A few other videos of her:
That's her 1:1 win that was referenced. Watching that, you get some Destiny vibes with her affinity for one-handed scoops. But watching other videos, I don't see a lot of similarities.
Here's a full game video: (#11 Green)
It's not one of her better games, but you can see aspects of her game:
- She's basically the PG, but she's used periodically at the high post.
- She doesn't look quick, but still blows by people at will. Her cross-over/around the back in particular seems hard for defenders to pick up.
- She can create her own shot, and does a lot of it.
- She likes the long baseball pass, and seems quite accurate with it.
- She knows where her teammates are, which she finds with some passing that seems ill-advised in the moment but is quite effective - she'll penetrate and go up in the air with a place to go in mind the whole time. This is a true PG quality of keeping a visual map of the other 9 players.
- She keeps her head up very consistently and has good handles. She doesn't look particularly quick at all, yet defenders hardly challenge her. You see why in the middle of the 4th quarter ... Pasco puts their most aggressive defender on her to try and create turnovers/get the ball out of her hands, and she promptly fouls that player out with her ball-handlng and using her body to protect the ball. She has the handles and body size to make it very difficult to pick her pocket, at this level anyway. I don't know if that will translate to the Pac-12 vs. a very fast UCLA defender, but she's definitely not an easy player to pick-pocket.
- She has the green light in Aleah range - doesn't connect from there much in this game, but she's very confident.
- She has work to do defensively though to defend Pac-12 guards, as she doesn't show much lateral quickness. Her defense is smart, just doesn't look particularly interested in it (or effective for that matter).
Definitely an interesting player. She's not a slam-dunk to be a Pac-12 PG in my view, but if she is, she'll be a fun type of PG to watch. The way she handles the ball reminds me of how James Harden just doesn't look very quick or athletic vs. his defenders, but between his strength, body control and handles, nobody really effectively can defend him. In my orange-tinted imagination, that's how Talia is able to evolve into our next great PG! Regardless, she definitely shows really good vision and delivery of passes in the right spots, which will fit very nicely in Rueck's system no matter where she plays.
