My point is that Oregon State does not have the ability to just plug in another guy at the level that schools like Ohio State can. Not only is the drop-off talent wise not as significant but they have a much better ability to just grab a player off the portal to fill a position. Maybe I misunderstood your post? Maybe you’re a new Beaver fan? We’ve never had the talent and we’re in the biggest crisis situation that we’ve ever been in with no conference? Did you think everything was going to go perfectly? "The Pacific Coast Conference (PCC) was a college athletic conference in the United States which existed from 1915 to 1959. Though the Pac-12 Conference claims the PCC's history as part of its own, with eight of the ten PCC members (including all four original PCC charter members) now in the Pac-12, the older league had a completely different charter and was disbanded in 1959 due to a major crisis and scandal (wikipedia)"

The reality is that we will probably be a little down the next two years, but luckily playing a little down schedule at that same time. Still scheduling P5 teams is great. I can still see us in that 8-4 range give or take a game. 3,000 players went into the portal this week... you read that right, 3,000. We will get some decent ones back. Our new coaching staff WILL get some decent guys in, but it will certainly look different than this year. This is going to happen EVERY year now. Gone are the days of rooting for the same 22 guys for 4-5 years. many teams are worse off than us in terms of the portal. There are 3,000 guys that can't all go to the B10 or SEC. They all have to find homes. We are going to be okay. 3000? Does that include both FCS AND FBS? DII? If it's only FBS, that'd be an average of over 20 per school, so I gotta assume it includes at least FCS to bring it to about 10 per school.

Much different environment. There wasn't the amount of $$$ involved back then.

Much different environment. There wasn't the amount of $$$ involved back then. It indeed was a much different environment. Schools in the conference then were at different places regarding the importance of Athletics to their institutions, and how much Athletics should be supported, and where the money should come from. Pretty much everyone is "all in" now.
Sure the $$$ were different, both in actual and indexed terms, but money was still money.
My main point was -- there is truly nothing new under the sun, that it is not "The biggest crises we have ever been in"

I know some here will make fun of me and call me a doomsdayer, but losing Mascaranas is a BIG deal. Akili also, but man, Mascaranas is a one man gang.

A lot on here are strangely downplaying all this… and yeah maybe it’s a healthy defense mechanism … but there’s no doubt this growing list of departures is as bad as the worst case scenario I feared. Maybe time for me to go be a fan of small college football.

Some just realize it's the way of college ball now... whether your coach leaves or stays. Teams lose key players all the time. No, absolutely none, evidence any of these portal guys would have stayed... even with Smith. Did Omar stay? Who was better? Did our defense still do OK? Mascaranas is not all everything. He made a ton of tackles. Terrible coverage guy with a lack of wheels in space. Come back and tell us what high level program he goes to and how much he excels. PS- folks on here greatly exaggerate the NIL $ these kids get. Players have recently exposed how false #s being spouted are for the majority of players on teams... even like A&M. And, bottom line, all that matters, OSU will play football in '24. Bitch about it or support it. Your choice.

Certain posters, not you, have sugar coated the losses and mocked folks that worry about them. So be it. It’s a free country. Teams like Ohio St have a much less difficult time filling departing spots, so I don’t care how many players they have leave. But that’s just me.

The most tackles has zero to do with foot speed, coverage skills, or filling spots like Omar's & his. We're not tOSU in initial recruiting or portal pickups. But, this OSU will also have no problem filling the departing spots. And, realistically it's easier for our OSU to rebuild at our talent level than tOSU. There are simply more 2-3* players than 4*. And, that's what we're replacing no matter how many tackles. Is really a matter of supporting OSU, not blaming or spouting negativity (like several) about factors or of the program's/ coach's fault.

Easton is leaving big shoes to fill... that is for sure. Real good thing his back up, Melvin Jordan played in every game this season and carved out a respectable 17 tackles in fill in duty throughout the year. That is what we have back ups that is why we develop them all year. Going to be real nice for Jordan to play a whole game to himself in a couple weeks.

It seems that just about every ILB has led or been close to the lead in tackles since the staff came in. A lot of it is scheme. There are young guys like Jordan, and Chisom just off the top of my head. These guys are still going to be better than most of the competition. Julian if healthy, Kane, and Thomas will all be good as replacements as well. The bigger issue is combining these losses with all of the seniors that are leaving this year which makes losing any starter sting more. They will definitely be bringing in plenty of guys to replace or add depth.
They’re supposed to host quite a few transfers on visits this weekend so hopefully will start adding some guys and quiet some of the panic around the program.
