I didn’t like him because his style was just so simple. His columns aimed for views, which meant he was a gossip columnist/opinion writer working as a sports editor. I would rather he had stayed above it all, but that’s hard to do when you sensationalize everything. In reality, I suspect the media and the times created the man. He rose above neither, but played them both to his advantage. Perhaps that’s good business sense, but I think a lot of people aren’t especially fond of clickbait titles and sports talk with pointless debates. He was not working as a sports editor. He was strictly a columnist. And yes, unfortunately the game is to get as many clicks as possible. Whether you love him or hate him, he did his job. If by "his job" you meant helping to run a newspaper into the ground, yeah he did a hell of a job.

He was one of the few getting clicks.

The tallest midget argument again....they're getting less money per viewer. They aren't a grocery store who can make it back up on volume.

I'm glad he's gone. The thing I disliked most about him was how often he looked down on the morals of others, as if he was some paragon of virtue. Just raw arrogance in that regard. Must be nice to be perfect all the time.

One last thing and I'm done.
About once a year John would squeeze out a heart-rending story about a local desperately sick kid or down on his luck former athlete in an attempt to offset his well-earned reputation as an a**hole. The subjects were often worthy of attention and compassion. But the stories were so transparently self-serving that it undercut any empathy he was trying to drum-up. The only thing I remember about any of those tales now is the way he invariably placed himself at the center of each and every one.

Unfortunately, that’s what the “news” has become. But as you said, John was not a newsman. He was an opinion columnist. He was paid to write what he thought, not to be an objective source. Despite what Irimi says, it's a huge distinction and titles do matter. A news reporter and an opinion columnists are as different as a defensive tackle and a quarterback. Yes, I agree. Titles do matter, perhaps. At least, we can agree that functions matter. I assumed he was the sports editor because it was the sports editor of the Columbus Dispatch who wrote the opinion pieces and responded to the mail. Oregonian must be set up differently. In my opinion, the opinion pieces that Canzano wrote were cheap and without quality of thought. I’m looking forward to reading his replacement’s first few articles.

Must be nice to be perfect all the time. You mean his own morals? I mean cheating on your wife isn't necessarily illegal, but it's pretty hilarious to see him talk about morals. HYPOCRITE

angrybeavs.com/media/12958And this is why Crapzano and Danny Moran can GFT as long as they shall live. Good riddance. Oh, and by the way Lebanonbeav, maybe you should look in the mirror at your continued TDS - pretty funny when you call out the haters of Crapzano and Moran.

Yes, because Angry Beavs is the king of journalistic integrity. You just justified hating one reporter with zero credibility with another. They’re both garbage.
