Also the roster limit changes for 2023. It was 40 for 2022. "Roster size for Spring '23 will be 35, and MAY be up to 40 if a team has seniors who missed 2020 season." Our extras as far as I can tell. Townsend, Gretler, Dukart, Fuchs, Pfennigs (if he stays), Mundt, Logan, Meckler (if he stays). Transfers who may or may not? Boisvert, Ferrer and Carpenter. So looks like we can easily qualify for the extra 5.

Has anyone seen Kennel play before? Asking because my nephew plays for a 1a high school in Arizona that 10 runned Santiam. 10-0. He said that Kennel was weak at the plate. Decent in the field. Just high lights, he looks good. Haven't seen any live action or negative plays ofc.

Last night he started at 2B for the Knights vs. Cowlitz. 4 plate appearances, with 3 SO and 1 HBP.

Most Arizona schools played 10 or so games by the time Oregon high schools headed down for March tournaments and their first games of the season. That looks to be exactly the case in the game you're referencing. How his AB's looked in the first game of the season vs a team who had 10 or so games under their belt, and as judged by an opposing high school player, is probably worth a grain of salt. He was 1 for 3 in State Championship game, a solo HR. That said, like most incoming freshman he will need to make some big adjustments to the pitching he's going to see from here on out. There are good pitchers at almost all high school levels, but the number you face at 3A consistently compared to 5 or 6A is not the same and in most years the very best pitchers are not going to be found in the 3A ranks. Those with talent who are willing to put in the work, will succeed. Those who aren't willing or simply can't deal mentally with no longer being able to succeed on talent alone, will not...

Those who have seen both rate Kennel above Jeff Hendrix at this stage of their careers. Hendrix became a very good player for us and reached AA with the Yankees. So I would not put too much stock in what some kid from Arizona said.

Should have clarified it wasnt the kid saying he was weak. It was the coach (brother in law). Said overall the team looked young. Not sure the average age on the team. I was trying to hype him up. As his Perfect Game rating is 10. But the Golden Sombrero against a school with 220 students didnt help my cause much..

If you listen to the Oregonian beaver podcast,Joe Freeman mentions Bazzana likely will get a shot at centerfield and that will open up a spot for Trosky at 2b. In addition,Frisch could be a huge part of the staff in 2023. Gretler was hurt all year, and his hand/ wrist injury after healing could help him improve his hitting. I too expect one of the talented freshmen to be given a legit shot to win the SS job next spring. Dernette hitting .200 isn't good enough imo. Reed is another one who has a ton of talent...can't wait to see a healthy athlete come next spring. 2023 could be another fun year...

So I would not put too much stock in what some kid from Arizona said. Hendrix was such a great athlete. Kennel or Macias could be given a legit shot to win the shortstop job next fall, since they are both talented athletes. If they are an upgrade,I say give them a shot. Several times we have started newcomers at short in the past.

Meckler has already graduated...nothing to gain by returning as far as draft stock.

Meckler has already graduated...nothing to gain by returning as far as draft stock. Right. His only reason to return would be lack of options or he just thinks they can win big next season and he wants to be part of it. He worked his way into a draft slot or a FA deal, he should take it.

Some guys just want to get on with their lives. Too,another guy to watch for in 2023 is Thomas Dukart. I know he is a very talented athlete. Just needs to stay healthy.

I'd recommend listening to that podcast, Freeman and Daschel spend a lot of time talking about next year. There isn't a ton of new information, but its worth a listen. You did a good job summarizing the main items. Someone could take a chance and draft Frisch, but a rotation of Frisch, Kmatz, and Hunter is a pretty good starting point.

Still really puzzled about Dernedde. He came out of nowhere and played so well in the postseason last year, and then immediately tanked that summer in the WCL, and didn't do much better this spring. I'm just not used to seeing such backsliding in college baseball players that play at OSU.
Was his performance in late 2021 a fluke anomaly? Surely the coaches saw something in him and his practice performances at the end of last season to take a flyer on him in the postseason and put him in the lineup, but what has happened in the year since? What kind of player do we have here, really? A .250-.275 hitter who simply has yet to adjust to all the pitching adjustments that have been made on him, or a career Mendoza hitter? At the risk of coming off overly harsh, could it be a work ethic issue, and not putting in the incredible amount of work it takes to continue improving at this level?
I'm still struggling to decide if we actually have a shortstop for next year or not...
