If some of you in this thread are right about the recruits shying away from OSU because of the lack of clarity regarding the conference, doesn't that imply that they would not be interested unless the Beavers were at least still in the Pac-12 or another power conference? If they had no reason to think that OSU might be in the MWC in whatever form or title, why would they dismiss joining the Beavers? There are some on this board who are pushing the idea of OSU and WSU joining with the MWC as the new Pac while dismissing the notion that it would have any real effect on recruiting. Maybe we're seeing some early results that point to what will really happen. And, maybe it's due to back to back bottom tier finishes, and transfers out even with back to back top rated classes?? Making such unfounded conclusions that have no way to be proven is ridiculous. Recruiting issues or successes are never about a single issue.

I think it's safe to assume that a top 100 recruit who has their pick of top 25 schools, is unlikely to commit to Oregon State right now given the situation we're in. And if the Beavs do end up in the MWC, there is no question that it will make it much harder to land high profile recruits. Doesn't mean the team can't be great, in fact it could be even better. I'm not convinced that the rankings are the end all to building a great roster. Coach Smith and WSU have proven that in football. There are a lot of great players out there that aren't highly ranked. Give me a roster full of skilled athletes that are hungry and want to work over everyday and I think we'll be successful.

Stars aren't the only banswer to success.

First of all, I said " Maybe we're seeing some early results..." I am speculating, not coming to an "unfounded conclusion." Secondly, while I agree that recruiting issues or successes are (almost always not) about a single issue, this issue is astronomically bigger than any other that OSU has faced. IMO it makes sense that players look at a program that is not far removed from a high level of success and one that is a member of arguably the best women's basketball conference in the country would be interested in playing for said program. But you take away the second part and not only that but drop said program into some new form of the MWC and (again, my opinion, but also a highly logical one) most of them will start looking elsewhere. I think that of the OSU athletic programs, women's basketball stands to take the biggest step back if OSU winds up in the new Pac with all or most of the MWC. I think Rueck most likely will stay but he just won't be able to land the same level of players. Not even close. It's interesting to me how you try to reconcile your wish for OSU to join with the MWC with the reality that most DI athletes want to stay in a power conference or play in one if they are a highly regarded recruit. Especially in this case because you seem to be a big fan of OSU wbb.

And, it's funny how you try to reconcile what you "think" others' wishes are. My wish was for none of this to happen. As of now the MWC merger in some shape or form SEEMS to be the most viable option. You seem to make up reality. Reality, WBB at OSU has fallen about as low as you can the last two seasons. Reality, NIL and the lack thereof in a P5 confetence will have more effect in the future than being in the MWC. And, there are several layers of what some consider "highly regarded". What type of classes overall were the most successful in SR's time here? SR will still attract quality players. Will it be the 5* player(s) that rating crazed fan is all about? Who cares! There are a lot of high quality players to go around. There doesn't need to be 4 & 5 stars attached to their names by services that have only seen highlight reels. Add, the portal is so active because young players sometimes confuse choosing a program/level with fit and PT. Reality, there is zero proof that any of the elite players were highly interested in OSU and then suddenly dropped that because of the Pac12 breakup. I'll add, "biggest step back", in what way? You site only recruiting. So are you're talking the * factor? I mean WBB would be funded, SR knows who fits his system, and I'm guessing WBB is probably top 1-3 every year in the MWC. It's the entire AD takes a huge step back... financially. Football being the huge money maker, in your current take on reality would thus be the biggest loser by far... $ and recruits.

Yes, Rueck has built his teams in the last 10 years by bringing in key 4 and 5-star players as the foundation. This is a common misconception among some on this board. There is NO WAY the Beavers have the success they had without nearly all of the following players: In 2013 to 2015 he had Jamie Weisner (4 star), Sydney Wiese (ranked No. 56 overall in nation) and Sam Seigner (4 star), along with Gabby Hansen (No. 28 wing). In 2015, he brought in 5-star Katie McWilliams (No. 40 overall nationally). In 2016, he brought in 5-star Mikayla Pivec (No. 24 overall nationally) and 4-star Kat Tudor (No. 42 nationally). In 2017, he brought in 4-star Aleah Goodman and 5-star transfer Destiny Slocum (McDonald's AA, No. 7 overall). In 2019, he brought in 5-star Kennedy Brown and 4-star Taylor Jones and both eventually transferred. In 2020, he brought in 4-star Sasha Goforth (transferred) and 4-star TVO (No. 25 overall). In 2021, he brought in 4-star Greta Kampschroeder (No. 32, transferred) and 4-star transfer AJ Marotte. In 2022, he brought in 5-star (No. 6 overall) Timea Gardner and 5-star (No. 10 overall) Raegan Beers. In 2023, he brought in 4-star Donovyn Hunter. Most of the rankings are taken from ESPN. He was able to hit on foreign players Marie Gulich and Ruth Hamblin and 3-stars such as Deven Hunter and Taya Corosdale.

