Dernedde was money at Stanford and Ft Worth regional in 21. Don't give up on him.

Look at today’s game. Dernedde’s at bats were basically the same as Forrester. A couple strikeouts and a couple walks. The past couple of games have been the same for Forrester. Your post sort of proves my point. Dernedde can’t buy a break, but Forrester is all golden in fans’ eyes. I get it... your not a Forrester fan. But comparing his hitting to Dernedde... I don't follow. Yes, I wish Garret would get more aggressive in at bats with runners on, but this is year 3 and the kid hasn't changed. He knows the zone, and he isn't going to swing at something outside of the zone. His numbers are better than Kyle, no and ifs or buts... more power, better average... and more walks. That equals, better hitter. Just because the fans like Forrester... it doesn't validate he and Dernedde are the same hitter. Back to the big picture... I agree it isn't just a better hitting SS that we need to fix this situation. They all need to hit better. My personal take on it is Mason needs to be in every lineup and we need to get Kasper more AB, preferably as a DH. I thought the move to PH for Kyle in the last AB vs Cal on Sunday was telling. Mitch was aware we needed more in that situation. I don't think he is ever PH for Forrester in a similar situation. So you don’t get it. I like Donkey. But no one talks about how ineffective he has been recently and no one blames him for losses like they do Dernedde. I think Forrester has a great eye and has a lot of unrealized potential to hit the ball and move runners . Batting 3, 4, or 5, that’s exactly what he should do. I put the burden of runs on him, not Dernedde. Taking walks is fine, but with two men on and down by a run, taking a walk is just passing the buck to a less experienced player. Dernedde bats dead last. We know he isn’t much of a hitter, but you all expect him to be. He is a fine defender in a very difficult position. Whoever bats in the 8th and 9th position must be ready to give up an at bat to a pinch hitter at the end of the game. There’s nothing “telling” about that. Expecting #9 to be a slugger is ridiculous. Thinking the #4 hitter is great when he walks when we need hits is insane.

.318 slugging this year. .271 slugging last year. Derne had eight extra-base hits all of 2022, and is already at six. His strikeouts are up, though, and he is not getting on at the same clip that he was last year. I really like starters that can play great defense. If you need a big hit, you sub him out in the last three innings. Having been on the frustration end I get that errors vs having great defensive players is optimal. But, at the D1 level, at the upper tier programs, players are highly skilled and many of their struggles are mental. The lack of confidence is a hitter's worst mental lapse, while defenders have the occasional loss of focus issue. Just a millisecond of "daydreaming" and it's uncanny how the ball usually finds that guy! A simplistic coaches' adage says, "If you shake a tree and 100 players fall out... 99 with gloves and 1 with a bat... take the one with the bat"! There are key/huge errors, just like there are huge/key hits... but, overall you want your lineup to be solid offensively 1-9... How many teams are really “solid offensively 1-9”? I mean, duh, that’s a no-brainer. But we deal with reality.

I hear what you are saying, but it always seemed like Casey has gone with more of a guy with a big glove and trust that he can generate just enough offense with nine of those guys. Fehm is a great example, because he was such a good fielder from the mound, perhaps the best fielding pitcher ever at Oregon State. I think of Chris Kunda in 2006 and Lonnie Lechelt in 2007 or even Zak Taylor in 2018. You trust those guys to make plays and make the pitchers look great. And if you get any offense out of them whatsoever, that's a bonus! And then it seemed like Casey moved away from that defense-first mindset in 2008 before coming back to it by 2011. Bailes also seemed like he immediately moved away from a defense-first mindset in 2019, as well. And Canham brought Oregon State right back by 2021 with the best defense in Beaver history.

It is not Forrester's fault that he gets a bunch of junk to hit, just like it was not Rutschman's fault in 2019. You are looking for your pitch. If you don't get that pitch, you let it pass you by, if it is out of the zone. If it is in the zone, you foul it off.

Big Country will earn his spot in the lineup......he has elite plate discipline and a really good swing. Dernedde is a solid defender, and #9 hitter....no more, no less

I don’t have a problem with any of our players; I have a problem with fans who dump on them and think they know who should be playing. I mistakenly tried to draw light to Forrester’s weak output as of late in order to show that even our golden players are struggling so pulling Dernedde won’t fix that. But that seemed to difficult for some to grasp. Of course, I know what it means to take a walk. But mentioning Rutschman next to Forrester is a bit insane. Many of Rutschman’s walks were intentional. Rutschman could hit everything. Forrester has a great eye and he is patient, but he will watch some beautiful pitches that Adley would’ve crushed.

Then go thru your proposed lineup spots for Garrett. Funny how fans pointing out one player's deficiencies bothers you so much that you defend him by then listing another player's similar ones?! By the way, "solid" doesn't mean 9 guys hitting .300+. But, that's "duh"! The TEAM is struggling... average guys aren't hitting for average, the drive 'em home guys aren't, the move 'em over guys don't. Underachieving teams and individuals get analyzed by fans, that's reality.
