Some of you have this weird obsession with making up excuses for poor coaching or performance of pretty much anyone wearing a Beaver logo. Beaver players and coaches aren't infallible, sometimes they're just not very good at their jobs. No, that's not it. You guys think that we have a "love affair" with Tinkle, and that if we aren't screaming nonsensically for his dismissal, then we love him or think he's the cat's pajamas. That's not really the case. We see that there are a lot of reasons why we are at this point. We see what changing a coach every couple of years has done for the program. We see that the climb back to respectability has been very difficult, much more than you guys like to admit. We also see the money issue. We need a lot of money to really improve the program. If you get rid of Tinkle, pay him. Pay our next coach more. Update everything. Spend more. For what? A guarantee? Nope. Fact is, Tinkle has done both better and worse than we expected. Some of us are comfortable with what he has done and what he can potentially do. And others are not. You can sit at your computer and spitball all day long, but to change a coach you have to have real answers. Real cash. Real candidates. If it happens, it happens. If it doesn't, why bother complaining about it? Go give OSU the cash.

How about a winning overall record? There must be more Bushnells out there. There are no Bushnells in the Pac 12. Us and WSU would be them I guess. As far as overall record goes, there were 2 very bad seasons that put his record 47 games in the hole. The first was basically out of his control, set up by a couple years of poor recruiting results before he got here and being hired after recruiting season had ended, his 3rd season here had no recruits from the previous coach and the “experienced” kids (those who could play…injuries) only had 1 year under their belts. The second bad season was basically on him. Anyway, 47 games in the hole is a lot to make up.. he could go 5 games above even for the foreseeable future and you could still gripe because you are focusing on the easiest metric that would be making him look bad.. the Riley haters did that for years even while his teams were going to bowls and winning them. There are things to gripe about, but the overall winning record is a slanted one. Nuclear actually started this thread griping about his teams having had a lack of offensive play running… that’s legit. I’d add his teams have typically had difficulties with breaking the press and getting the ball inbounds in a timely fashion. Interestingly enough, most of those complaints did not apply to the second half of the Elite 8 year, so unless he just changed his whole offensive strategy for 3 months (which almost seems like it did happen) there’s a different issue. He had two very bad years, the rest have been seasons most fans here could only dream of for the better part of two and a half decades. I don’t want to see last year ever happen again. I’ll chalk it up to poor recruiting decisions due to no in person contact because of Covid, unless it happens again. For now, there’s a season to play, one of the youngest college teams in the US is showing heart and flashes of playing well, no real need for negativity right now. The Fire Riley crowd would always add in the 1997 and 1998 seasons, even though those were amazing results considering what Riley inherited. 47 games in the hole. If you take either away, Tinkle has a winning overall record. If you take both away, Tinkle is 115-87 (.569) overall. Riley II's overall record was 85-66 (.563) and Riley's total Oregon State record was 93-80 (.538). It is almost literally the same argument rehashed. It was a stupid argument in 2014, and it is still a stupid argument.

Yeah guys! If we ignore the bad seasons he's great! What lol If you ignore the misses Shaq had 100% ft% Steve Carlton went 10-19 in 1970 and 13-20 in 1973. He's one of the greatest pitchers in MLB history. Luis Tiant went 9-20 in 1969 and 1-7 in 1971. He's the greatest Cuban-born pitcher in history, and probably should be in the Hall of Fame. It is possible to still be a great player if you ignore the bad seasons. In Tinkle's case, it is possible to be an above-average coach even with two bad seasons in an eight-year stretch where he has outperformed every OSU other men's basketball coach in the last 30 years. And Shaq could have shot 20% on his free throws instead of the 52.7% he did shoot, and he still been one of the greatest centers in NBA history.

Yeah guys! If we ignore the bad seasons he's great! What lol If you ignore the misses Shaq had 100% ft% There's a HUGE difference between ignoring and understanding. None of us want bad seasons. Thus far Tinkle's teams have come back from bad seasons. The Elite 8 appearance kinda earned him 1 whiff with a mostly new team, although I'm fairly certain none of us like what happened last year, some can at least try to understand it. This year is a critical year for him, so far it seems to be a noticeable improvement - but it is early yet. Some here who complain about people "ignoring" individual bad seasons are themselves ignoring the two and a half decades of losing prior to Tinkle's arrival. It all boils down to Context. OSU was a crappy team for a long long time. OSU has been to the Tournament twice in the last 6 times it was held (was possibly on the cusp of one the year there was no Tournament). The only teams that have topped that (uo,USC,UCLA,UA) have all been accused of cheating during Tinkle's tenure here.... now cheating is something I'd immediately can a coach for if there was evidence of it.
