And God help us if Destiny Slocum isn't the second coming of Sue Bird. The expectations here are through the roof. That's for sure. I know she won some recognition as a freshman at Maryland, but really her freshman stats are pretty modest: 11 ppg scoring, but only shooting 39% from the field, and 37% from 3. 70% at the FT line, so she's not a great shooter. Her assist/TO ratio is only a bit better than Pivec's. Plus, she's pretty short, 5'7" if one is generous. Nevertheless, high expectations. We'll just have to see. They really do not need her to be a scorer. I personally never cared much for scoring pointguards. What this team needs is a facilitator with ball handling skills.

I would say that at 37% from the 3 point line she is okay to be one of the outside shooters that Scott likes so well. Team that up with her excellent passing, quickness, etc. and you have an outstanding addition to the team.

" Some recognition" includes McDonald's AA (we've never had one), Jordan Brand, Gatorade POTY coming out of HS and National Frosh of the Year (moral equivalent of what SI won with the 'ucks), Big Ten Frosh of the Year, Second team All-Big 10, etc, etc. Recruiting rankings (all of them - consistently) put her right in the SI neighborhood. Expectations here take into account the above + outstanding coaching.......and yes, have probably gotten a bit out of hand, but I think her past track record means she is a Day 1 starter for the Beavers, and that is saying something. Go Beavers!

I hope Destiny lives up to expectations, but I think that AG will significantly better next year and could definitely find minutes at the point. Both of our freshmen came through big for us this year.
Here is something to think about, how good is next year's sophomore class be with Destiny (redshirt) joining Taya and Aleah.

Destiny has been practicing with the team for a year now. Destiny's statistics in the Maryland offense are not 100% transferable to OSU's offense. Rueck will put Destiny in a position to maximize her abilities to contribute to the team's offensive/defensive goals. I saw a number of her games on television when she played at Maryland. Destiny will be an incredible addition to our team, and, frees up Pivec and McWilliams offensively. How Destiny fits into our defensive schemes remain to be seen.

Yeah, there’s that National Freshman of the Year thing that she won. I do believe that everyone should keep a level head about any recruit, but Destiny was a top 10 recruit coming out of high school, and backed it up her first year of college by - in the eyes of the national media - outshining the other few that were ahead of her in that class. This against the best competition in the country. I think there’s reason to be pumped. Why wouldn’t we get excited?

Thanks Thickhead for the Maryland vs UCONN Video. I saw enough to see what a great addition Destiny Slocum will be to our offense. She really can handle the ball, and distribute. If we had someone this season who could penetrate like she does, our 3 point shooters would have had a whole bunch more open looks.

Saw about five minutes of the UCONN v. Maryland video. Hard to believe that was a freshman leading the team. Such poise, court vision and ball control.

Raves for Destiny throughout this game. If you can't admit that there is really only one candidate for the starting PG next season and that that candidate is DS, then ... you're blind? Seven games into her first year of college and she drives this Maryland team. Highlights: 10:26 -- Assist 12:00 -- Assist 21:51 -- Layup 23:50 -- Assist 27:38 -- Shot 28:25 -- Replay of shot 48:28 -- 3 Pt Shot 49:50 -- Great pass 53:05 -- 3 Pt Shot 1:06:43 -- 3 Pt Shot 1:07:25 -- Replay of shot 1:08:20 -- Assist 1:11:30 -- 3 Pt Shot 1:12:05 -- Replay of shot 1:12:29 -- Reverse Layup 1:15:25 -- 3 Pt Shot

Each position requires a different skill set. The point is unique in that their actual value is not often measured by stats. The most important role of the point is to maintain an offensive flow and that even transcends the common basketball skills usually attributed to a point such as ball handling and passing.

My biggest take away from the video is that someone needs to get Destiny some new shoes. She boinged around the court back then just like she does now court side. Obviously someone conned her into getting some shoes with springs for soles. Standing in one place, boing boing boing boing. Terrible what she has to go through every day!
