This is our freshman post in her 6th college game, taking it one on one against one of the best centers in NCAAWBB. And finishing through contact.
How good is she going to be?

Kennedy is a work in progress on the offensive end, but man can the kid play some defense. We held Mompremier to 13 points on 6-16 FG and 7 rebounds. That is a pretty big win in my books. She and Hebard are the best two posts we'll see. Seems like the issue is just that her shot is really flat, which leaves little room for error on her threes and she back rims a lot. I wonder if they will try to change her release a bit between seasons.

The 3 ball isn’t there for sure...3-18 thus far on the season. I know she wants to be a face up “3” offensively, but I’d like to see her utilize her height as more of a Lauren Cox-type “4”. It seems this team has plenty of strength on the 3 pt line as is. That said, she’s playing really solid on the D side of the ball and I think she’ll find her niche offensively by conference time. Great road win for the team!

I didn't see the game, so obviously didn't see Kennedy play, but Coach Rueck really praised Kennedy's defensive game in the post-game show.... It was more than a rah-rah kind of thing. Coach really praised the technical aspects of her defensive game, her toughness, and her physical intensity... Great to hear.
Kennedy's offensive game has not been impressive thus far in the season. Her shot is not dropping and her FT shooting is also off to a bad start... But, as near as I can tell, everyone seems to agree that with her the offensive side of things is just a matter of time....She's got the ingredients to be a scorer and in time she will be.
We're only 6 games into the season, but it looks very much to me like the Beavs have the two most impressive Rookies in the Pac..... GO BEAVS !!

In interviews her last couple years in high school she commented how much she loves playing defense. Nothing is better than messing up her opponents game especially blocks. She made me think of Gabby and she is showing that kind of potential.

First I have to give Mattie a lot of props. I usually am not a big fan of tweeners, but her body made a difference against their big center. Scott also figured out that Brown plays better against that type of center that is a tough defensive matchup for Taylor. I remember the Jordan Classic All-Star Game, where they put Kennedy on Angel Jackson to close out the first half after Angel had scored 3 straight baskets against her defenders. Kennedy had been playing the wing, but switched to Angel and shut her down the rest of the half. Basketball is all about matchups and the good thing is that the Beaves have a variety of players to take advantage of that fact.
I can not believe the officiating in this game. Teams of officials usually emphasize different calls. They certainly were tight on the traveling calls. But they let Miami hammer the beaves while stealing the ball. You are not supposed to be able to knock the ball handler off balance while going for the steal. The certainly anticipated a foul on Kat that never happened on that break. She also made no contact on the next foul as well. Fortunately, it was not a close enough game so that those calls made a difference. Well, at least Miami got called for more traveling calls to make up for the other bad calls against the beaves.

Kennedy Brown was brilliant today. I see why she is an AA and Kansas Player of the Year. Such composure, and the game is not too big for her. Her defense, and, the help she provides breaking the press was fantastic today. Kennedy's defense has been solid all year. Rueck finally recognized that Kennedy should be defending Beatrice M., and what an amazing defensive day she had. I sure hope her shot comes around. If it does, Kennedy will be Freshman of the Year in the PAC-12.
I thought OSU's guards played great defense all day, and, I love it when Rueck brings out the zone defense in the 2nd half. It always messes with the other team.

FWIW
Very short bench for the Beavs @ Miami. Only Kat and Maddie played meaningful minutes. Jazz got in for a couple minutes and registered one foul on her stat line. No minutes at all for Janessa, Patricia or Noelle.
We'll probably see that change against Liberty U (1-5).

The good thing is we still have a quality 4/5 off the bench as well as a really good 3. The fact that we start three players who can play PG makes us very versatile. Jazz didn't look very confident in her minutes. She looks like all she wants to do is get rid of the ball. She better be ready if Slocum is gone next year.

sewingbeaver - - I wasn't as clear as I should have been....Rueck's comments about Kennedy that I referred were delivered in the post-game interview with Ron Callan on the radio.... Not in a traditional televised post-game presser.... GO BEAVS !!

Could break down the team and individual performances bit by bit, but I am just going to grab the entire bunch of bananas and say this was an NCAA RPI busting top 4 performance by a team that is still not as good as it will be by March madness. There is impressive and then there is women's college basketball in the state of Oregon. Go Beavs!

Banks not very happy with her team. Love how well Rueck is consistently able to frustrate teams with taking away strengths. I suspect he has taken a few early game individual explosions a bit personal.
Miami is supposed to have very good guard play along with their skilled big, and nothing went well.
