Recent D1 Baseball post (Rogers 6/14/2-21): LSU is closing in on its new head baseball coach, and the two names that keep coming up with my sources — Ole Miss head coach Mike Bianco and East Carolina head coach Cliff Godwin. Both would make total sense, and both have extensive history with the LSU program. To recap the past week, LSU had in-depth discussions with former Oregon State head coach Pat Casey, and he was the leading candidate. I’m certain of that. He also was in Baton Rouge the Thursday before NCAA Regionals began. Casey and LSU mutually ended things, with Casey staying put in Corvallis for family reasons. There also was plenty of outcry from LSU fans about the mere mention of Casey as a strong candidate. As for other candidates, multiple sources tell D1Baseball that as of today, Louisville coach Dan McDonnell is not a serious candidate for the job. Could that change? Sure, but as of today, that’s not the case. LSU, as with any big-time program, covets someone like Vanderbilt’s Tim Corbin, but he’s considered highly unlikely to leave the dynasty behind in Nashville. That leaves us with two very familiar candidates in Bianco and Godwin. I wouldn’t expect this search to go on much longer. I would be surprised at this point if Bianco isn’t offered. If it’s not him, all eyes go to Godwin.

You can believe what you want when it comes to Pat Casey and LSU, but I can tell you it was LSU that backed off of hiring Pat. What makes you so sure? His age? If so, then why entertain the notion from the beginning? Plus Casey is in top shape. Better than most any 30-40 year old. Maineiri did what…. Got one title. At LSU. Pat has 3… at Oregon State. Case won’t be coach at LSU….it’s not because of age or resume….lol |

The Luke stuff has nothing to do with why I wasn’t a fan of Pat coming to LSU. My reasoning is that I don’t like the idea of replacing a 63 yr old coach that is retiring because of health reasons with a 62 yr old coach that retired for health reasons 3 years ago. [br Casey retired because he was tired and his son is on the team. He has no health problems. Probably in the top 1% in his age group for health and fitness. He sweats all the details and lives and dies with every pitch so he can get run down. He simply the best in the business and in a 5 year window there are no young guys that would be better. Good health except for the stress he put on himself. He hated to lose and it ate him up inside. Stress can do a lot of things to people. Eventually with the stress he put on himself it would have led to health issues down the line. Whether at the time he was in good physical shape or not. |
