So in the ASU game thread I posted that I thought the loss could be a tipping point for some of the players. I hope not. But I have become very concerned about Rueck's ability to hang on to some very important pieces of the roster. For me, it comes down to this. I really liked watching Beers and Gardiner this season and I am convinced that Blacklock can be an impact player as well and that Hansford can be a major 3-point threat. If some or most of these players leave (in addition to some or most of the others), then Rueck will be rebuilding the team. Again. But don't expect another No. 3 recruiting class to rescue him. No, it will be a patchwork squad made up of some holdovers and transfers that most likely were unable to pique the interest of strong programs. Good luck getting out of the bottom half of the Pac-12. I said it would take a complete meltdown to get to that point. I'm not sure it's a complete meltdown. The players are still out there competing. They obviously haven't given up. But do they still have faith in Rueck?

I think there could be some real good players in the portal, Getting them here is the challenge because everyone will be in shopping mode to get one or two players that will fill their weaknesses. Not making the big dance will put things at a disadvantage.

Some folks like to predict the worst case scenarios because: 1. There's really no downside. If the worst happens you look like a genius (which is important, I guess). 2. If it doesn't, nobody cares or remembers.

This program under Scott wasn't built on 4 and 5 star players from the get go. Of course we got Syd and Jamie, but it was built on 3* players or players osu developed. Hunter,Hansen,Brown,Ruth,Corosdale,Guliich, and others. 4 and 5 stars don't always make a cohesive unit. It's about developing players who want to be at osu. I'm fine with getting Shuler and Hunter, players from in state who have solid potential. Goforth,Kampschroeder,Brown,Jones and other national recruits don't guarantee success or even close. Osu needs the right kids...not just kids with tons of offers.

I don't want it to happen, but I'm not going to pretend that everything is going great with Rueck and the program either. I'll be very happy if the freshman class and most others decide to stay.

Starting lineup of: 1. Transfer PG 2. Talia 3. Adlee 4. Timea 5. Raegan
Would be very solid. I’ve been so impressed with Adlee’s play as of late and if she continues to shoot the ball this well, she could make a Tudor-esque jump next season. Pair that with a healthy Talia and an additional year of experience for Raegan and Timea and things should start trending up.
Overall still a pretty young lineup, but a talented, seasoned PG transfer would go a long way.
While I am a little worried about how the recent results could affect the quality of recruiting/transfer portal, hopefully recruits see there is still a lot of potential/talent.
Obviously keeping everyone, but especially those four above, is really important.

It's also very possible a majority of the frosh class returns In addition to TVO,and the players make the normal jump that happens for most athletes attending college improving a lot between years one and two. We don't lack talent...we lack experience in a league with 6 top 25 teams,in addition to osu,uo,and ASU teams who are perineal tournament teams.

Thank you for your post. Well stated.
Given the rapid decline the last 3 years of the program, my belief is that SR needs to retain all the current players (except Bendu who can not come back and Noelle who has indicated she will not come back).
Since it has highly unlikely that SR will bring in a quality point guard, then it is critical that everybody else returns.
If that happens, OSU could be middle of the conference.
Also, of course, if by some miracle a quality point guard with at least two years remaining shows up then this team could perhaps contend for the title.

