I agree. If the Big took most of the Pac and kept us in a Western Division, then I think it would have worked. But I don’t think OSU’s degrees are less valuable than Illinois’ or Mich State. I’m sure these schools have their strengths just like us. sorry, I was not clear. My opinion of most of the B1G west programs was through a football lens. Academically, those are fine schools. I agree. Earlier in the thread academics was brought up. Wilky said (I think) that OSU and WSU are the worst in the Pac, academically speaking. I personally don’t believe that at all. Football speaking, most schools have their ups and downs. Right now we are pretty damn good and improving. I think we match up well against most teams out there.

We do NOT want to be in the B1G. Largely for 1) the travel reasons many on here criticized UW and hole for taking on and 2) the B1G west has garbage programs outside of the four new schools and Wisconsin. I agree. If the Big took most of the Pac and kept us in a Western Division, then I think it would have worked. But I don’t think OSU’s degrees are less valuable than Illinois’ or Mich State. I’m sure these schools have their strengths just like us. I don't have more to add on academics. Regarding travel, if WSU and OSU are in the B10, that's half the P12. Most of the away games would be against those other five schools. Travel problem mostly solved. And if that were to happen, the Arizona's and Utah are close behind. I'm guessing Cal and Stanford are stuck now in the horrible ACC gor restrictions.

Just wondering has the B12 fat lady sang? Still warming up? Taking a break? Has laryngitis? Walked off the stage? Quit?

The B10, as stated by many already, is a huge mistake for Oregon and UW, and without the large donor base even worse for OSU/WSU.

For football, it probably makes sense to have all 32 (semi sarcasm) teams in one group. But for every other sport they should limit cross country travel

Everything comes down to ESPN and Fox. Speaking of wishes, my wish is for a B10 invite. It's a better conference and it mostly solves the regional questions. There would be four PNW schools and two more from southern California. As a wild guess, Utah and the Arizonas along with the bay area schools would be close behind. Is it worth $35M or so per school for ESPN and Fox to add WSU and OSU? Maybe . . . . Winning helps our chances I think your right on it coming down to ESPN/Fox. A couple additional factors are what would the networks pay for a Pac-2/MWC merger or what would that competition cost them if the Pac-2/MWC. Also, with OSU/WSU currently blocking dissolution of the Pac-12 assets, could giving that fight up buy our way into the Big-12? The multi-million dollar questions. The current MWC media deal is... $4 million per team per year. $270 million. total, not per year, over 6 years. it expires in 2026. OSU and WSU can elevate that some, but alone are never going to be enough to get a conference up to even $20 million. Maybe a new Pac-12 with OSU/WSU and the rest of MWC could get up to $10 or $12 million, but that just isn't enough. The question of OSU/WSU holding Pac-12 assets to help carry them through becomes muddy if it is the Pac-12 that gets merged into... what rights would new members have to those assets? It is a win for all the MWC teams, but it is still a loss for OSU. I hate to say it, if the Big 12 offers us a spot we HAVE to take it. especially if it is a semi equal share spot. It makes me feel icky, but it is what we will be forced to do, and quiet frankly MUST do.

UO is the worst by far academically in terms of research funding. Our research funding is a great talking point - over 450 megadollars! - but it's a bit misleading to connect research funding to academic excellence. I'm not saying there is not a connection, but it's not a direct, 1:1 connection. While I'm on your side, I must respectfully suggest that you're overstating and oversimplifying just a tad. Research funding? In the last five years, the other school received a billion bucks in research funding, and that's from only one source. Spin that into academics, if you will. Academics define academic standing. Research projects determine research revenue, and working on big-ticket items (such as being the conduit through which funding for a few research-class vessels pads your bottom line) inflates that standing as well. Just to be clear: in terms of real research funding going to actual research projects instead of buildings and endowed chairs (a campus south of here) or boats (our own dirty secret), if you wish to compare the two schools, yes, we do come out ahead. And because of the breadth and depth of of our research enterprise, heck, just with with the engineering program alone, the undergraduate research opportunities occur more, and in more variety of areas, than south of here, which is the academic connection - as, too, is the graduate programs that rely far more on research undergirding the degree activity. I mean - I agree with you, but it's too complicated to let it sit just so...

OSU touts that they bring in more research funding than all the other schools in the OUS combined.

The point is that you can spin revenue that isn't directed to specific research projects (see the place upstream from here) as "research funding" - let alone connect "research funding" to academic outcomes (see the place upstream from here).
