I don't think it's insurance for AA at all. Their games are very different, at least coming out of HS. AA liked to play face up around high post, and didn't get very physical, where JM plays with her back to the basket and her body pinned against a defender most of the time - watch these highlights:
In essence, she's an old-school 5 in the Ruth mold - I don't see anybody on the roster that's not a senior that fits this role.
From my view, this is Rueck for for the full title run. You have to be able to play different styles to win it all, and one of those styles is being able to match up physically with a Baylor, Miss St or L'ville. Uconn is missing that this year and is in trouble, and I suspect it is still what will limit the ucks late in the season unless they get fortunate with matchups.
Rueck isn't just recruiting size, he's picking up a full set of chess pieces.

Rueck's 2020 recruits: 6'9", 6'6", 6'3" Tinkle's 2020 recruits: 6'6", 6'3", 6'2"
That just has to be a first - not just here, but anywhere.

I think that bennyskid meant in his post above to list the 2019 recruits where it reads 2020 recruits. Jelena, Kennedy, and Taylor will all likely all be on campus in Corvallis in less than five months in order to participate in the 2019 summer BEST Bridge orientation program and begin to acclimate to life as an OSU student-athlete. studentathlete.oregonstate.edu/best-bridge-program

FIBA U18 European Women’s Championship - Serbia v Spain
This link provides both the full game as well as a box score for Jelena’s game vs. Spain this past summer. Serbia won 58-47 in what was considered an upset. Spain’s bigs are headed to Utah and Ohio State, so the competition was power 5 level. The Ute, #12 in the game, was Aquino’s former teammate at Ribet. Jelena played 31 minutes and had 11 points (5-11 FG, 0-1 3FG, 1-2 FT) and 17 rebounds. Her team was +22 with her in the game and -11 with her out. That is a very impressive stat as well as her efficiency rate of 20. The worse stat is the 5 TO. She seems fairly mobile, but struggles to get up and down the court. I think she may be less of a project than Trish. Conditioning will be key. She can become very, very good.

There may be “power five” recruits on the floor but the caliber of play in that video is far, far from NCAA D1 level.

I like one thing out of all that I am seeing, and that it her "it's my ball, no matter who else wants it" attitude. She is going to have to learn how to stay out of foul trouble, I think, when she goes up against some of the elites in the Pac-12, because she is willing to throw a few elbows, push off to make space and she gets a great grip on the ball off the boards but will run over some people. Having said that, like the fact that she's not only tall, but she is solid and takes nothing off of anyone.

She has a very strong frame, and uses it to post hard. She nearly falls over when she goes to post so hard and the defender “pulls the chair” at one point. I have to say I am impressed with her frame and mobility. Offense will come with Rueck and the staff.

My guess is that Scott will redshirt her next year, so that he'll have a big who is 2 years behind Morris and 1 year behind Aquino, Brown, and Jones. If she's somewhat of a project (and I expect she is), that 1 extra year of conditioning and getting used to the pace of the game at this level will pay big dividends down the road.

There's no way she redshirts. She has excellent hands and passing skills. She can put the ball on the floor and back in or spin to the bucket. She can reliably hit a layup, better than Hamblin and Grymek even as seniors. She's an aggressive rebounder. This is all obvious from her video. Yes, she'll have a lot to learn, but these basic skills are far superior to Grymek and Morris already. Apparently she has an older brother (Luke Mitrovic) who is a pro player in Europe, and that's exactly the formula Rueck likes for building competitiveness in a younger sister. She's not a "project", by any means. She'll contribute in her first year.

Keep in mind - none of these wonderful ladies is going to be good for more than a few minutes at a time until their bodies mature and they have a couple years with our ace trainer. It takes a lot of conditioning to move a 6'9" body around the court and play with the physicality desired. So, they are all going to get spot play to start, and Kennedy is the only one I expect to break into the regular rotation.
Assuming Jaz continues to develop and I'm right about Kennedy, we'll have a 9-main main rotation (Destiny, Aleah, Mik, Kat, Taya, Maddie, Janessa, Jaz, Kennedy), and four girls playing spot minutes. Maddie and Jay will be seniors, so the next year you'll see our new bigs get into the regular rotation.

Agreed that she probably doesn't redshirt; she's an asset even just to come in and push around the other team's bigs for few mins and wear their legs down.

Well, we shall see, won't we? I just don't see the advantage of having all your bigs clustered into basically one class (with Morris a sophomore), whereas I definitely see an advantage to spreading them across different classes. Plus, I'm not ready to put much stock in videos of players at that level. This level is markedly different - just ask Simmons.
Anyway, if it does happen, you heard it here first.

I agree that having 4 bigs in one class would not be very productive for a few reasons. Having Jelena in 2020 would work better in terms of depth and class size. She has a lot going for her. For 6’9”, she has great hands, a strong, sturdy frame, and she is pretty mobile in the half court. A year of adding to and strengthening her offensive arsenal and working on conditioning and foot speed would go a long, long way. She is also a natural rebounder, which is something that can’t be taught. She has a lot going for her - and came to the right place to add to her game and become a great player.