It's not as if Rueck landed a ton of five stars, but his teams have been pretty loaded through the years. In 2013-14, the Beavers had 4-star Sam Siegner, Breanna Brown (No. 49 and 65 overall), Gabby Hanson (No. 28 wing), Jamie Weisner (4-star, No. 41 overall), Sydney Wiese (No. 56 and 66 overall). Add Ali Gibson (McDonald's AA nominee), Ruth Hamblin (Canada) and Deven Hunter (3-star). They finished 24-11. In 2014-15 Rueck added Marie Gulich from Germany. Gulich and Hamblin both turned out to be 5-star level players. They also retained Brown, Siegner, Hanson, Gibson, Weisner, Wiese, Hunter and Hamblin. They finished 27-5. In 2015-16, Rueck added 5-star Katie McWilliams (No. 40 overall) and Taylor Kalmer (No. 31 point guard). OSU retained Hunter, Hamblin, Wiese, Gulich, Weisner, Hanson and Siegner. They finished 32-5. In 2016-17, Rueck added 5-star Mikayla Pivec (No. 24 overall) and Kat Tudor, a proven 3-point specialist. They retained McWilliams, Hanson, Gulich, Wiese and Kalmer. They finished 31-5. In 2017-18, Rueck added Aleah Goodman (4-star, No. 63 overall) and transfer Destiny Slocum (McDonald's AA, No. 7 overall) as well as Taya Corosdale and Joana Grymek (Poland and Seward CC). They retained Pivec, McWilliams, Gulich, Kalmer and Tudor. They finished 26-8. In 2018-19, Rueck added Andrea Aquino (Paraguay) and Jasmine Simmons (Australia). They retained Grymek, Pivec, Goodman, Corosdale, McWilliams, Tudor and Slocum. They finished 26-8. In 2019-20, Rueck added Kennedy Brown (McDonald's AA, No. 19 overall), Taylor Jones (5-star, No. 15 overall) and Jelena Mitrovic. The Beavers retained Pivec, Goodman, Corosdale, Tudor, Slocum, Simmons. They finished 23-9. After that season, retention of the top recruits became an issue. The Beavers were much better year-in and year-out by landing as many highly-rated recruits as possible along with some very good foreign players. The Corosdales and Hunters are the outliers and it's pretty obvious they were underrated.

I think Raegan and Timea are going to stay and with Talia they will form the core. I also think that Adlee and Lily will probably stay. Martha is a question but may see an opening in her position.
I'm hopeful that AJ will stick around, she has a really good shot at getting significant minutes. If Jalena stays, I have no idea if it is good or bad that she is still thinking about it, it would be nice to get another post in the portal but not absolutely necessary.
Does Lex stay or leave I have no idea. Be nice if she stayed for depth.
Donovyn and Kennedie will come here as planned. Kennedie and Lily need to become workout buddies and put some weight on. Donovyn is much more college ready. She could very well surprise us.
Or none of this will happen, not long ago I would be more sure but in the portal era???

No games from 12/19 to 1/17, a 4 week break and then there was another week in February I think. Sasha left to go home and try to help her health issues. Savannah left because mom didn't like Rueck saying her shooting was a work in progress, yes that is what was reported. And Jaz went home to play professional football, the other sport she grew up playing. Lost Kennedy to an torn acl. Aleah graduated and was drafted in the wnba, didn't stick but had an offer at Duke as a recruiter. 21-22 we went 17-14. Lost Taylor 9 games in and she ended up having surgery iirc. Kennedy was called upon to play the 5 to make up for the loss of Taylor. 2 players not happy with how things are going. They left along with Greta and I have no idea why she left but she ended up at Michigan which is a lot closer to Illinois than Corvallis. Taya graduated and was a grad transfer to Duke, can't blame her for wanting to be with her before and get a grad degree from Duke. So we lost 2 + 3 to the portal and in the same time picked up 6. Ellie, Jovanna, Emily, Tea, Bendu, and Lex. To me and everybody else in the world the biggest change that occurred and coincided with the changes is covid. The other big change was the opening of the portal. Interesting that they all ended up closer to home in an era with limited travel. But I guess it is just a lot easier to blame Rueck. Now if we have a mass exodus this year I'll definitely have to reconsider my opinion. Players that graduate have fulfilled their obligations and so I don't see them as bailing on the program. It is generally acknowledged that if is better to get a grad degree from a different university than your undergrad degree.

It is generally acknowledged that if is better to get a grad degree from a different university than your undergrad degree. Who's blaming Rueck? I didn't say that, nor was it the point of my post. I was pointing out that, yes, having highly-rated recruits has been the key to success for the Beavers. In fact, Rueck's recruiting (I know staff also recruits) has been pretty darn good throughout his time at OSU. As for retaining those top recruits/players, again, people get sidetracked by the reasons for leaving. They don't matter. Players made the decision to leave and it has had an impact on the Beavers in the last few seasons. The portal makes that decision easier. So Rueck needs to stay on course with the recruiting but he has to figure out a way not to take major losses in the portal. And while Ellie was a nice pickup, that group absolutely does not match up to those lost (which includes Destiny Slocum. And yeah, she was a grad transfer. So is Yeaney).
