If there is one thing this staff is better at than the previous one, it's promoting themselves. As a school, we are way better about letting people know about our successes now (real or imagined).

Lol... never a right or wrong issue... just stated pub was bigger than "potential" signee who's never played a down of D1 football. Signs or doesn't, how he announced was big. I agree the press is good. I will not ever not want to see that. But I want to see these kids making it into school. So far, when it is all said and done, GA is not pulling in any better recruits than Riley did. It sure FEELS that way. we go through recruiting, we get big commits from Shroud Thompson or Christian Wallace type guys. our rankings are high... then everbody goes Simi Kuli on us and nobody is on campus. The end results is shame sh!t different coach. I don't want to be a total wet blanket or anything. A commit is better than nothing!!! it gives us attention we need... But we need to be getting these kids on the field too. We haven't been. I did a little research on this. For the past 10 years we typically lose 2-5 commits each class and most of the time the lost commits have been the highest or close to the highest recruits. Nothing has changed here with a new coaching staff (not that we can't expect it to). The ranking per recruit has increased slightly with the current staff when compared to the previous staff (on 247 at 0.8340 compared to 0.8238 since 2007). I am inclined to think the slight increase is too small to draw any conclusions. To retract a little this small difference in most years is the difference between having a class rated in the 30s to low 40s versus a class rated in the 50s with a baseline of 20 commits (maybe it is significant).

I am a big fan of the increased social media presence and other things....even if I do tire of the "best college town in the Pac-12" stuff.

Our highest rated recruits have typically been high risk kids who other schools have backed away from. Until we win at a pretty high level consistently, I don't expect that to change.
Isaac Garcia, Thompson and Wallace last year. Daniel Green is another example this year. All set to go to USC and then suddenly he decommits? From USC. hmm... Now we're in the mix with Kansas State. One of us will sign him and cross fingers that he can get in the door or we will hear about him playing at a JC. Same story every year.

I don't think it's really a matter of promoting themselves. Mike Riley has one of the highest twitter followings of all coaches in college ball. Right now OSU fans are excited about a new coach, give it a few years and perceptions may change.

Could be wrong, but I don't see Calvin actually signing with OSU after that article. After seeing his commitment and knowing that info, it's pretty obvious he was doing something he didn't feel whole hearted about. I hope I'm wrong, but at least it brought some attention to the program!

A few months ago, there was this article on O-Live about how cutting edge and innovative recruiting was now at Oregon State, citing maps tweeted out showing where coaches were going and other things. Riley (or the people running his account) had been tweeting out something very similar for years before. I don't know what the numbers or impressions are or anything like that, but, much like Calvin committing on national tv, even if he ends up going elsewhere, it gives the feeling that OSU is recruiting better or more effectively with top talent, despite the fact that we are still consistently in the lower half the conference when it comes to recruiting classes.

Good god, if baseba1111 ends up right about this, it may be the death of this message board. I can't wait for NSD now. You notice he couldn't wait to say "I told you so?" If he's wrong, I think he should pay us -- there just has to be some kind of GAP.

If it's a matter of mom wanting to watch him play in person, I think we can solve this by sending her our future schedule, Nebraska's future schedule and a U.S. map. Boom. Case closed! Better get on the phone with mom GA!!! Don't forget average temperature, snow fall, and wind speed during the season

4 star WR and tOSU commit Tyjon Lindsey just flipped to Nebraska, so if Calvin does the same that would be two 4 star receivers flipping commitments from OSU to Nebraska. Bet that's a first.

Looks like we might have lost Calvin. Got a text from Bleacher Report that he is re-opening his recruitment.... Yup, Oregonian reporting the same thing. I did read an interview where he said he chose "Oregon State because that is where I felt the most comfortable and because my best friend Arex Flemings in going there", something to that effect. Now all the talk is that it was just his family being able to attend games. Oh well. Still think our WR class is great even without him, but his addition sure would be nice. And it ain't over till its over. Who knows what he'll feel come LOI day. The OregonLive article did say he was just "re-evalutating his options". No direct switch to NU(although I'm sure they think he's in the bag). Calvin opens recruitment

So much confusion and chit chat and backtalk about who what and where... amounting to nothing. The winners will be the people and entities who remain rock solid so they can be a safe landing place on commitment day.

Well... for now is great publicity. But, lest we forget it is not a signing. And, as we've seen the full court press is just beginning for major recruits. Will be great get when he signs. And i bet you are just dying to be Mr Told-You-So if he turncoats on his national TV commitment. From the interview with him and his parents, they appear to be the type of people who keep their word. Welcome Jamire!!! Well, well, well. baseba1111 was spot on. Good pub but not a done deal until signing day. 18 year olds, heavily recruited, with many "constituents" to please. A recipe for indecisiveness. I hope Mr. Calvin ends up at OSU and has a great football experience and education. But if he goes elsewhere, I hope he's happy. This is a good example of why I don't get too excited over recruiting.
