The portal only allows ONE freebie. If you go the other route (more lenient whatever that may mean) then the NCAA would have to "rule" on such things as HC changes, hard ship on arse hole coaches, etc as it could mean a player can move each time their coach leaves. Hence, signs a NLI, sign early, coach subsequently fired/leaves/retires, allowed to change. The in a Soph or Jr year it happens again, etc. Or medical hardships approved, denied without making sense sometimes. The portal helps eliminate a ton of crazy NCAA rulings where kids were granted immediate eligibility others not and no one knew the reasoning. Kids can transfer once with immediate eligibility, then again as a grad transfer. Whether it is deemed good or bad it saved the NCAA a TON of work and allows athletes the same freedoms as "normal" students. Coupling it with Covid and the wild west of the NIL is making it more problematic and allows for all sorts of conspiracy theories. Plus an entire new "legit" 3rd party biz of running NIL sites for schools. * Funny thing, I did not hear OSU fan complain of the portal much last offseason when when gained some key transfers. Also portal numbers are often misinterpreted. Less than 25% are from P5 schools. The latest numbers I saw: Transfers OUT1117 total D1 in portal 227 are P5 890 non P5 312 Grad trans 140 previously trans D1 to D1 316 number of D1 schools with a transfer Transfers IN
245 new school committed > 62 to P5 > 139 to non P5 > 44 to non D1 201 D1 to D1 27 D1 to DII 3 D1 to DIII 11 D1 to NAIA 3 D1 to JUCO I was complaining last year - but it was because we did NOT get key transfers from the portal; on paper, WT did much better with it last year than SR did. Realistically the portal should be more of a "sure thing" to gauge a players' development and ability to play versus D1 talent. You also have the ability to research their college level academics and ability to be "coached". Where as a HS player is a blank canvas in many of those areas. In both cases fans tend to overestimate HS recruits that are "hyped", and downplay transfers with less than stellar stats (I tend to look there first as I do not have the ability to research academics and coachability). In both cases the schools of interest and offers also seem to play in to fan excitement or negativity although are often very inaccurate if you just look at recruiting sites. Hell, even player tweets have proven false in some cases. My "outside looking in" view of both programs... WT went quickly with the newest fad, and SR still hanging on to the traditional HS building blocks. WT attempted to go all in with the transfer trend and got burned. It is something that needs to be studied and have the right connections that differ from HS recruiting. SR??? I'm not sure he's a portal fan. I'm sure he's going to take talent if players "fall into his lap", but he seems more old school and wants to develop them "his way" from day one. The "little general" tag some use seems to apply to this recruiting stuff. Either way he's going to have to adapt as you can't have a team full of inexperience/frosh. Plus, he should have noticed by now, if you bring in 4-5 talent frosh, odds are 2-3 will be leaving by year 2!? Both coaches will need to learn, adapt, or fall by the way in terms of Pac12 relevance.

Some of my thoughts on guards. Most of these players are followed by OSU coaches recently: PG: - I like the Cavinder twins, but my gut tells me they’re headed to a school in Florida or Arizona. - Van Gytenbeek makes a lot of sense. Within the Pac-12 footprint, knows the Pac-12, knows some of our players. Good shooter and true PG. I think she could be a lesser impactful Aleah. - Maddie Krull from South Dakota intrigues me. She was a relatively highly rated recruit. Didn’t have a great sophomore campaign, but she was a key player on a really good USD team. I’ll say she follows her coach to WVU. - Kayla Williams from UC Irvine would be a nice get. She’s another one from the Pac-12 footprint and she was a top-100 recruit. SG/W
- Sarah Bates from Georgia Tech may be a possibility. OSU would be her fourth school. She’d be a shooter off the bench. Probably wouldn’t log a ton of minutes, but could be a decent role player. Started her career at UCSB. - Kemery Martin would be a solid option. She has good length and versatility. She’s been inconsistent at Utah, but she had a good sophomore year when she was All Pac-12 HM. - Brynna Maxwell would add a much needed sharpshooter. She’s given OSU fits over the years and perhaps she could settle into a Kat Tudor role if she works on her defense. - Stephanie Visscher from SFA has a solid all around game. I’m hesitsnt about mid-major transfers, but she’s had a solid career for a really strong SFA program. - Bendu Yeaney may be looking to return home for her last stop. Started for an AZ team that was the national runner up. Not a big scorer, but a solid player whose defense, athleticism, experience, and toughness would benefit OSU. I’ll look to add a few later. Took a longer look and read some articles about Maddie Krull today. She would be way up there on my wish list. Not much not to like. The bad news is that she is showing interest in West Virgina because her head coach at South Dakota, who she appears to have really liked, is the new Head coach at West Virginia. The slim hope of good news is that she and Jenny H are following each other on twitter, and Jenny is following both of Maddie's parents as well. She would be a really nice get to play along side Talia.

I wonder how the portal is going to affect a HS players attitude about their initial recruitment and commitment. It makes it easier to try out a school and if it doesn't live up to expectations or if they just want to try a different experience just enter the portal.

I thought Washington might mop up some of the NW talent, but I almost completely forgot about Gonzaga. I think that's a good choice for Maxwell. I would have been pleased to see her end up as a Beav, but it doesn't look like we showed much interest. Good pickup for the Zags.

There goes a good possible starp shooter, oh well. We do have to good shooters coming in but both are going to be fed to the loins without some time to grow and develope. AJ had a nice shot. We could use some experienced leader to lead in that position. Which has been said before.

That's a well constructed and thought out statement. She tells everybody, 'this is what I want to do after I graduate.' It leaves the impression that she went to Utah to get a degree and play basketball. She's got the degree, and, like every other graduate, has to determine what to do next. Since she has 2 years remaining to play ball, one of those options is to go somewhere else, play ball, and get her Masters paid for. And that's what she's choosing to do.
I think those on the Utah board, and their fan base as a whole, will be generally understanding and supportive of that decision, and she will always be welcomed back in Provo as an alum - which she will be. Just as Taya will be here.
Gonzaga seems a good fit for her - good program, faith based school, semi-close to Utah. Wish her well as she moves forward.

West Virginia got Blacksten from Colorado - may impact Krull’s decision to go there (I assume positively)

If Instagram followings mean anything -- it looks like Daniels may be headed to Arizona and Pili to Utah. The PAC-12 to PAC-12 transfer rate seems really high due to kids wanting to stay on the west coast and there being very few non-PAC-12 Power 5 options (though BYU is now one).
I'll be interested to see who USC can get out of the portal. Sounds like they've been hosting quite a few visitors.
I'm still hopeful the Beavs can get a point guard, an additional guard, and a forward/post.

With Jenkins and now Maxwell, they are now 0-2 w/ bringing local players back home. The coaches keep changing, but the story stays the same. I don't know what it is, but they just can't seem to get local talent in the fold.
