Something came up today, and I wondered what would be your minimum qualifications for a new assistant coach for the Beavs WWB program. Would a successful High School Coach make your qualification cut? If not, how much college experience would be your minimum standard? Would your coach need to have experience as a player at a professional level (this includes oversees)? What other qualifications would you consider a 'must'? Would you want a west coast person, or are you ok with the coach coming from other regions, or even countries? What would be the number one talent/ability/characteristic you would be looking for from the new coach? Would Scott Rueck have made your qualification desires before he was hired?

What do you mean by 'something came up today'? You mean in a conversation you had with somebody and this topic came up, or did you mean you heard something?

Someone brilliant, dynamic and independently wealthy so they don’t need a salary, would be nice.

Able to relate, in a special way, to all kids/ families everywhere... In other words, a basketball version of the greatest recruiter on earth !

We are a successful p5 program that is miles from where we were when Rueck was hired. Rueck was also hired as a head coach, very different than an assistant. Nobody else in their right mind would take the job. No high school coaches. For an assistant of look for a candidate with d1 coaching experience. Possibly mid level conference. Experience with recruiting a major bonus. Don't really care if they were a pro. They can come from where ever, a different region could be beneficial. #1 is buying into the program and how it works and having the ability to effectively communicate that to potential recruits.

The Beavs have one coach (Jonas) with 17 years of Division 1 coaching, and another (Katie) who has been with the Beavs for 5 years, with a year of grad-experience and a year at a smaller college. Does the new coach need to have more experience than Katie? Are your two experienced coaches not enough to bring in another coach without as much experience? I'm just asking. I know in my mind I would really like to see a super recruiter.

An experienced college coach, with some track record of recruiting success is what I would look for. On court strategy is much less of a requirement, since that is SR’s strength. I don’t think geography is all that important. I also don’t think gender is critical, as long as KF is on the staff. But I do think the next assistant hired will be female. Would be great if it were an alum, but I don’t think that candidate is out there right now. Devon Hunter is probably the closest, but very inexperienced at this point.
We just lost an experienced coach and recruiter. Both JC and KF are also seeking other opportunities. Either one of them could move on tomorrow. There is no way that the Montana job is the only one they are exploring. It was just the only one we heard about.
Plus, UO is seeking 2 assistant coaches, so competition for BH replacement will be tough.
It will be interesting to see if SR takes time to find the exact right fit or if he moves quickly to backfill.

KF was folding towels in the basement at Montana when she got the call. That evidently was "good experience!"

I think having a direct connection to George Fox as head coach is critical - done us good in two sports!

Whomever Scott feels is the right fit. Not necessarily an ex osu player. Someone with the same values as this current staff, but may bring something to the table that the other assistants don't bring. I don't have a set qualifications for coaching experience...whatever Scott feels is appropriate.

I would like a better than average recruiter, who can relate well with today's players, social media savvy, and with International connections/recruiting experience.

Well...if it’s a George Fox connection, that would make me the perfect candidate with my MBA from GF in 1998!
