Trying to get some clarity on the MLB Amateur Draft in Seattle on July 9-11 and the impact it could have on the OSU roster in 2024. Several scenarios are possible with draft eligible players from the ’23 roster and incoming recruits in the 2023 class enrolling this fall.
DRAFT ELIGIBLE PLAYERS WITH REMAINING COLLEGE ELIGIBILITY:
Mikey Kane, Garrett Forrester, Micah McDowell, Brady Kasper, Ryan Brown, Kyle Dernedde, Ian Lawson, Jaren Hunter, and Aaron Lattery.
MLB PRE-DRAFT COMBINE:
MLB has issued 323 invitations (college and prep) to their 2023 pre-draft combine in Phoenix this month. That takes in roughly ten rounds of the twenty round draft. Garrett Forrester is the only Beaver roster player to receive an invite.
However, Oregon State’s ’23 recruiting class received four invitations, where they will be tested, measured, drilled, interviewed and participate in games played over the three day showcase. The Beaver recruits are CIF Trent Caraway, LHP Paul Wilson, RHP James DeCremer, and RHP Eric Segura.
PROGNOSIS:
FWIW, From what I have seen, Forrester is projected to be selected in the 4th or 5th round. With the option of returning to OSU for a fourth year, “signability” could be an issue. Will he be offered slot money? above or below slot? Or is he just ready to move on to pro ball and money isn’t much of an issue?
I haven’t seen any earlier round projections on the remaining roster group but barring any surprise, we could see some selection activity in the 8th through 14th round range. Another consideration is always free agency signings. Off hand, I would expect to see the majority of those players mentioned above return for a final year.
My gut feel says Forrester is a Pro and we never see Caraway. Landing Turley was incredible, I’m not sure we can duplicate that with Trent Caraway. I sense we are in good shape with most of the other veterans and recruits mentioned.
