I'm willing to bet that NO coach has ever done so much damage to any D1 athletic program as Smith did as he left for supposedly greener pastures. And I have no doubt that Smith knew perfectly well that he was guilty of illegal tampering and just plain bad faith and disloyalty in the way he left and tempted others to follow him. I would like to see Barnes seriously consider a lawsuit against Smith and, by association, MSU. At the very least, Smith was guilty of tampering which resulted in serious financial damage to Oregon State. We could win in court... we have a demonstrable case. Discovery would be revealing...At the very least you can bet MSU would settle out of court for possibly millions. Smith is a scumbag and shouldn't be allowed to get away scott free from the damage he has incurred to OSU. Gary Anderpants would like a word...

I thought I remembered smith hiring a pretty good dc at msu. I could be wrong but I thought it looked like a solid hire but I didn’t know anything about him except from what I read. If smith is able to succeed it will be because of his staff and despite him and lindgren. Yes, they hired Joe Rossi away from Minnesota where he spent the last 5 years as their DC. Rossi has a decent resume, he runs a nominal 3-4 that operates like a 4-3 with a hybrid/stand up DL walking down from one of the OLB players. Runs multiple fronts and a nickel out of the package. A lot of the same things that Bray does, from my POV. You have to wonder about that hire. Minnesota was like 10th-12th in almost every major defensive stat. And he's in the same conference, known commodity.

Must be a slow news week if 4 pages of a guy who isn't a Beaver doesn't get moved to the Rotating Tap board.
We all know why Chiles left; it isn't rocket science. What a stupid piece for the paper to run.

A little off-topic, but............ Who wants to go to the Linfield football game opener this year with me? IT'S DIVISION 3 FOOTBALL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! and, I'm honestly thinking about not renewing my season tickets and picking a different D3 game to go to every week. Linfield, Willamette, Lewis & Clark, etc. A lot of options here in the Wilamette Valley. Screw Smith! Screw Chiles! etc, etc. Bleed dat! So you punish the players for something the previous coach did obviously a fair weather fan. I’m going to renew because I SUPPORT THE COACHES AND PLAYERS especially after want @*cking js did. Enjoy D3 football 🏈 Yo! Sportsfan85 You are obviously new around these parts. I've been a season ticket holder for 25 years. I'm the farthest thing from a fairweather fan. I'm actually loyal to a fault. I bleed orange and black and wrote an article for this site called "The Wiseguy Weekly" when it was called Beaverfootball.com back around 2003 ish. This is when DNorz ran the site and I believe OrangeAttack was the moderator. I'm a donor and alumni class of '92. Anyhows, I think D3 football would be refreshing. My motive is not to punish OSU by any means. I support the coaches and players. I'm just ready for change. D1 football is a new animal. The transfer portal, NIL, coaches salaries, etc. I'm on the fence, but seriously looking forward to supporting some of our smaller D3 schools here in Oregon. Bleed dat!

Anderpants was running from his problems, and created more in Corvallis. He had no previous ties really to OSU. I honestly just feel bad for the guy. He who shall not be named used OSU to further his career, and left when it suited him, which happened to be when we needed him most.....he tried to completely gut the program, but thankfully OSU had the foresight to hire Bray, who was the unspoken ones prized assistant.....the milk maid can eff off

I think Pettibone was unfairly maligned and put in a position he could not succeed, but he did some good things and set the table for things to come. If I had written that on Beaverfootball.com in 2003 I would have been drawn and quartered by the board. Anderpants was nothing but a pothole that the program hit. I don't hold acrimony for him either. In my shop, I have a wall with a whole bunch of broken motorcycle parts on it. Smashed radiators, broken fenders, bent handlebars, bent footpegs. I call it "The Wall of Shame", and overseeing it all is the patron saint of shame, a bobblehead Gary Andersen figure.

I think that Pettibone recruited well and set the groundwork for Riley to build from. The one issue that I have always had with Pettibone, though, is that he became a big Duck fan after his time in Corvallis.

I'm not sure what loyalty or love he is supposed to have for Oregon State anyway. His trip to Corvallis derailed what had up until that point been a promising career, from his perspective. He was a running back at Oklahoma, an assistant at SMU, Oklahoma, Texas A&M and then took Northern Illinois to their best season ever, beat a top 25 opponent for the first time ever, and was a COY award recipient for the mid-major schools. Came to Oregon State taking over a passing offense and returning it to a rushing offense, won another COY award prior to the disastrous 1-10 1995 season that for all practical purposes ended his career, with a last gasp in 96 running an offense that was foisted upon him. He went home to Oklahoma, and runs a non-profit related to the Sooners football program. Never coached again.

He was better than Avezzano and Fertig, but he was just an awful hire. Stupid decision by the AD. Still, he made the program better for Riley to come in and take Oregon State to the next level. And then Erickson was handed the baton and kept the momentum going, almost to the top before things plateaued for a half decade. You humanize the guy, but I will refuse to do that. I can appreciate that things did not work out well for him, but I still dislike him.

He pushed for and helped with fundraising for the original Valley Football Center. It was small, but he got boosters to see we needed facility upgrades and it set the foundation. The other thing that he did is really push recruiting offensive lineman that was especially necessary for his system. But, it also left a good foundation for Riley to build on.

JP was a good recruiter and his time at Oklahoma gave him strong inroads into Texas, and he brought in a bunch of talent on both sides of the ball. Tompkins was an A&M bounceback, TA was one the top rushing QB in the nation coming out of Florida. These were recruits that other schools wanted.

Class of 85 so I guess you are the new guy in these parts. During my years at OSU 9 wins and 2 ties, so don’t tell me about being loyal. I’ve watched plenty of bad football where the Beavers probably would be a 50/50 game against Linfeild during that span. Enjoy the change watching D3 football maybe you can find a good D3 basketball program to follow as well.
