We can bitch about the state of amateur athletics or we can change the game. As Oregon tax payers, why are we paying taxes to support professional athletes (NIL and other payments), their PERS (if payments are disbursed/controlled by the university), their playing environment (tax payer bonds for facilities) and their development (possibly including education)? Are the athletes a “non-profit” entity? Spending all their money does not mean they have non-profit status. If they are not a non-profit, then Phil’s $1B of “donations” to U of O over the years is equal to $100M to the State at present tax rates.Take the deduction away and the playing field does not level due to the present disparity in conference media payouts, but it does stop the gap from widening and creates a better opportunity for a recasting of the playing field as well as how tax dollars are spent in Eugene. There is absolutely zero truth to your first paragraph. Players don’t get PERS and none of your tax dollars is going towards NIL. Yet....

Some notes from a Duck:
1. As a fan I want the CW to continue. 2. Oregon literally spent money buying out existing game contract and renegotiating another contract for non- conference games in 2024 to put the CW in Reser this year. 3. Some background on the demise of the Pac12 has been presented in this thread. The latest info I have read is that Colorado and Big12 were locked in before the GOR meeting (Apple) meeting. The B1G contacted UW when they had confirmation of the Colorado move. UW told Oregon they were leaving and Oregon knew what was coming next. Yes, Oregon had been lobbying for a landing in case UW bolted long before the Colorado trigger. 4. I get the hate. I get the anger. I spent 50 years invested in Pac8/10/12 football and understand the CW rivalry.
I posted in a thread on Oregon 247 site about how LUCKY my favorite team is. It is not about anything I have done. It is about the convergence of people in the Oregon track program decades ago that created this unbelievable facial advantage for Oregon athletics. Serendipity plays a part in life.

When you can literally buy players on the open market, building a program is only about $$$$ now. Uncle Phil may very well buy his national championship. At least the NFL has a salary cap. That's the interesting twist for me. Over the years I've been less interested in the NFL and more interested in college ball. With NIL, all this realignment, and the greed, I find myself suddenly finding more interest in the NFL than college.

I think, all things considered, it would be good for the Beavers to get a Big 10 team (ANY Big 10 team) in Corvallis every other year, if possible. The fact that that team might be the ducks is less relevant now than it has ever been before. Not being in the same conference, we have less on the line (win or lose) when we play them. A win would be sweet, but not necessarily any sweeter than beating any other power 4/5 conference team that we play.
All that being said, what I've learned from a few posters in this thread is, if I have this right, the ducks and the whole UofNike athletic program is fine and upstanding, and no Beaver fan nor any other fan has any reason to claim otherwise. Seemingly, if we call the ducks "evil" then we're just delusional. If some authority like, say, the NCAA, finds that the ducks have done something wrong, then it seems we're supposed to accept that it was misplaced and undeserved. We are seemingly supposed to believe that we have ZERO Moral High Ground compared to the ducks. That the only reason WE didn't negotiate behind the scenes, skip out on our conference, and drive the final nail into the cofin of the Pac is because we simply didn't get the opportunity. That the only reason WE didn't hire a non-degreed booster as AD is because we didn't think of it first. That, if only we'd been thinking straight, WE would have found ways around the state contractor bid laws when building athletic facilities on campus. That our AD and President are just lying, find the silver lining, and/or making excuses, when they say that what they really want is a REGIONAL conference. Seemingly, the ducks are the shining example of how you do things the right way, get what you want, and become a huge success, with no regrets and no questionable behavior of any kind.
At least when Green85 posted he admitted he was a duck. A few posters who claim to be Beaver fans somehow NEVER find that the Beavers made better decisions, upheld a higher standard of conduct, or in any way outshined the ducks when it comes to doing things the right way, on or off the field/diamond/court. You don't have to hate the ducks to be a Beaver fan (I guess), but if you're a Beaver fan wouldn't you at least like or respect the Beavers more than the ducks? Wouldn't you be willing to occasionally see the ducks in an unfavorable light?

