I meant prior to the NCAA tourney run. There were plenty of people saying a change needed to happen.
Extensions have always been the lever that's been pulled at OSU to keep coaches. In fact, everyone does it.
UCLA - Gave Mick Cronin a 2 year extension (and bumped him up to $4M per year
Michigan - Extended Juwon Howard and gave him a $1M per year raise
Arkansas - Extended Eric Musselman (and paying him $4M per year)
Baylor - AD was quoted as saying they are "enhancing the total package" for Scott Drew
USC - extended Enfield
Gonzaga - Can't find any info on Mark Few's contract, but they're private and don't have to disclose anything
Houston - extended Sampson
OSU - Extended Tinkle
Loyola - coach took the Oklahoma job
Oral Roberts - Extended Paul Mills
Syracuse - Has a living legend that can coach as long as he wants
Villanova - Jay Wright is the third highest paid coach in the nation, he doesn't need an extension
Alabama - Extended Nate Oats (announced before tournament)
Florida State - Extended Leonard Hamilton (announced before tournament)
Creighton - McDermott has been there forever, and a contract extension likely would've been bad PR after he said "everyone needed to stay on the plantation" when talking about his team.
Oregon - Extended Altman
Virtually every coach of a team that made the Sweet 16 last year got a contract extension. It's not like giving Tinkle and extension was ridiculous or reckless here. That's what happens.
