I think we can all agree that no matter where we land, keeping Smith is priority one. Obviously, he is our guy, and could stay even if we are essentially in the MW......but if we have sustained success one of the big boys will likely come knockin with big cash.....but maybe if we still have a path to the CFB he will stick around?? I mean we know he likes Corvallis.....good place to raise kids.

There is no way a school like OSU can fend off big $ schools if they come calling and the coach wants to leave. It's always going to be the downside of being a successful program.

Sure, but all else being equal, I think being in a P5 Pac 12 vs MW, is a better setup to keep Smith in place.

Well, if I'm the big $ school looking... successful Pac12 guy is preferred over successful MWC guy. Arrogance breeds Arrogance in those leagues! Although in most of those cases the big $ schools looking are typically the ones struggling at mid to bottom of their conference. So maybe successful MWC guy would rather stay, not only successful, but secure. But, who knows with some coaches. Egos can get in the way.

Smith is under contract for several more years, so Oregon State is contractually bound to pay him the agreed upon amounts over that time. He'll be earning the same, whether we're in a P4 conference or not. If he opts to leave for money elsewhere, he does, but it won't be because we had to cut his pay or something like that.
I don't know Jonathan, so the rest of this is pure speculation. But this has to be his dream job, what he was hoping might someday happen. I just don't see him bailing when his alma mater is facing tough times. He would certainly be aware that his departure would exacerbate the situation and start a nosedive toward the bottom.
There is another factor named Mrs. Smith. Don't know her either, but they've got young daughters and they've been raising them here in Corvallis for a few years. I've got to guess that she's been pretty happy with her kids growing up in a nice, small college town, and might not be too keen on moving elsewhere.
If you accused me of looking at it though rose colored glasses, I'd be hard pressed to argue with you. But that's my take on it; I'd be really, really disappointed to be proven wrong.

You mean orange colored glasses I think... I do get the feeling that Smith is more Pat Casey, and less Dennis Erickson if you know what I mean. I know uncle Phil chipped in to keep Case around, for which I'm forever grateful ( small amount of puke in my mouth).....maybe if we get to that place where we need to pony up some wealthy donors will step up

During the pandemic those contracts and bonuses were affected due to these types of clauses. From insider knowledge in some cases it was presented as, "... agreed to forgo...", but it was a cut. Even school districts have such clauses that state job or contractual salaries are dependent on fund availability. Although in those cases they cut a job not salaries of multiple employees. On another topic, sort of related, the quote about OSU athletic programs and assuring they have a conference to play in. It was stated "17" programs. Last I saw OSU offered (16). Mistake or mistaken?

I believe that it comes down to whether you count indoor and outdoor women's track & field as separate sports. 16, if you count them together. 17, if you count them separately.