They still need to win. Why isn't Oklahoma St a national power with all that energy money from T Boone Pickens? Pickens has donated millions to OSU, but PK has donated over a billion to U of O. Size matters. Further, having the backing of a company like Nike, with all of its innovation and resources, is far greater for a university's athletics department than an oil company. And winning hasn't been much of a problem for the Ducks. They've gone to two national championship games and they've won enough each year to be considered one of the top teams in the country. They've done this while undergoing coaching changes. So money may not directly connect to wins, but it sure does a lot to keep a team afloat. Imagine where the Beavers would be this year if they had the Ducks kind of money in their pockets....Of course, we wouldn't have been left behind with WSU in the first place, but even if we had, I think our position would look a little more like Notre Dame's. We'd still be able to attract strong coaches, great players, and opponents worthy of our status. Money doesn't buy wins but it does put you in a good place to get them.

All this nonsense you are selling yourself to make you feel better is just that, nonsense.

You haven't explained why they should be any school's tipping point, least of all Washington's. Since 2016 they have been one of the worst teams in the conference, being above .500 only the truncated COVID year. Media market? OK, but nothing above the Bay Area, Puget Sound, or 4 Corner schools. They didn't really fit in with the Big12 and I would argue they didn't really fit in with the Pac12. So who would care about what they did? This is just a hindsight rationale for progams that were looking to get out, and for their best landing spots, all along. Lucky? Yes. Convergence of people in the Oregon track program decades ago? I guess, but really it was due to one man, a track coaching genius named Bill Bowerman. Bowerman elevated Oregon's track program to a national level and kept it there. He elevated track and field, broadening its reach with the general public by promoting jogging. He developed his own running shoe. Knight was a mediocre distance runner who hatched a plan to go into business with Bowerman and market the shoe. Bowerman didn't like being in business with Knight and soon dropped out. Notwithstanding Nike's meteoric success, Knight didn't start spending money in any kind of major way, nor did Oregon benefit from the Nike brand, until the Cotton Bowl blowout. Then, Oregon athletics became an obsession and he started kicking in bucket loads of money. It wasn't money alone. Nike marketing expertise gave the program a visual glamour heretofore unseen in college athletics.

They all tend to point to Colorado....which just shows how out of touch they really are.

Green, I have said it before, I will say it again - I may not always agree with your posts, but if all, or even a majority of Oregon fans were like you, the fan base would have a much better reputation. You have always been a class act on here.
To add to what others have said about your post - so, let me get this straight - after all of the shenanigans that Oregon and others have engaged in here to kill a 100+ year old rivalry and conference, at least it it's recently past form, we are supposed to be grateful we have your team in Reser this year? Are you serious right now? Give me a break. They didn't make these changes out of the goodness of their heart, or because they give a damn about us, but to attempt to save face. That is it. They know they screwed the pooch here in Oregon, now they come carrying an olive branch. Too little, too late. With many of us Beaver fans, the disgust for Oregon will not go away anytime soon. Up until the conference blow up, there was "hatred" for the ducks, but it was mostly good-natured. Not any more. This has taken it to a totally new level

That's a weird take. Uo is in their spot now because of pknight's money. Whether the serious money started in 1990 or 1996 is irrelevant. Bowerman was never involved in day to day operations. He was all R & D. He and Knight signed their agreement in 68 or 70. His money he put in helped the young Nike (BRS) in a huge way. I don't know the value of where the Bowerman family stock went, but I think high 9 figures.

Which more and more, isn't just about football. With the NCAA, they want to continue to hold out the mirage that they are fair, just and are effectively managing amateur sports at universities around this country. We all know this is no longer true - they have lost their power and ability to protect college sports. Or, even more likely, they have joined the other side, as it were. They need to drop the pretense, if they plan on continuing where this is headed.

Pretty sure uo and UW we’re trying to get out for quite a while.
