And those comments were? Maybe recruiting has to deal with more than just physical talent? Don’t say it is COVID or distance from home being an issue. Her mother was mad about playing time and took offense to Rueck calling Savannah’s offense “developmental.” That made it pretty clear to me. Her exact comments: “I would never describe Savannah’s offense as developmental and neither would a lot of other people. The way he uses that term is so offensive. Isn’t everyone’s game still developing? She is a SHOOTING GUARD. That’s literally what her position is called and what she is good at. She shot 45% from the 3 as a senior in HS less than a year ago. Shooters shoot. She came out of the exact same AAU circuit as other players, her team won that championship. She was a major part of that. She knows how to shoot, otherwise she would have played post. she was right there with everyone else on the team at the beginning of the season. Remember when everyone was struggling but they just needed more games? Same, for Savannah.” LOL. Helicopter parents are the worst. Offended by a coaches plain and simple comments. Hey Savannah's mom: The Pac12 isn't HS so she's gonna have to work and develop to be better. Oh and why are you denigrating the shooting ability of post players? How OFFENSIVE!

Ironically, it didn’t seem Samuel had a “shooters gonna shoot” mentality at all - I wanted her to be more aggressive. Another tough loss, lots of upside with her physical gifts - was no to have a guard with top-tier quicks, not very typical for Rueck recruits.
Portal is busy, but Rueck and staff are looking increasingly like they have accrued some recruiting misses. A transferring out player is not a lot different than a recruit not panning out. At least the scholarship frees up in this case, but that’s of little value unless it gets filled by Pac-12 caliber talent. Faustino indicated a bad situation last year, and we will soon see how dire the staff sees the situation based on who we do or don’t bring in soon.

These were not misses. Samuel and Goforth clearly had Pac-12 talent. They signed in Nov., 2019, expecting one kind of OSU experience. Neither OSU nor the players anticipated Covid, which made that expected experience impossible.
This is one problem associated with signing players from far, far outside our geographic area, which I consider to be the West Coast. They are a long way from home and this year did not have their usual support system, either from their families being able to visit, or from the team, whose activities were greatly restricted.
The players gonna do what they're gonna do. It's their choice. Sometimes it's easier just easier to bail. Wish them luck, and move on.

I am glad some folks here are "excited" about losing really good players and the propects for replacing them. I'm not so optimistic. In fact, I'm pessimistic. I would be shocked if Rueck and Co. can replace Samuel and Goforth with 2 players anywhere near as good.
So Samuel leaves because of a lack of playing time...but wasn't this about to change drastically with Goodman, Simons, and Goforth leaving? Unless OSU gets someone from the portal who is Pac-12 good and ready to play, Samuel would have been 1 of just 3 scholarship guards on the roster next season (TVO, Kampschroder, and her). Doesn't make much sense to me to leave just when PT would/will surely open up.

OK, so who is next up to leave? Brown? Jones? TVO? Yeah, more losses means we can be even more excited about the future of OSU WBB. Go Beavs!

At higher levels you have to guard better players which, if you work on defense, can effect your offensive ability. Maybe mom didn't take that into consideration.

Maybe Rueck's offensive tempo and style weren't good fits for Goforth and Samuel? Goforth at Arkansas is a completely different style and tempo of play.

She was a relatively late addition who was identified after we missed on our higher targets - Van Lith, Clark, Bueckers, Daniels. No one was “excited” about losing Sasha.

Wow, that would have made it real awkward for Savannah in front of the coaches, other players, etc. Her mom must have really pressured her to make the change. I don't think she was that unhappy but her mother gave her little choice!

Have we learned nothing from this year? This year has been a travesty for everyone. At so many levels. Imagine going to college for the first time in your life as a big time recruit in any sport, expecting all of the experiences that go along with that and having it turn into a 1 year sentence in a dorm room at OSU with access to NOTHING. And you're 19. Away from home for the first time. You can't even jet home for the weekend to "get right" with your family. Think about it. That would be unbearable.
This year is a mulligan. There is almost no way this conversation even happens without Covid. Want to be mad? Be mad at the virus. I HATE the fact that we lost both of these young players. They looked like the nucleus of something better in years to come. Yes, Savannah needed to improve. Who cares what her mom said? She's having just as hard a year as anyone else, and she's her mom. Of course she's biased.
Both Goforth and Samuel were showing improvement throughout the season. Given a normal year they would probably have had even larger roles down the stretch of the season. This sucks. Period.

Yeah, it sucks. OTOH, my dad's freshman year at college was interrupted by a little thing called WWII. At 18, he was with the 7th Army slogging through France, Germany and Austria. My freshman year, a little kerfuffle called the Vietnam War had not yet concluded.
Covid is an inconvenience, certainly, much less scary if you're young than if you're an old goat like me. But there have been, and will be again, tougher things to face in life.
