Have we learned nothing from this year? This year has been a travesty for everyone. At so many levels. Imagine going to college for the first time in your life as a big time recruit in any sport, expecting all of the experiences that go along with that and having it turn into a 1 year sentence in a dorm room at OSU with access to NOTHING. And you're 19. Away from home for the first time. You can't even jet home for the weekend to "get right" with your family. Think about it. That would be unbearable. This year is a mulligan. There is almost no way this conversation even happens without Covid. Want to be mad? Be mad at the virus. I HATE the fact that we lost both of these young players. They looked like the nucleus of something better in years to come. Yes, Savannah needed to improve. Who cares what her mom said? She's having just as hard a year as anyone else, and she's her mom. Of course she's biased. Both Goforth and Samuel were showing improvement throughout the season. Given a normal year they would probably have had even larger roles down the stretch of the season. This sucks. Period. Boo hoo. You think there aren’t millions of students out there in the same position that aren’t D1 athletes? You know, the ones that had to try and find jobs during a pandemic to pay their own way through college while being sequestered in a dorm room. That is a cop out excuse. Frankly, I think this might be a blessing for the program. I’d prefer to have players that are more mentally tough.

Portal is busy, but Rueck and staff are looking increasingly like they have accrued some recruiting misses. A transferring out player is not a lot different than a recruit not panning out. These were not misses. Samuel and Goforth clearly had Pac-12 talent. They signed in Nov., 2019, expecting one kind of OSU experience. Neither OSU nor the players anticipated Covid, which made that expected experience impossible. This is one problem associated with signing players from far, far outside our geographic area, which I consider to be the West Coast. They are a long way from home and this year did not have their usual support system, either from their families being able to visit, or from the team, whose activities were greatly restricted. The players gonna do what they're gonna do. It's their choice. Sometimes it's easier just easier to bail. Wish them luck, and move on. Waiting for the big shoe to drop at U of hole still but their situation was somewhat different in their freshmen knew one another pretty well in AAU ball so maybe that helped?

I figured a strong possibility of Savannah leaving after Sasha. With Covid Savannah had no ability to develop friendships with anyone other than her roomie, and now she's gone there's nothing keeping her here a looooong way from Atlanta.

Not awesome news that Savannah has decided to leave. Let's stay classy with our opinions. GO BEAVS!

I've heard of 'go big or go home', but I didn't know it meant for all the bigs to stay and the guards to go home.

No. I don't think there are MILLIONS of students out there that were 1000's of miles away from home at their respective school, without any physical contact with their families, but you make a fair point. I'm not trying to make excuses for it. It would probably have been a wiser long term choice for them both to gut it out, but WW2 and Vietnam notwithstanding, this was a tough year. Do I wish they were tougher and stuck it out? Sure. I think. I mean, if they don't want to be here, then it's probably better that we DO get players that want to be here. Just don't think it's a good look to be jumping on the comments of a former player's mom right now, or questioning the coaches for this. It is what it is.

Live with Mom and Dad and take online classes. D-I Athletes...and frankly all athletes, are the students that did get more screwed by COVID. They were sequestered in dorm rooms. Keeping barking at the night from your soap box Smails.

I will keep barking.
Thanks.
I’ll just have to figure out how the 15k students that were still on campus this year were all living with their parents.
And if the women’s bb team were so sequestered, how come I kept seeing them at the grocery store?
Oh and the current OSU students that are currently homeless and living in their cars because they lost their job during the pandemic. I guess we should just tell them at least they’re not D1 athletes with shelter, training tables and stipends. I’m sure that will make them feel better.

Covid shutdown for students was tough, but like Henry pointed out, there’s been much tougher times. Open up and move on. I also agree with folks that think this current generation isn’t very tough. Good luck hiring them for jobs that require hard labor and toughness. We haven’t had much success even paying very well to train. It’s different.

Well, I'm 2 generations removed from today's college athletes, but, even at the risk of sounding generational like my parents sounded to me, I've got to say I don't understand this (approximately) 800 D1 athletes entering the transfer portal.
Certainly this year was not what they dreamed of. Those who came to Oregon State didn't get the retreat at the coast, the regular pre-conference schedule, including the trip to Hawaii, the great experience of playing at Gill, or just normal college life. But that ain't OSU's fault, nor any of the other schools that had similar situations. It not like they were sold a bill of goods by these schools and then the schools reneged.
Anyway, back to the generational stuff. My parents would have told me to give it a fair chance, stick it out and see what happens in a normal year. I would have told the same to my kids, and I would hope they would do likewise with my grandchildren. But that's obviously not happening with a very significant number of these kids. This whole thing does not speak well of those who became parents around the turn of the century.
Understand, I'm not talking about any specific individuals. I know nothing of what might have been passed back and forth between Savannah and Sasha and their parents, so I'm not speculating on those situations. I am saying that, if there are 800 women in the transfer portal, an awful lot of the 800 mothers and 800 fathers involved in the decision have done a disservice to their daughters.
There's a lot to be said for giving a lot of things in life a fair chance to work out - choice of schools, marriage, jobs... Quitting at the first sign of adversity is not a key to a successful life.

Well, I was really looking forward to seeing how Savannah and Sasha developed in our system. After seeing Sasha play with the intensity she brought, and her Slocum-esque ability to get to the rim (but having the length to finish over people), I thought to myself "this is a player, who, on the right team, helps win a national championship". Savannah seemed to really be the sort of player who could surprise us with a "Kolbie leap" - suddenly put it all together and be a success story of the highest order..... But Covid has robbed the Beavers of some of the great recruiting/retaining advantages that might have kept these two in the fold - not being able to do all sorts of fun things with the team (I enjoyed pictures of the WBB team hamming it up at football, soccer and volleyball games, for example), and not running out onto the Gill floor with 6000+ fans going crazy, or not having the elementary school sellout game, or the tournament in Hawaii, or probably working summer camp........folks can rebut and point out that athletes really seem to be hitting the "reset" button via the transfer portal this year across the nation - but I believe those kinds of things might have kept this team together. Might have. Let the post-Covid-rebuild begin! (just getting to the post-Covid part of that statement will be a relief). But I too believe that these are body blows that aren't that easy for the program to recover from, and we might be at an inflection point that will take several recruiting cycles to recover from - because, like softball and volleyball, the Pac-12 is only growing by way of being the murderers row in WBB. Let's hope the next few news items regarding transfers are players transferring IN!
Go Beavers!

We just went 0 for on two out of the last three recruiting classes in the long term. We all realize this is not a recipe for success and is unsustainable. (Especially with the penchant for this staff to recruit small classes).
On the bright side they are not back to back years. Plus Taylor, Kennedy and Jelena form a solid core. TVO is the real deal and I'm hoping Greta can be an immediate contributor.
The down side is having no luxury to develop players, as any new additions need to be in "play now" mode. Even a highly successful transfer like Mack took several games to find a footing, where Subasic never substantially contributed.
We need to do better than a 50% success rate in the portal this coming off season. Scott and company need to find instant contributors. It's not going to be easy. but the transfers of Morris, Simmons, Faustino, Goforth and Samuel have forced the coaches hands. I hope they are up to the task.
Let's hope they find lightning in a bottle and win big within the portal!

In a “normal” year there must be hundreds of players who elect not to transfer simply because of losing a whole year sitting on the bench, not playing the game they love because of redshirt rules. This year it’s a freebie. Makes it easy and without penalty to second guess themselves on their original choice.

It’s terrible how these player decisions inconvenience us fans. It’s almost as if they didn’t consider my feelings at all.
I’m not sure if I can ever forgive them.
