34 runs so far this weekend without the long ball. Simple base hits, working counts for walks, base stealing, bunting, top notch defense, pitching that digs deep to get out of a jam, and a little extra base hit here and there. The team just seems so balanced, like you can't even get an easy out with the bottom of the order. Got a feeling this will be a fun season.

Gonzaga played in the NCAA tournament in 2021, 2018 and 2016, and won a game each time. It advanced to the WCC championship series in 2019. By any metric Gonzaga is a quality baseball program. And they might have finished 6th or 7th in the PAC 12 those years, if they were lucky. And winning 1 game in a regional is not a sign of greatness. Gonzaga split two in Seattle with Washington, which finished second in the Pac-12; split two games in the Fort Worth Regional with Arizona State, which finished fourth in the Pac-12; and swept both Oregon and Washington State. The Bulldogs' 1-2 starters were Eli Morgan and Brandon Bailey, who have both pitched in the Majors. Wyatt Mills was the closer and also pitched in the Majors. Taylor Jones was the first baseman and also played in the Majors. Winning one game of a regional is not a sign of greatness, but it does detract mightily from your 6th or 7th sentence immediately prior. Plus, it would take no amount of luck for Gonzaga to have won the Pac-12 outright. They certainly were better than Utah. 2018 Gonzaga took the season series from Washington State but went 0-6 otherwise, losing to Oregon, Oregon State, Stanford and Washington and twice against UCLA in the Minneapolis Regional. In the game against the Beavers, the Bulldogs went up 2-0 in the third. Zak Taylor got one back in the third on a solo shot to left. Cadyn Grenier started off the sixth by working a walk and stole second. Madrigal ground out to the right side of the infield to move Grenier over to third. Larnach then brought Grenier home with a base hit. Two innings later, Larnach gave Oregon State a 3-2 lead on a solo shot to left. Rutschman followed Larnach with a base hit and was bunted over to second by Gretler. Joe Casey came in to run for Rutschman. Preston Jones hit a base hit. Casey tried to score from second and was thrown out at the plate. Jones moved over to second on the throw. Taylor walked on six pitches. Andy Armstrong then added the insurance run on a base hit to right center. Christian Chamberlain was phenomenal, throwing 3 2/3 no-hit innings in relief. Mully allowed runners on second and third with one out and gave up a run on a wild pitch (Gretler catching) before inducing a fly out and striking out the final batter to pick up the save. 2021 Gonzaga swept Washington and Washington State and were swept by Oregon, including losing in the Eugene Regional. The Bulldogs only won one of the three against Oregon State, although one was in Surprise and two were in Corvallis. Gonzaga's one win in 2021 was against LSU in Eugene. That was a big win, especially considering that LSU went on to beat Central Connecticut and Gonzaga and Oregon twice. Winning one win may not be a sign of greatness, but it shows you how great Gonzaga was in 2021. Definitely a good team.

When will that be? UC Irvine? Or our first loss? ;-) Maybe some don't have short memories?? Our preseason schedule is by no means that challenging. Sort of like a 20 run outing, 10-1 start to a season, and go just over .500 the last 50 games. If Fritsch is actually seriously injured that's 1/3 of the potentially potent starting staff. These first dozen or so games should be Ws or highly a close, competitive loss or two. Especially if this team is a top 4 Pac12 team. A wait and see attitude isn't negativity or skepticism. You have a lot of good stuff here. A wait-and-see attitude is pretty much the definition of skepticism. Doubting Thomas had to wait and see to believe.

What’s funny is that you can claim that Gonzaga is not a good team, but you can’t say that the Beavers are a good team even though you are basing your determination on the same sample size. Weird. Minimally, you should allow for the possibility that Gonzaga may be a very good team and that you cannot determine their worth until they play someone good.

Can all the people that say Gonzaga is not a good team also agree to STFU for 1 year if Gonzaga makes the tourney? If you can't step up to that, then probably STFU now....

I’m sorry. What are you claiming not to have said? [br I said it’s too early to tell how good this team is. It’s pretty simple if you learn how to read. br] Let me know when Gonzaga makes a Super Regional. Nice personal attack. I’ll one up you. Read my post again and tell me what was the main idea. I claim that you can’t say Gonzaga is a bad team (which you have) based only on 2 games. Especially since you can’t say that the Beavers are a good team (wait and see) after only 2 games. Learn to read.

It ain’t belief if you see it with your own eyes, is it? We’ve played two games against bad teams. What do you want? How do you know the other teams are bad? Haven’t they also played too few games to really know? Or is it easier for you to detect crappy teams? C’mon Smails, I know you are hesitant and that’s fine, but why make a big deal about it? So that you can come in later like some of those basketball folk and say “I told you so”? What’s the big deal? We just saw some very good baseball. Tight defense. Good pitching…maybe not as strong as in years past, but good. Strong base running. Strong hitting. We won both games comfortably. Worked in some players off the bench. So, if our margins of victory were slimmer, say 5-2 or the like, I could see your hesitance. But putting up 20 runs means something. Dominating over weaker teams is important. Yeah, we have to prove ourselves in the Pac, but we are proving ourselves right now in grand style. But you can jump in later in the season and say you told us. That’ll be good for you. For me, my team is #1…until they aren’t. I believe in them because not believing sucks. Yeah, maybe I’ll feel downhearted when they lose, but I’d rather feel downhearted than vindicated.

You have a lot of good stuff here. A wait-and-see attitude is pretty much the definition of skepticism. Doubting Thomas had to wait and see to believe. It ain’t belief if you see it with your own eyes, is it? λέγει αὐτῷ ὁ Ἰησοῦς Ὅτι ἑώρακάς με Θωμᾷ πεπίστευκας μακάριοι οἱ μὴ ἰδόντες καὶ πιστεύσαντες Jesus said to him [Thomas], “Have you come to believe because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and have believed.” The key word is "πεπίστευκας" It's not "πέπεισμαι" That would be more like convinced/persuaded. According to Ἰωάννης (John), Thomas πεπίστευκας (believes/believed). John 20:29 is usually better read in conjunction with Luke 24:36-43, where the disciples believe that they are seeing a ghost and not Jesus. But Jesus asks that they feel his body to make sure that he is real and watch him eat food (because of a belief at the time that ghosts cannot eat food). The whole point in John is to speak to a wider audience, so it is important that he notes that Thomas still only believes/believed, as opposed to is convinced/persuaded. In all reality, though, your post is really a difficult psychological and philosophical question that is sort of touched on in the Gospel but not really delved into.
