Still really puzzled about Dernedde. He came out of nowhere and played so well in the postseason last year, and then immediately tanked that summer in the WCL, and didn't do much better this spring. I'm just not used to seeing such backsliding in college baseball players that play at OSU. Was his performance in late 2021 a fluke anomaly? Surely the coaches saw something in him and his practice performances at the end of last season to take a flyer on him in the postseason and put him in the lineup, but what has happened in the year since? What kind of player do we have here, really? A .250-.275 hitter who simply has yet to adjust to all the pitching adjustments that have been made on him, or a career Mendoza hitter? At the risk of coming off overly harsh, could it be a work ethic issue, and not putting in the incredible amount of work it takes to continue improving at this level? I'm still struggling to decide if we actually have a shortstop for next year or not... No idea but I’ve been very disappointed. He had some great games hitting but was mostly just an auto out. It was okay until he started falling apart in defense too. He was one of the few players from last year that didn’t improve at the plate. Gretler 2021 88 AB .261 2022 114 AB .193 Dernedde 2021 31 AB .290 2022 199 AB .216 Every other starter over 20 AB in both seasons improved or held more or less even. Fuchs had the same average both years! We have a crap load of infielders coming in and every infield position but first is probably up for grabs with Bazanna possibly moving to the outfield. Assuming Wheeler recovers I think you will see Wheeler, Forrester, Trosky and Guerra getting starts. With the becoming talent we could easily have all new faces except Donkey too.

Those who have seen both rate Kennel above Jeff Hendrix at this stage of their careers. Hendrix became a very good player for us and reached AA with the Yankees. So I would not put too much stock in what some kid from Arizona said. Hendrix was such a great athlete. Kennel or Macias could be given a legit shot to win the shortstop job next fall, since they are both talented athletes. If they are an upgrade,I say give them a shot. Several times we have started newcomers at short in the past. Ely with a homer and a double so far for the Knights in Longview tonight.

Had two hits in his first three at bats for the Knights last night. I'm sure he is a fine prospect
