I’m hoping for consecutive ACL tears for the young man. Is that bad? Does that make me a bad person? It would only be bad if you were hoping for ACL tears and his surgery becomes infected and he becomes an amputee. So I think you are okay at this point. I, for one, am going to take the high road and hope he stays healthy his entire career … and completely turns into a dumpster fire in every game he plays.

The team meeting did happen before the civil war game. Although 1/3 of the team was not present as they had already left for Thanksgiving with family. He call an emergency meet in the players room. He told the players that were present that he was heart broken to break his commitment to them. But he need to do what was right for him and someday he hoped they would understand. He cried. He made some comments that he believe in the teams future and they would be fine. He told them he felt he need to tell them before the game as there was not going to be time on gameday, they needed to be focused on gameday and there was a flight come too early Saturday for him to have a meeting then & he was take almost the entire staff with him.
I have no problem with him making a business decision. He could have told MSU send the plane later Saturday or Sunday. So he could have told the team Saturday morning. He should have finished his job. The team knew something was up as recruiting had all but stopped. A few players were questioning the lack of recruiting 2-3 weeks before the end of the season. Several upper classman had already figured it out the week before Washington or were at least openly questioning it. This is why Chiles was asking him weeks before Oregon.
Nothing we talk about it at this point will change anything. We will find our path looking forward together not look back. We have great coaches that are inspired, young, energetic, want to be here and bring lots of optimism to the situation.
We are underdogs, I personally look forward to the coaches and team proving people wrong and proving Beaver fans right.
Go Beavs.

As I stated early on in this process, not only did the team know for sure before the Civil War, but they pretty much knew weeks before that. The coaches definitely knew, and it was why Bray told his friend and alum after the game that he was getting on the plane first thing in the morning to Lansing. Thankfully, over the course of the next few hours he was talked out of that. JS wanted Bray more than any other coach (including OL and TE coach)..so savor a small slice of pleasure out of that.
With the expected mass exodus of coaches, the original idea was to leave behind a few GA's to do the recruiting of current players to MSU. So there was certainly tampering, but I have no idea if it meets the legal threshold for tampering.
Smith's exit was shameful to fans, players, his fellow coaches and to the athletic department. He deserves no benefit of the doubt in my opinion. We salvaged Bray and I think that will turn out to be pivotal. There wasn't much he could do to prevent a lot of these guys from bailing as the uncertainty of 'relegation' was a real problem. Now that things have settled down and we seemed to have done a worthy job of restocking, I would say we are in a position to field as good or better a team as we had last year. That may be wildly optimistic, but I think we have a few more pieces yet to arrive.

What are the penalties for tampering? Does that have to come from the ncaa? I'd love to see a financial penalty and a year-long suspension.

I'm willing to bet that NO coach has ever done so much damage to any D1 athletic program as Smith did as he left for supposedly greener pastures. And I have no doubt that Smith knew perfectly well that he was guilty of illegal tampering and just plain bad faith and disloyalty in the way he left and tempted others to follow him.
I would like to see Barnes seriously consider a lawsuit against Smith and, by association, MSU. At the very least, Smith was guilty of tampering which resulted in serious financial damage to Oregon State. We could win in court... we have a demonstrable case. Discovery would be revealing...At the very least you can bet MSU would settle out of court for possibly millions.
Smith is a scumbag and shouldn't be allowed to get away scott free from the damage he has incurred to OSU.

I'd love to see Smith's nose get bloodied over this, somehow, but I think anything we did would create problems for OSU. I doubt a lawsuit would fly. Financial damages caused by his departure are supposed to be covered by his buyout. Tampering, even if proven, I don't believe would change that. Suing a coach would make it harder to hire people down the road, at least potentially. And do we want to have players testifying under oath at depositions and in court?
An NCAA complaint would likely go nowhere.

I think that Smith is going to struggle without a good defensive coordinator, but more importantly Bray is the Player's Coach of all the Player's Coaches. Pete Carroll type enthusiasm - a different energy, maybe.

A little off-topic, but............
Who wants to go to the Linfield football game opener this year with me? IT'S DIVISION 3 FOOTBALL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
and, I'm honestly thinking about not renewing my season tickets and picking a different D3 game to go to every week. Linfield, Willamette, Lewis & Clark, etc. A lot of options here in the Wilamette Valley.
Screw Smith! Screw Chiles! etc, etc. Bleed dat!

There was a team meeting at 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 25. He flew to East Lansing on Sunday, Nov. 26. Here's video of his arrival:

What about a debilitating case of the clap that resulted in him(and Smith) having to use a colostomy bag for a year or so? Is that wrong to hope for?

I could be wrong but I thought it looked like a solid hire but I didn’t know anything about him except from what I read. If smith is able to succeed it will be because of his staff and despite him and lindgren.

Rossi has a decent resume, he runs a nominal 3-4 that operates like a 4-3 with a hybrid/stand up DL walking down from one of the OLB players. Runs multiple fronts and a nickel out of the package. A lot of the same things that Bray does, from my POV.
