UA made some big 3’s to win that one at the end. Big time shots. The story in this one is (again) the TO’s. You’re not going to go on the road, especially McHale, and cough up the ball 19 times and going to come out with a win, at least not very often. UA was +8 in possessions on turnover differential. I’d also minimize TvO bringing the ball up court against a quick defender, because she gets picked A LOT. She needs help in that situation. Anyway, it is what it is and TO’s continue to be a weakness of Rueck coached teams. That said, it was good to see AJ play well and get some needed confidence back. Beers was solid again, hard to believe she is just a freshman. PAC-12 freshman POY? I wouldn’t bet against it.
I also thought Syd Wiese did a nice job on the color commentary for the game.

Hopefully the girls keep playing hard and together. That was 37 minutes of pretty good basketball. We’d be 3-1 in Pac-12 right now if we learned how to close out games. Arizona’s the more veteran, athletic basketball team and they looked like it down the stretch. Everyone who played over 17 minutes for them was either a senior or fifth- or sixth-year senior. Bendu is starting to look more and more like the player we’d hope she would be. Hopefully she can keep the turnovers down and get her FG% up a little. Really, really need to get better and more confident in late game situations because that’s cost us two really important games. "We’d be 3-1 in Pac-12 right now if we learned how to close out games"....and...."Really, really need to get better and more confident in late game situations because that’s cost us two really important games." You would think a Power 5 team with OS's reputation and coach would have practiced how to handle these crucial late game situations wouldn't you? Apparently not based on this showing today....I mean it's pretty simple too---10-11 pt lead with about 3 min. to go on the road against a ranked opponent----work the clock down each possession and then either drive the ball to the hoop and get fouled or get it in to a big and let them go to work and get fouled and salt the game away with FT's!....and you've got to have practiced a couple of set plays to get a good shot off from a side-court inbounds with a few seconds left in the game don't you think.....again apparently not----that last inbounds play was pathetic---I'm amazed she even got a shot off before time expired! The women played a great game to put them in position to win but the coaching staff let them down at the end----sorry---no other way to put it.

A different perspective… having watched this team in person vs Duke… they are remarkably better now…. If we brought the same game we brought against Duke to AZ, we’d have been blown out of the gym tonight.

In bounding the ball has always been a strength of SR's teams while at OSU. But this year there have been a number of problems setting things up for getting the ball in to play.
I wonder if the coaches lost track of time out's that they had. Maybe they thought they only had one left? Dunno.
Second game against a ranked team where they didn't just play well but played better than the other team for the majority of the game.

I don't know if you all remember at the end of last season, OSU started having Ellie Mack bring the ball up from back court, very successfully I might add. We have other players who can bring the ball to the front court. AJ is one of those players. TvO "shows" the ball to her defenders far too often, and hasn't learned how to use her body to protect the ball. This is the #1 improvement TvO must make if she has any hope of playing beyond college. The good news is that next year we have two pure point guards added to the roster. And we'll have Martha as well. Not sure why Martha is getting zero minutes.
The good news is that outside of our turn over issues, our offense and defense in the half court was very good. Syd Wiese called that out multiple times. Team is improving, and coaches need to fix the ball handling turnover issues, particularly bringing the ball to front court under pressure from solid defenses.

And the "good news" (your words) is the half court offense and defense was very good. Of course, that is Scotts style to run half court sets while everyone else is heading towards the quick run and gun transition model.

Last night sucked, biggest let down I ever remember watching OSU women’s hoops. Blame for everyone in the last 3 minutes. Rueck has to cal timeout when the lead gets cut to 5, and it’s inexcusable he didn’t call timeout when it got cut to 2. Transition defense was awful, you can’t give up transition 3s in that situation, and as everyone knows we did. Offensively we would have been better off holding the ball for 30 seconds and kicking it into the second deck.

I'm a long time season ticket holder, and don't just think about today's game, and only this season. I can see progress being made this season from where we started. The team played very well yesterday except ball handling. All other aspects of this team's performance were best we have seen all season. Our biggest issue is taking care of the ball. That is why I pointed out that we have two pure PGs coming next season who are adept at taking care of the rock. I haven't given up on this season at all. OSU still has many opportunities remaining to win some key games. But I do believe we have a great core in place going into the next 2 seasons that give OSU the opportunity to return to the upper echelon of the PAC-12.

Good thing Jamie Weisner isn't on the team anymore. She would've punched a locker after the game and broken her hand. And Colorado beats Utah? ?? WTH?

Good presser. Barnes gives a good summary of the game with not a lot of CoachSpeak. Gave nice kudos to Marotte and Beers. She’s done a great job at a school that was a Pac-12 doormat not so many years ago.

Yeah, I think Emily Codding was the main ballhandler as the season wore on...Tea Adams had been playing a little less and it was obvious that TVO was not up to it. Yeaney is actually good at bringing the ball up, beating defenders and sometimes pushing the pace. She just needs to make a few better passes/decisions when she gets the ball past half court. I guess AJ could and maybe Aaron. I think it was a big mistake to put the ball in TVO's hands so much at the end there. She is a below average ballhandler and you are absolutely right about some of her tendencies. Every Pac-12 coaching staff and team knows TVOs weakness with the ball and usually forces several turnovers. I cringe when she has the ball for more than a quick pass or shot because the longer she has it, the more I expect a turnover via her dribble or a forced pass. I just have seen no real improvement in TVO's game. Same bad ballhandling habits, too often makes lackadaisical passes and too often tries to force the issue in the half-court offense when there's no real opening. Add the fact that she is not really living up to her reputation as a great perimeter shooter yet this season (especially against the stronger teams) and she's sometimes not really adding much except for some good intangibles and all-around play.

It was a perfect storm of big time Arizona 3's, combined with poor execution, and even worse use of timeouts. Hopefully the 'film' review will prompt some reflection by Rueck on how to use TO's in that situation, especially on the road against a quality opponent.. After the Mitovich foul at 3:24, there were 204 seconds remaining in the game. In that span UA scored 19 points / OSU scored 4. OSU's first timeout during that period was with 13 seconds left in the game.
