It looks like fans on teams with needs are expecting actual portal shopping to begin this week. Jumping around boards nationally and there is a ton of competition out there to find players to fill weaknesses. For example Notre Dame is shopping for a post player and looking at the portal for that need. I am guessing the next two months is critical and very competitive because players will be deciding who to look at.
Maybe a couple of portal surges like one right after March madness. Probably not like last year but shopping should be good.
A deep run in the WNIT would be a nice advertisement for Scott to use.

Question,
Who was the last true high quality point guard that Coach Rueck recruited? For the sake of this discussion, please exclude Destiny Slocum even though you could make a case that she was "recruited". In fact, her ultimate decision to bail out before her eligibility was up I believe reinforces my position stated below.
My perception is that the impression among point guard recruits (and transfer portal players) is that Coach Rueck's offense stifles their abilities and possibilities for future basketball employment.
There is clearly some reason that year after year after year goes by with no real change in this pattern.
Am I way off base on this (I usually am on most issues!), if so please set me straight!
Thank you to all.
Go Beavers!

Yeah yeah yeah, you sound like a broken record. Let's see, Aleah and Syd were pretty good point guards. At least the wnba think so since both were drafted.

It's not like Rueck hasn't tried to get that elite point guard with great athleticism. It's kind of short sighted to say recruits at the point think Rueck's offense is stifling their game. We were in the final 3 for Williams from Dallas Texas who started at Stanford, and Canada from Los Angeles who went to Ucla. Losing out to those two schools isn't a crime. Really tough competition. You would have to ask them if they went elsewhere because of Rueck and his offense.

Well, Slocum did jump ship twice. At her last stop one could argue that she was in a much more free-wheeling offense at Arkansas, but her stats actually went down pretty much across the board. Maybe the "style of play" was more a Slocum problem than a Rueck problem? I could be wrong, but the only place I see this notion supported that Rueck stifles PGs is right here by our own fans. If this becomes "a thing" who is to blame? Rueck, for trying to run his team how he sees fit, or a bunch of complaining fans who need a reason to park their displeasure in? We all want to see a premier PG come here to compliment the wealth of talent that OSU has at the other positions. Just a guess, but I'm thinking Scott Rueck is right at the top of that list.

It appears that the Cavinder twins out of Fresno State may be entering the transfer portal.
They've built massive social media followings and inked big time NIL deals, and they're also pretty good at basketball. Haley in particular would be a really good get -- 19.8 PPG, 9.4 RPG, 166/84 A:TO, 44.6 FG%, 37.3 FG%, 97.3 FT%.
They're from Arizona and played on the Adidas circuit, so they know Talia, Taylor, and Kennedy.

Jordyn Jenkins is transferring from USC. Tough loss for Gottlieb. 14.8 PPG and 6.7 RPG as a sophomore for Jenkins. I'm sure Tina Langley will be all over her.

Good point, but I believe both of those great players were recruited as mainly shooting guards and became excellent point guards (often took 2 years).
Also who knows what might have been in regards to more wins if they had been able to be the shooting guards and play with an excellent point guard.
Also, there have been years (such as this past one) where the cupboard was basically bare of point guard talent.
Thanks for your feedback!

Both primarily played the point through their 4 years of high school. Aleah was the 5a player of the year for 3 years, not many sophomores do that. Aleah was one of two point guards that Rueck let call a majority of the plays. The other was Sage Indendi.

believeinthebeavs,
Thank you for your comments, I was not aware that Aleah was a point guard in high school. She played shooting guard at OSU early on so I assumed (incorrectly) that is what she played in high school. What a great player she was for us. That kind of dedication, effort, and determination it what I am hoping happens for several players on our current roster. Unfortunately it is a rare combination.

TVO said she pretty much just played PG through high school also. The only problem with TVO as I see it is that other teams know that she was half of the Beaver offense so they constantly double teamed her to force her to give the ball to someone else. What the Beav's needs is another offensive threat so that TVO can be the PG. To allow other teams dictate that TVO not be the PG seems kinda...defeatist?

Unfortunately the players we signed up to be those offensive threats (A.J. and Greta) did not become those threats. Hopefully they will this coming year. Also Kennedy and Jelena have to become better scorers in the post area for the Coach Rueck offense to function well. Who knows about Taylor Jones, shoulder injuries can often end careers. Also looks we will have to replace both Mack and Corsdale (sure wish she would go another year).

Jenkins was one of those players who made a big leap forward this season over her previous seasons. I'm sure Gottlieb had big plans for her for 22/23.....Physical, athletic and developed an OK shot to compliment her game. Seattle girl who may want to go home....If anyone learns about her destination I'd be interested to find out.... I don't think she's a player who would be a great help to the Beavs, but she will be a great pickup for some team somewhere... GO BEAVS!!