IMO I’d say recruiting has definitely dropped off prior to the implosion of the Pac-12. Obviously 2022 was a phenomenal class, but we weren’t drawing much interest from 2023 recruits (there was a rather small pool for OSU, though) and the 2024 class was pretty rough. We got a lot of kids on campus early, offered a lot of kids, but very few of them seemed to have legit interest in OSU. I think this was heavily fueled by missing the tournament.
Winning games and making the NCAA tournament is going to be important for recruiting (especially the 2025 class), but it’s hard to see OSU landing top-50 kids with there being so much uncertainty in regards to what conference we’ll land in. In WBB, schools like Gonzaga, which make the tournament every year, still have trouble landing top-100 recruits simply because of conference affiliation.
Rueck will need to have some really solid evals in the 75-125+ range in the future of OSU wants to get back to competing at a high level.

So, just how many Top 50 kids do you think SR has landed that it will diminish so badly? I do not search recruiting sites, but I can recall maybe (8) total over the last 6 seasons counting the 2023 class. Of those I can recall only three stayed put... TVO, TG, & RB (so far). There are plenty of non P5 WBB teams that litter the top 25-50 teams. They also litter the top NCAA RPI teams all without landing what fans think are classes that lead to automatic success. The recruiting drop off is more that other Pac12 teams have passed OSU in being viable sources for PT and success. And, that was long before any of the conference mess. WSU, Utah, Colorado, Arizona, SC, and now seemingly UW have improved in all facets of their programs. OSU has added some "name" classes in the past few years, but the program has fallen behind despite that. As far as Gonzaga... (yes, family ties) perfect example of landing a few top 100's every few years and being in the NCAA consistently. I believe 2015-16 is the last time they did not win 23+ games. Only the 4th time that has happened since 2002-03 when Graves got the them rolling... 18, 18, 28, 16, 24, 25, 27, 29, 31, 28, 27, 29... Fortier takes over... 26, 19, 26, 27, 29, 28, 23, 27, 28 1st or 2nd in the WCC for 20 of those years... NCAA 13 of last 15 years. Weaker conference? Yep, but play solid NC schedules. In fact compare their '23-24 with OSU's!! No idea if a "merger" will happen, but OSU WBB could easily be the Zags of that conference and NOT have to land the lauded big name recruits all seem so enamored with.

I would argue that recruiting really hasn't dropped off at all. Rueck just brought in Gardiner and Beers, both 5 stars and top 10 in the ESPN rankings, along with Blacklock, who got a high 3-star ranking from one service that implied that it most likely would have been a 4 if she hadn't been injured as a junior. I didn't look up Hansford. Rueck has been very consistent in his recruiting in the past decade. He brings in one or two 4-5 star players pretty regularly (note the list I made in a previous post) and fills in around them with foreign players, some 3-star players and even some overlooked ones. It is a system that has worked pretty well until covid hit and eventually resulted in transfers of Brown and Jones. Add Sasha Goforth and her story to the mix as well as Andrea Aquino not being able to play and those are pretty major setbacks in the matter of a couple of years. But not related to Rueck's recruiting (which I think has been stellar). But that was all while the program was in the Pac-12.

I think Dominika is a hidden gem. And I am very high on our HS recruits this year from our state of Oregon. Our recruits from last season are top notch. Adlee, Raegan, Timea, Lily, and Martha are all going to be contributors this season. I just hope they all stay with OSU going forward. I'm very excited about Dom's upside.

I (LOL) was simply pointing out a few that you overlooked (LOL).
I made no comment either way about any opinions expressed in any post on this thread.

Since landing Pivec, Rueck has pretty consistently landed at least one (occasionally two) top-40 or so recruits. OSU has probably been fourth or so in the Pac-12 in recruiting in that soan behind Stanford, Oregon, and UCLA (plus Arizona has come on strong in recent years). Hard to see OSU maintaining that if they end up in the MWC. It really all depends on what rankings you look at (for example, if you look at CGBR, which has Hunter in the top-25, you’d say 2023 was a pretty typical OSU class), but I feel like there’s been a bit of a drop off in terms of interest in these past two classes. I think turning into a Gonzaga-type program if OSU does move into the MWC would be the best hope for the program.
