At the beginning of the season Brown was asked who her best friend was on the team, she hesitated and then said Taya. She came here as besties with Brown, so something went wrong there and if Taya leaves I think she wasn't really close to anyone else on the team. Taya is don here. There’s a reason she walked with the Seniors. It has nothing to do with Brown.

At some time that changed and with Taya, I think, leaving then Brown has no close friends on the team.

I believe this whole portal situation is becoming very challenging for Coach Rueck. I believe he built the foundation of his OSU success on developing talent and teamwork to overcome the built in disadvantages that being in a small state with limited available talent created. So now when he gets players who are not willing to take the time and effort to develop, his whole system is in question. To me perhaps he might consider recruiting mainly in the West and perhaps overseas. In general you do not see the overseas players bailing out when the first relative, aau coach, rival coach, etc. whisper in their ear that they are really the next Brianna Stewart but their current ignorant coach was not able to see it. This is a tremendous challenge for Coach Rueck. Any ideas from the group on how to approach it. Keep in mind, all our incoming highly rated recruits are from distant states. We have a lot of similar thoughts and questions. SR's recruiting has always appeared to be very relationship oriented and it has worked well for him....Sasha and Kennedy are two good examples, but after they arrived in Corvallis there wasn't enough something here to keep them. Times have changed though. The portal plays just as big of a role as recruiting, and in some ways it is more important because in recruiting you can't lose what you already have, but in the portal, you can lose and you can gain. If SR is behind times, (and that was an 'if') he needs to step up his portal game. It's not unlike the business world. Right now, I have to do everything I can to keep employees and find employees. If you let up for a minute, you will lose out to someone else. I love the "We are family" theme, but I wonder how well the Beavs have made it work in recent years. I don't think SR took the best of advantage of the portal last season, and I'm hoping he learned a lot from that. There are plenty of openings on the Beavs roster now, so it's time to take advantage of the portal. With 1000 players in the transfer portal last year, we weren't able to pick up enough talent to get us back in the tournament, and that was with getting Kennedy back from injury. "He needs to step up his portal game" is an understatement; Mack was an all-conference player with NCAA tournament experience, and she was a relatively low risk. Nobody else he's brought in have been Pac-12 starter level, and we needed them to be. There's 900 already in the portal again this year, I sure hope we don't keep having elite talent flow one direction in the transfer portal.

Mictrovic is limited in what she can do defensively. So is Taylor! Big loss defensively. Jelena’s pure size alters shots around the rim, and I think Taylor is much better defensively than you give her credit for. KB is a good defender, but I never thought she was as impactful as Ruth, Marie, or even Taya is. I’m not discounting Jelenas blocking ability but if we play man defense with her more times than not the team playing us will move Jelena outside the circle with the person she guards to open up the inside. That’s how you nullify her height advantage. It doesn’t take much to do this even with a zone. Because of her feet you just need a little space to swing the ball around then back door her. She has to stay put to be affective. Taylor backs most offensive posts which gets her in foul trouble. . Rueck doesn’t teach fronting or siding posts so she is a easy set up to draw fouls. She gets jiddery down low and over reacts with her arms. She needs to keep her feet on the ground and hands straight up not be tempted to block every time. Taylor can get into foul trouble trying so hard to block shots. If these are the only posts we have next year we could have a hard time if our posts get into foul trouble. Timea and Reagan are 3 and 4 defensively but on offense they are 3 4 and 5. They are skilled offensively. Tall mobile player with the loss of brown. Kennedy will go some place like Norte dame they are looking for someone like her. She has so many skills. Even the ducks might go for her. We shall see!

Kennedy saw the hand writing on the wall. Someone who I believe was disconnected from the team and might fit well at a mid-major.

The choices she makes in her life are based on all the information she has at the time the decision is made. Regardless of how this plays out, we should wish her all the best. She will be missed.

You guys did a great job of deciphering that it was most likely going to be KB to the portal after Norm posted his teaser about this over on the portal thread. I'm with the group that thinks if Taylor comes back full strength and with JM's improved play and with the strong freshman coming in that we can move forward without KB and maybe even be better off. I really liked KB's defense, rebounding, and athleticism but her offensive game never really panned out. I wish her well and think she will most likely end up at another power 5 school rather than a mid-major----perhaps at Iowa State to play with her sister.

Yes, best wishes to KB! There was a strange vibe this year, and I hope the little nagging issues clear up so the team can get back to playing for the love of it again. If there are/were problems, I hope everyone - from the Head Coach all the way down to the towel passer-outer - can look inside themselves deeply for the benefit of each other. Go Beavs!

Um...KB is not a mid-major level player. No way. She is an elite athlete who just needs to complete her game, and she has a couple of years ahead of her to do it.

A couple of other thoughts. As far as playing with her sister, remember she still has another year of high school left. Another year for KB past her injury and maybe we see more improvement to her game. As others have mentioned, the combo of injury rehab, playing a position that’s not her favorite, and not playing as well as she would have liked may have contributed to feelings of restlessness and unhappiness. The only positive to me is opening up more playing time and opportunity for Beers and Gardiner. Hopefully the ends portal additions for the Beavs this season.

This helps explain why SR rearranged the starting lineup in the WNIT to Jelena, Taya, Ellie, TVO and Emily. Greta and KB were both removed. SR knew both were leaving several weeks ago.

Kennedy’s postgame interview with Ron Callan after the exciting W vs USC in OT on her last-second rebound and basket. Nice to see a smile
Nothing but best wishes to her moving forward. Hope she finds what she’s looking for.

But it made some sense aside from what SR may or may not have known. I thought starting Jelena and Ellie had its own logic given how well both were playing at the end of the season.

It's her life. She only has one, so let her live it. If she's unhappy here, then there is no point in staying, it doesn't help her or the team.
Thank her for her contributions, wish her the best of luck, and move on. Next woman up.
I also don't think it's a coincidence the women transferring were recruited from far outside our traditional recruiting areas. Arkansas, Illinois and Kansas are a long way from Oregon. Our great teams consisted almost exclusively of West Coast kids.
And kids transferring is hardly an indictment of our program. If you look around the country, almost every program, successful or not, is getting hit with the transfer bug.

And yet another reason to always cheer for the name on the front of the jersey, not on the back. Sometimes people (me included) get too emotionally invested in athletes who, deep down, always are looking out for their best interests (as they should, because no one else is). They can't worry about whose feelings they hurt.
