Our three everyday major leaguers were 7-14 today. Conforto and Rutsch had doubles and combined for two runs and three rbi's. In a losing effort Kwan had an HR, four hits, a run and three rbi's.

Madrigal placed on the IL with a hamstring issue. Just when he was heating up. Madrigal is supposed to be ahead of schedule and is expected to be reactivated any day. The Brewers passed the Reds like they were standing still. The Cubs are now 7.5 games back of the Brewers. Unless the Cubs start winning, a healthy Madrigal still might be trade bait.

The Mariners have given 171 at-bats to Kolten Wong, who is hitting .158, with a pathetic .450 OPS. Jose Caballero is marginally better, at .231/.692, in 156 at-bats. They've combined for 84 strikeouts.
Madrigal will never hit for power, but as far as actually getting on base, hitting for a higher average, advancing runners and making about 75% fewer worthless outs via strikeouts, he would be a definite upgrade.
The Mariners are a strikeout machine. Nevermind getting more hits, anything to reduce the number of worthless outs they make would be helpful.

In the 6+ years of ownership the Stanton "bunch" are beginning to resemble the Blazers. Slow build to the 2022 playoffs seems to be the highwater mark. After reaching the playoffs they basically sat out the FA market other than Gott, La Stella, Pollock for a total of $9 mil and all have been complete nonfactors. Being 10 games out in the West, and 5.5 in the WC... Seattle seems to be sitting at home again for the postseason and have not proven to they will spend money to get the needed pieces. Will they spend to keep their own talent??

Also payed big to keep Castillo, one of the best pitchers in the game, and they signed Ray the previous year to a large contract. They have the best pitching in the game, they just can't hit.

The Twins have a better staff, especially starters, which makes sense giving all of the Mariners' turnover. But you are right, the Mariners' pitching is definitively not the issue.

Madrigal started his rehab assignment in Iowa yesterday. 0/3 with three ground balls to the righthand side. Last I heard, the Cubs are hopeful that Madrigal can return by Wednesday to play the White Sox.

Conforto 4x4 tonight, with an absolute bomb, to deepest center in Milwaukee. He has three homers and eight hits in his last four games. Cubs send Madrigal down to Iowa. He needs a change of scenery, Cubs are stacked in the infield. 2 months later: Season is now 60% complete. It's painful to look at the Giants / Conforto 'experiment' (2 years, $36 million). Giants are doing fairly well, 10 games above .500, in 2nd place, and leading in the wild card race - but Conforto has the 8th best OPS on the team.

He also leads the team in homers, RBIs, and is second in walks. Analytics people greatly downplay the value of RBIs but in my experience the team with more of them generally wins the game. The team and Conforto have an option for the seco d year. My guess is they both will exercise it, and he'll return.

Analytic calculations don't downplay the value of the RBI per se, what they downplay is it's value in any individual statistical measurement. RBI's are an "opportunistic" stat and involve so many factors that can lead to an RBI opportunity, it's difficult to assess it's true weight.

I do know that the team with more RBIs wins about 95-99 percent of the time. So they must be a good thing.

They are almost worthless as a season-long statistic, because RBIs tend to be much very dependent upon what batters in front of you do.

He played seven innings after playing six the game before. However, he was scratched from today's game with "lower body fatigue," which appears to be something of a setback.

Larnach was on the 10-day with pneumonia. He was on a rehab stint in St. Paul and came off the 10-day on the sixth. The Twins just sent Larnach back down to St. Paul yesterday. After a wretched June, Larnach is slugging .826 over the past week down in St. Paul, including hitting a home run in each game from July 2-4. Byron Buxton went on paternity leave today, so the Twins recalled Trevor Larnach. Larnach's trip back to Minneapolis may not last longer than the Mariners series, though, unless he starts tearing the cover off of the ball. It is sad that Larnach cannot make the regular roster for the eighth-worst hitting team in baseball.
