Hmmm, a couple dudes who would be big contributors next season. Not a great sign Did we really expect Jiminez to throw much next year? Exactly my thoughts. TJ surgery shortly before the season this year, if we did see him it likely wasn't until the end of the season next year anyway, and he probably wouldn't have thrown much more than Rasmussen did in 2017 (possibly not even that much as I think Drew had his TJ the Fall before the 2016 season but correct me if I'm wrong). I liked what I saw from him in 2023, but of the pitching losses we could see, this one is mitigable.

Someone had posted a pod cast interview of Aiden Jimenez prior to the season where he essentially bashed on living in Oregon/ Corvallis. And gushed all over SEC ball and southern states. Hated Country music. Loves shoes and rap music. Never felt like he was a fit after hearing that. The way we protect guys, i doubt we would have seen him on the mound next year any way. Good luck, bud. Hates country music, but loves Southern states? OK. I despise country music like crazy, but I was pretty easily able to avoid it even while growing up in semi-rural Oregon and then going to OSU.

And today, everybody has sound blocking headphones and their own personal music on their phone. Even if you're in a house with country music loving dudes, just get a pair of Bose headphones and chill.
But yeah, I don't think he's going to love the SEC like he thinks he will. Plus, which SEC team has the space to rehab a pitcher after TJ surgery? I figure he'll end up at Kansas State...more country music. lol

Drew Rasmussen had his TJ surgery on March 31, 2016, and started playing again on April 28, 2017 (10 pitches). The following weeks, he got up to 30, 60, 75, and 85 pitches before it became clear that something had gone wrong. Too fast and too soon. Aiden Jimenez was hurt back in February. In theory, he could start showing up in games in mid-March. But that was kind of the thought with Joey Mundt last year, and he never showed back up, taking the entire 2023 season off.

Jace Fry came back from his TJ surgery in about a year (surgery after 2012 season, pitched tail end of 2013). Pitched in 2014 but had another TJ surgery shortly after that. Rushing back is the absolute worst thing you can do.

Drew has had multiple surgeries after that as well... Other than the perfect game I think my favorite memory of him was coming in against Fullerton to close out our opening game in the CWS in 2017. Threw all fastballs ALA Ricky Vaughn in Major League and completely overpowered them in the 9th inning for a save.

Jace Fry came back from his TJ surgery in about a year (surgery after 2012 season, pitched tail end of 2013). Pitched in 2014 but had another TJ surgery shortly after that. Rushing back is the absolute worst thing you can do. Fry had his first TJ surgery in June 2012. Fry came back on May 5, 2013. 10 pitches. Two weeks later, he tried again. 10 pitches. The following weekend, he threw 15 pitches on both Friday and Sunday. He did not pitch at all in the Regional, presumably saving Fry for a Game Four, which was not necessary. In the Super Regional opener, Fry threw 40 pitches. Fry then rested for 12 days. Fry was the final Oregon State pitcher to pitch in 2013. After Moore gave up four, Fry came on and retired 10 of 11 in order, only allowing a double in the seventh. On the other side, Kendall Graveman, who is out for the year but still on the Astros' roster, threw a gem, 5.2 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, & 2 Ks. (Graveman is a fun trivia question answer, because he is the last pitcher to log an at bat, striking out looking in Game Five of the 2021 World Series. Graveman retired the final six players in order to send the series back to Houston, where the Braves would win the World Series in six). 4-1 in the sixth. With a runner on first and two out, Graveman was pulled for a southpaw, who got Conforto. Oregon State put two on with one out twice. The first threat was ended on a double-play. After putting two on with one out in the ninth, Mississippi State went to their closer, Jonathan Holder (who was playing ball for the Rangers earlier this year). Holder got the next two to pick up the save and end the game. In 2014, Fry went 11-2 with a 1.80 ERA and threw a no-hitter. Fry was named Pitcher of the Year and was a First Team All-American. Fry was selected #77 overall in the Third Round. Fry passed his physical and was cleared to play. Fry threw seven times in 2014. Fry started 10 games in 2015 before throwing out his arm. Fry had his second TJ surgery on June 18, 2015. Fry missed the rest of the 2015 and 2016 seasons. Fry made his major league debut on September 5, 2017. Despite a very messy and loud breakup with his fiancé in 2017, Fry was great in 2017 and 2018. Fry regressed in 2019. Fry had a hernia in 2021, which sidetracked the season, Fry's last in the majors. Fry played for the Nats, Phillies, and Tigers over the next two years. He was released by the Tigers on June 8, 2023, with left elbow inflammation. All that to say that Fry rushed back early but pitched well for more than two years before throwing out his elbow, while the White Sox were trying to ramp him up to be a full-time starter. Unlike Rasmussen, they really were cautious with Fry, slowly bringing him along, which may have been the difference. Rasmussen was too fast, too soon. The issue with Fry may have been too soon, but it was not too fast.

As it is today, we are overstocked with catchers and Tanner's Portal entry is only the first move on the board. If Weber returns, we also have the two red-shirt freshman, Gustavson and Marnell Jr. We have three 2024 recruits entering this fall, Vandenbrink, Halstead and Serrano. Serrano has played some at 1B so we might see a position change there. With Smith gone and Serrano moving to 1B, you still have 5 catchers in the fall. I suspect we'll see another move or two prior to fall ball. The key component in all of this is Weber. Does he return for his Senior year? Does he hit the Portal? Does he sign a pro contract? FWIW, Wiepert and Scott are coming in '25 and '26. Both are very talented. Hearing that Weber is headed for Medford Rogues to work on adding another position this summer. Nate Esposito is the head coach and Kyle Fromcke an assistant. So as of now he’s not transferring.

Every time I see that there is new post in this thread, I have a small panic attack. Don't panic! Of course the biggest day for new entries was 5/25. The rate of entry is likely slowing down: Portal Entries by day/date (6/8 to 6/16) Sat 6/8.......19 Sun 6/9........4 Mon 6/10...70 Tue 6/11.....27 Wed 6/12...45 Thur 6/13...43 (including Smith & Jimenez) Fri 6/14......45 Sat 6/15.....8 Sun 6/16....10 We'll see how today (Monday) stacks up against last Monday when there was 70 new entries. Total players that have entered the portal: 1,879. Of note, Kentucky has already acquired 8 players, including CSU Bakersfield Fri. Night Starter Ryan Verduno. He started their 1st game in Surprise this year (v. Minnesota) but didn't pitch against the Beavers. A classic case of a good pitcher on a bad team - his BAA in 2024 was .208

Magic formula:
Success in the Portal is directly proportional to the money held by your Collectives.
