Is it just me or does anyone else find the constant rehashing of comparisons of Tinkle to Robinson and vice versa tiresome. I really don’t care which of the two is/was “better” — at least as justification for whether WT should be kept or let go. Robinson was let go. It was before I joined this board, so I don’t know what the reaction was here, but I was certainly ready to see him go. When they hired WT, I wasn’t thinking “well I hope he ends up being slightly better than Robinson.”
My hope each season for the two college teams I root for are: 1) contend for a conference championship; 2) make the NCAA tourney or at least the NIT. Do I expect those two things to happen every season? Not necessarily, but they should happen with some consistency at least. Under Tinkle, they’ve only finished in top 4 in conference (actually tied for 4th) once in 8 seasons. Don’t bring up a .500 conference record to me — that’s not contending. I’d take a sub .500 overall conference record if the team finished in the top 4 in conference 4 of 8 years. So in my mind, Tinkle has not been successful in fulfilling hope 1. Now Tinkle has made NCAA tourney twice. Impressive? No, but given the Beavers’ recent track record and that one of those was an E8 run, I think WT has done OK in that area. Wouldn’t say that he’s been successful in fulfilling hope 2, but I can certainly see why some would say he has been.
The financial issues seem to assure that WT will get at least one more year. But if that wasn’t the case, I’m just not sure why people thinks he deserves more time based on the last 8 years. Do people really believe that if WT is here for another 8 years, the results will be then we’ve seen? I just don’t see it. Based on this year’s performance and what will possibly be returning, I have a hard time believing WT will start his “next 8 run” on a high note. I get that Oregon State had a long stretch of bad men’s basketball results, but at least to me that’s no reason to accept mediocrity now.

That's not true. You have a poor memory. People have been calling for Tinkle to lose his job for a long time...go back and look. The situation in front of us is unique. Hell, the last guy to take the Beavers to the dance and to the Elite Eight has the court named for him. Granted, that's an unfair comparison because Miller was legend. But it just goes to show that what Tinkle did accomplish was pretty amazing. The coach that replaces Tinkle better have things working from the start. Actually, I have a good memory. Some "people" have been calling for him to be fired for a long time, other "people" have not. What the percentage is of each group is speculative. Meaning what, exactly? How does this support your notion that the next coach doesn't have to be good, just slightly better. Interesting use of quotation marks, by the way. Hope you didn't learn that at OSU.

I don’t think there were many folks that advocated firing him after last season. That would have looked pretty bad! I think most of the irritation comes from giving him an extension at that time. Talk about a knee-jerk reaction! It was also unnecessary. I meant prior to the NCAA tourney run. There were plenty of people saying a change needed to happen. Extensions have always been the lever that's been pulled at OSU to keep coaches. In fact, everyone does it. UCLA - Gave Mick Cronin a 2 year extension (and bumped him up to $4M per year Michigan - Extended Juwon Howard and gave him a $1M per year raise Arkansas - Extended Eric Musselman (and paying him $4M per year) Baylor - AD was quoted as saying they are "enhancing the total package" for Scott Drew USC - extended Enfield Gonzaga - Can't find any info on Mark Few's contract, but they're private and don't have to disclose anything Houston - extended Sampson OSU - Extended Tinkle Loyola - coach took the Oklahoma job Oral Roberts - Extended Paul Mills Syracuse - Has a living legend that can coach as long as he wants Villanova - Jay Wright is the third highest paid coach in the nation, he doesn't need an extension Alabama - Extended Nate Oats (announced before tournament) Florida State - Extended Leonard Hamilton (announced before tournament) Creighton - McDermott has been there forever, and a contract extension likely would've been bad PR after he said "everyone needed to stay on the plantation" when talking about his team. Oregon - Extended Altman Virtually every coach of a team that made the Sweet 16 last year got a contract extension. It's not like giving Tinkle and extension was ridiculous or reckless here. That's what happens.

They would of course be highly sought after by other schools. Tinkle? Not by a long shot. That’s all.

Nobody has any clue if Tinkle has had any interest or enquiries from outside. We had people on here insisting Riley had no interest from anyone, yet Nebraska snapped him up, even after a losing season.
OSU hasn't have a reputation as a basketball school in decades, and in spite it all Tinkle has had the the best overall results of any coach here since Miller retired. There's just no knowing if there's been no interest.

Yet the best job he got offered/took was the supposed dumpster fire here? So we can't get better but he may have never had any other offers? He might have had offers so the extension with his record was warranted like other highly successful consistent coaches? How many here would bet real $ he's had an offer from a better job than OSU? Well, of course then there's the whole argument of what constitutes "better"?? But, in the end he's here to stay. Guessing for longer than 1 more season unless it equals this season or a donor comes up unhappy and with $$. So, buckle up for 5 wins (optimist) or less this season, key transfer(s) out (pessimism), below average signees (the norm), and 12-14 or less Ws next season (dependent on NC wins), and attendance supposedly averaging 4k. Yippee!

Not by a long shot. That’s all. So our guy, who is not a top tier coach, takes a team that is also not top tier to the Elite 8, and you don't think they should've extended him? I'm legitimately blown away that there is a group of people out there that think it didn't make sense to extend him after the season. Like, I had my doubts about Gary Andersen from the get go as I have extended family in Wisconsin, but I understood that he probably needed to be hired when he expressed interest in the job. Hindsight is always 20/20, but it made sense at the time. Extending Tinkle was a no brainer.

Not for a one-off season, although yes, it was great! I would have preferred a sit down and outline expectations for this year to earn an extension. But that’s just me.

I had no problem with him getting an additional year but another year plus three. Let's get real. With that contract we are just being laughed at. And WT is laughing all the way to the bank.

I had no problem with an extension. But I just didn't see the benefit of extending him all the way through the 26-27 season. It is not like his overall body of work at OSU was going to get him better job offers. Giving such a long contract extension hamstrings the ADs flexibility going forward.

That's what happens. As others have pointed out, the extension, especially given WT’s body of work, was for too many years. I mean how many of these coaches led teams that had to win its conference tournament to get into tourney? The E8 run was great, but there was very little if any indication from the regular season or previous seasons under WT that the tournament success was laying the groundwork for future sustained success.
