their viewpoint, there's no need to insinuate anyone's being untruthful. The coaches and athletic department officials who remain have to put the best possible face on this, hopefully this is a temporary black eye and an agent for change.

I love the Beavs but this NIL crap is just ridiculous. It's one thing to have big donors make their athletic facilities a Taj mahal. It's quite another to hand over hundreds of thousands to millions to a teenager to play a sport. The NIL was never intended to be pay for play. NIL stands for name image likeness. Like jerseys, signed autograph, and the like. This isn't sustainable by a majority of D1 schools.
