He had limited at bats last year. He’s not the answer. 59. That's about the same as Dernedde this year. 59 at bats is the equivalent of around 18-20 games. That’s not showing you anything. Dernedde is not good at the plate, but he isn’t far the best SS that we have

Maybe his off season changes are about to kick in? 18-20 games is 1/3rd of a season. It's enough to scout players and have teams adjust against them. It's not showing full potential but saying Trosky is s%#t at the plate is just wrong.

Does Trosky have the Arm to be an exceptional SS?

Does Trosky have the Arm to be an exceptional SS? Well right now he's injured and out for the season. Last year I don't recall arm strength being an issue. He had some fielding issues. We don't exactly need exceptional. A guy who bats over 250 and has a comparable error rate to Dern would be nice

The guy on the bench is always better than the guy in the field. Fan board maxim Especially true if the guy 'on the bench' is out for the season with an injury. Clues re:Trosky are pretty thin. His 2022 OSU Roster bio only reports High School Freshman and Sophomore info (Fr .333 BA, Soph .375 BA). He did reasonably well at the plate his Freshman D-1 season with Beavs in 2022 with a .691 OPS in 70 plate appearances. Summer 2022, not so much - though his attitude/energy was of-the-charts positive. WCL - he had 109 plate appearances, with a .499 * OPS. At shortstop last summer he fielded a tepid .851 (on Bend's terrible infield that only the likes of Cadyn Grenier could tame). He did better at 2nd base. I can't recall if his primary problem at SS was fielding the ball, or throwing it. * his summer 2022 OPS essentially equals Dernedde's summer 2021 WCL performance (.507 OPS).

I think Dernedde stays in the lineup for some continuity up the middle. We have been shaky at times on defense.....if bats go quiet, you better be solid on D.

It just seems we can find someone better than Dernedde at SS. Too for me,it's not just about a low average. It's about making quality outs when you need to. Moving a runner over to put them in scoring position...hitting a sac fly or a grounder to the right side with a runner on third with less than two outs. Safety squeezing in a runner from third. Those are the kind of things he needs to be able to do. Make a productive out. Small ball... You are saying: Replace Dernedde and we have a real team. I am saying: If the players who should be hitting were hitting, then Dernedde wouldn’t be a problem.I’m saying his glove is good and he brings a sense of peace and order to the infield. I think we are a better team with Dernedde in the field. You are saying: Kane can do it too. I’m saying: The infield is veterans, except at 3b. They have played well together and know each other. We saw Kane fumble a bit at short early when he had his shot. An easy double play ball mishandled because the communication was not strong between him and Bazz. The solution is that we need our hitters to hit. And you and the others need to take it up with Canham if you really think Dernedde is not contributing. And then Mitch will probably remind you that it’s a freaking team sport. You don’t single out one player when many are at fault. I kñow what you're saying...I just disagree with it. No we wouldn't be o.k. with a .172 hitter in the lineup who is a competent PAC-12 SS...at best. Of course we need all of our hitters to step up who aren't hitting. BTW...Krieg isn't playing because he Is hurt. Ask Mitch about that if you want. Dernedde hit .215 last year and was hitting .172 this year. His bad hitting isn't an abberation.

Listening to Tinkle, Smith, and Canham, I have come to realize that there is a lot of emphasis placed on how well the players click together. They all talk about how much time the members of the team spend together outside of practice. Apparently, that coming together shows on the field. This is just one simple example of why you don't have enough information to question the coach's decision to start a player. You cannot know how the other players feel about Dernedde. He could be an integral part that holds the team together. We don't know. Coach puts together a team. What we see (the game) is only a fraction of what the team is. If you want a team made of OBP and OPS and so on, go back to fantasy baseball. Here, it's real people and Dernedde is part of the team.

His strikeouts are up, though, and he is not getting on at the same clip that he was last year. I really like starters that can play great defense. If you need a big hit, you sub him out in the last three innings.

I played lots of sports in my youth till age 18,and know you have to prove it in practice. I get that. That being said, production when it matters in games is the final grade. I hate analytics and that garbage. It has its place,I'm sure, but sometimes a hunch is just as important. Ask Pat Casey. I don't do fantasy anything. I just watch the games and see the results. They aren't good for Dernedde, and from a previous post,I never said he was the only issue on this rebuilding team. Him getting better at hitting is only one facet of the 2023 osu beaver baseball that will improve our chances of winning.

I don’t think that proving it in practice is what the coaches mean when they talk about guys hanging out together, playing video games together, and liking each other. Seems to me the basketball team was filled was a good example of this last year. It isn’t high school anymore. Every player is skilled.

I'm not sure which team you guys are watching but Kane might be the best of the first year players, as a JC transfer Sophomore. You can bang on Dernedde and I won't try to defend his play... but Forrester, Bazanna, and Kane are your most consistent and productive hitters right now. You can through in Mason in the last few weeks as well. Our struggle is SS and the OF for production. Frankly Tanner is not meeting his potential either... but don't bang on the infielders they are the offense right now for this team with McDowell, Cedillo, and Turley struggling at the plate. I'm a huge fan of the freshman and they do need reps. They got some today. Look at today’s game. Dernedde’s at bats were basically the same as Forrester. A couple strikeouts and a couple walks. The past couple of games have been the same for Forrester. Your post sort of proves my point. Dernedde can’t buy a break, but Forrester is all golden in fans’ eyes. I get it... your not a Forrester fan. But comparing his hitting to Dernedde... I don't follow. Yes, I wish Garret would get more aggressive in at bats with runners on, but this is year 3 and the kid hasn't changed. He knows the zone, and he isn't going to swing at something outside of the zone. His numbers are better than Kyle, no and ifs or buts... more power, better average... and more walks. That equals, better hitter. Just because the fans like Forrester... it doesn't validate he and Dernedde are the same hitter. Back to the big picture... I agree it isn't just a better hitting SS that we need to fix this situation. They all need to hit better. My personal take on it is Mason needs to be in every lineup and we need to get Kasper more AB, preferably as a DH. I thought the move to PH for Kyle in the last AB vs Cal on Sunday was telling. Mitch was aware we needed more in that situation. I don't think he is ever PH for Forrester in a similar situation.

Having been on the frustration end I get that errors vs having great defensive players is optimal. But, at the D1 level, at the upper tier programs, players are highly skilled and many of their struggles are mental. The lack of confidence is a hitter's worst mental lapse, while defenders have the occasional loss of focus issue. Just a millisecond of "daydreaming" and it's uncanny how the ball usually finds that guy! A simplistic coaches' adage says, "If you shake a tree and 100 players fall out... 99 with gloves and 1 with a bat... take the one with the bat"! There are key/huge errors, just like there are huge/key hits... but, overall you want your lineup to be solid offensively 1-9...
