Do you mean that Smith is responsible for our recruiting successes and not that we now have a winning program? How would you show that? I think they intertwined. But I think DJU wouldn’t come to the Beavs if we had a losing season or even a .500 season. That said, it’s clear that Smith recruits and develops good players. And he can make winners out of weaker athletes. So regardless, if we have Smith, we will field a competitive, never-give-up team. We did not have a winning team until 2 years ago. DJU may have come here after last year's success... but we won 10 games last year largely with his recruits from "bad" times. DJU aslo said he was attracted to the offense. Very little of that changes after this season. As long as Jonathan, and hopefully his assistant hires, sticks around and he's invested in being here, I don't think there will be a huge drop-off. DJU was attracted to the offense, which he saw used successfully and talked about in sports news against Pac12 opponents. Even if the offense remains the same, the exposure isn't the same. DJU doesn't look at a Boise State, and we all know that.

I think we have different ideas of just fine. We have made it to this unique spot in our history where we enter a season ranked, get a highly touted transfer QB, and have fans dreaming of a play for the national championship. The buzz around the program is real and it is exciting. We’re seeing better recruits and less fall off between first and second string. Another ten plus win season and we’ll be in good shape to bring in more and more top players. Moving to the MWC, I think, means that we will have traditional Beaver types of players. They’ll be “just fine” and some will probably work hard and be stars, but I doubt that we’d ever reach our former brothers (USC, UW…) in terms of recruits and/or wins. But we’ll be fine. Sure. Just not a national force. A couple of 10 win seasons and you think OSU is suddenly going to jump into the top 20 recruiting classes? Really? OSU in a P5 conference is never going to be consistently a national force. Sorry to break it to you... 2000 then ?? OSU will never have the budget, NIL funds, or national brand to be a consistent national force. You can argue all you want but OSU was on a better track than one 10 win season previously and solidly in P5 conference. Didn't happen. And, I'll argue this isn't some unique point in program history. OSU football has had several "spurts" of national relevance. Just never a consistent national power. MWC may be beneath what you think OSU deserves. But, P5 or not OSU is not another 10 win season from being a national force. On the field or the recruiting trail. Next thing we're going to hear is that anything less than 10 wins was caused by the conference breakup. That the coaches and players just couldn't overcome it. A couple of 10 win seasons? Only 1 in the current regime. Yet suddenly we should be a top 10 recruiting program? We’ve made great progress, but we’re not landing 5 stars all of a sudden.

589/20% of the NFL is G5 or lower level players. Any kid thinking a conference is the path to the NFL isn't someone that fits OSU's culture anyway. Plus, the one positive of the portal is players like DJU "grow up" and find that brand doesn't always equal fit. OSU will recruit just fine. I think we have different ideas of just fine. We have made it to this unique spot in our history where we enter a season ranked, get a highly touted transfer QB, and have fans dreaming of a play for the national championship. First off, I made no such claim (about being in the top 20 recruiting next year). Ffs, do you always have to draw your opponent’s argument out to some absurd point in order to make your point? You frequently do this. Second, if you haven’t noticed a culture change around OSU football sine Smith took over then you are missing out. Maybe Erickson had the same; I don’t know. I wasn’t around. But it was never a hallmark of a Riley program. Riley’s teams were satisfied with being “just fine.” Smith’s aren’t. If you hear any excuse giving, it won’t be from Smith or the team but from fans who are stupid. It’s a tough league this year and more than a couple teams want to pound us back down.

But when has the team even been hinted at for winning the conference? And you can’t deny that there is more positive press about the team than there has been in ages. Hell, we’re starting the year ranked. We’re on the radar.

I really don't keep track by exact year, but weren't there two(?) years after that we played a CW for the right to go to the Rose Bowl?

I’m pretty content with a merger of some kind with the MWC or whatever happens. But, we’ve got the opportunity to be a pretty good team this year, and with everything going on with the league, it’s fun to imagine what could be. Might as well go out with a bang.

If you hear any excuse giving, it won’t be from Smith or the team but from fans who are stupid. It’s a tough league this year and more than a couple teams want to pound us back down. Lol... ffs do you read? Where is anything about next year? You mentioned a differing definition of "fine". And ended with OSU being fine, "Just not a national force." I presented that we're/OSU is not ever going to be a national force. Example given that you need to be a regular in top tier recruiting classes to be said national force. As you also stated, "I doubt that we’d ever reach our former brothers (USC, UW…) in terms of recruits and/or wins." Guess what it's not the conference affiliation that keeps OSU from that level. So, so my points were direct rebuttals to what you said. Have no idea where "culture" comes into this or being in the MWC? What, the culture will change going to the MWC? And, what does MR's teams have anything at all to do with this?? But, since you started it... I'm not sure your definition or observations of said culture. But, MR's teams had a great culture and team atmosphere. JS's teams seem to also. But, comparing completely different staffs and rosters is pretty tough. Culture and its development is pretty unique to each team. And, truly how do you know that MR's teams "were satisfied with being just fine"? If you weren't around for DE, you weren't around for MR version 1 either!? At any rate the culture comment is crazy made up opinion, not a fact let alone a "hallmark"!
