I liked that leadership too. But I gotta admit.....I sort of liked that JM got annoyed and fired up

Mitrovic had a 1 handed(maybe even her left hand) catch of a lob entry pass in the 1st half that she gathered in and scored on the lay-up. Very good footwork/eye-hand coordination to make that play for a Big. I noticed(with the recent Benny's House conversations) and was impressed.

Ellie took some hard falls in both games this weekend. It was good to see her bounce back from them I had to smile when she was asked about one of her falls, and she said she was feeling a little beat up "because I'm pretty old". Lol.

Concur that Jelena is a lot more assertive with the ball. Would love for the passers to find her in the low post more often and for her to just turn and shoot without putting it on the floor. Improved for certain.
I also feel like the team doesn't shift the game plan drastically depending on who is playing the 5 >> KB or JM. There have been teams in the past when the bench 5 would enter the game and it was VERY noticeable the plan had to change to accommodate her. Nice to have the depth.

Yes, Jelena does not seem to move laterally very , nor does she use her height and arm length to keep defenders away from the ball. A little movement and a deke or two - and she would create shooting space without always trying to dribble out of soft pressure ! The much shorter UCLA post was able to ‘easily’ step away from Jelena and center the ball off the square. Those layups are usually ending up as ‘and ones’ - as good as a three pointer !

I wonder why she brings Her arms down and why She has trouble catching the pass. She did score 8 with 10 boards. In my book She needs more coaching and much more strength. She is no way comparable to Ruth or to the German who could run the floor and score. She could get there in time. I would not be critical of the early opinions because I see them as accurate. Seems Honest opinions bring out snarky people. I am glad we won. Offense was a bit better . To beat elite teams we must improve again as much as we have.

Jelena did something vs UCLA that she has not done before, and that was catch the ball with her back to the basket and then turn and shoot w/o putting the ball on the floor. And I should add, made the bucket!

Well... in "grade school" coaching every big, hell everyone, was taught to keep your arms/hands up on D. Even on the free throw lane. Problem with that coaching is that your arms have to come down and if they are up/extended they can only go one direction... DOWN. Great defenders of all sizes play with their arms in passing lanes with the ability to extend high or low. All things being fairly equal, as a player you have a defender right where you want them if they become stationary with their arms extended. I'm betting she's been the biggest kid on the block her entire life and just sticking her arms in the air has gotten positive results... boards, blocks, shot attempts. Playing position defense, isn't taught a lot in the younger groups these days. Lateral movement drills, hand/arm positioning, and defensive "cushion" have to be a daily routine. Jelena just needs to keep flex in her elbows, hands ear high, move to keep a cushion so the offensive player can get into her body. Her hands then can be in position to deflect a drop off pass, go up to deflect a lob or block a shot. Extended arms tend to make you stop moving your feet. It's a hard habit to break. We use to teach "bounce" in both the knees and elbows, be active not reactive with the feet and hands. But, with her size if she can create a bit of cushion and keep her hands lower she will block more shots cleanly as she'll be extending to the ball, not coming down on the ball. IF that all makes sense??

Just really encouraged by their play this past weekend. The team had to adjust to their new backcourt early season, then had to adjust all over again when a (really) key interior player went down. Those adjustments just don't happen overnight.
As poorly as they played up north, I felt like they really gelled these past two games. I loved the grit I saw against UCLA. Maybe it's time to shed the finesse label and get down and dirty. It worked against the Bruins - it can work again.

Lots of positives about the sweep - but, coming up we will need to play all 4 Quarters ! Foul trouble must also be avoided !

And I should add, made the bucket! She did something that was correct she wanted, while defended, to find where the basket was. Most post up failures she has is she never really finds where the basket is and stalls thru putting the ball in the floor. In order to make the right move with your feet you need to know where you are pertaining to the basket, while protecting the ball. That’s what hurts all post shots. Kennedy and Taylor’s. They move before they see where they are pertaining to the defender and basket. It’s a guess for a post to move there feet before they know where the basket is. Talia is a good example of her skills are maximized because she makes sure she keeps her eyes on what’s happening on the floor. One man’s opinion.
