That’s why Casey get’s paid the big bucks. Between him and Yeskie, they know the staff and the situation better than anyone. However, my own preference is to not start a freshman in such a big spot. Every one of these games is critical, and baseball can turn very ugly, very quickly. Looking back at last weekend, I would give Tweedt 2-3 innings and see what kind of a lead we can build, then, let him run until the very first sign of trouble ( ANY free passes or HBP, or hard hit outs ), then run in a seasoned reliever.. like Eisert, with the same type of leash. We ABSOLUTELY need ‘Dancing Kwan’, Magical Madrigal, Adley Clutchman, Road Gradin’ Caydin, and Clever Trevor, to be stroking the ball...Right up to the big dog pile ! Go Beavers, Love this time of year... thanks to Casey, Bailey, Yeskie and all coaches and players for another run... Amazing, a truly elite program, recognized as such all over the US..

I am really liking how Able has been performing - for the most part he has been able to give us 4 solid innings each start in the last month, which gets us into Tweedt, Eisert and Mulholland time. I love these discussions - feel like I am sitting at a chess board practicing moves and Bobby Fischer (Yesky/Casey et al) is going to sit down there in a bit and I know every thing I have practiced will probably go flying out the window, but at least I am at the board! And it is really nice to be able to mention Sam's name in the mix again As for hitting, I am expecting the top 5 of our lineup to be totally different at the plate than this last week. Even LSU isn't UCLA pitching, and the guys will have been working on what they need to. Besides, nobody (cept maybe the Beavs), has quite the defense that UCLA had; we hit a lot of balls on the nose that only a great defense could make outs on, and UCLA was that defense. As for being paired up to potentially face off against Stanford again in a SR - I recall having to face down the vaunted USC squad to get to Omaha - bring on whomever if we get out of the regional, bring em on. And we will get out of the regional!

baseba1111: It does matter, a great deal, that LSU has actually hit against Bryce twice in the last 12 months. Actually having success in a real game vs watching video of Bryce makes a HUGE difference (for LSU, and, even Bryce). Someone pointed out that since the LSU game will end before Casey has to make a final decision is great for us. If one time success was so key every pitcher in MLB would have little chance of a long career, Bryce would be toast against Furd, Zona, and UCLA in year 3 of his Pac12 career. As for LSU... -most of this team did not see Bryce in person (best I can tell is that returners this year were 3-14 vs Bryce in two games)... -everyone has tape... -Bryce dominated a much better LSU offense when he was on regular rest (and, most, me included, wondered why PC went with him the loser out game vs starting Drew... BUT, probably based on just that... his 1st game domination)... -Bryce gave up 4 earned while we eked out 3 hits and 4 total base runners (LOB), so no pitcher was winning that day, not even Luke... -Bryce gave up 5 ER on 6 hits in 10.1 IP vs a top tier team with 4ER and 4 hits came on shortened rest... any offense in either game (3-1 and 6-1 losses) we're not having this discussion. If a coaching staff is "afraid" to throw your 9-1 #2 starter vs anyone, they are not an Omaha team... PC will make the call... but, having the Abel/"staff" responsible for game 1 of a regional is a huge risk and one a coach would 2nd guess himself for the rest of his life it it went badly (coaches already have enough to 2nd guess themselves about!). You go with #1 or #2, then the other in game 2, and go from there... To me, as I've said, to pitch Luke early and hopefully short innings allows him to be available if needed later. But, no matter the choices made if the Beavers don't advance it was the wrong one... cuz we all know sports are highly predictable!

My input, for what it's worth...
Some folks around here have short memories. I can recall some VERY tight Friday regional games against #4 seeds when we've hosted in the past. And I'm pretty sure we had tight games against the #4 during both of our runs in 2006 and 2007, and were very thankful to have Buck or Stutes on the mound in those years. Maybe shiznit can pull up some old scores to refresh our memories.
Here's what I've learned from past regionals: EVERY team in the playoff's has a knockout Friday night guy. EVERY ONE. After that first game, the #4 team is almost always very little threat. But we will get their best, most experienced guy on the mound in that first game, and all it takes is for him to be a little bit better than usual, and for us to be a little bit worse than usual, and our worst nightmare comes true.
If I'm the manager, I start Luke, with an internal goal of 4 innings. If we're in control of the game at that point, with a 4-5 run lead, then I consider going to the pen and having him available for a bit of relief in games 4 or 5 if necessary. But if not, and the game is tight, then I know I've given my team the best chance to win that day. And that tops EVERYTHING else...
I'm confident that Bryce will do great on Saturday, no matter who we play. He has really been on fire lately...you guys do know he's allowed exactly 3 earned runs in his last 4 starts, right?? So LSU faced him last year...so what? So did every other team in the Pac, and he still dominated them. Don't let the Tigers get in your head; they're a good team, but they're not magical or anything. We've faced better than them many times this season and came out on top. And Fehmel is up to the job...
GO BEAVS!

If all you want to do is save your #1 starter for an inning or two in a possible game 4 or 5, there's no reason to sit him after 4 innings. Luke has pitched in relief on short rest before.

Winning Friday (heck, Saturday as well) is critical. You gotta go your #1 and #2 arms here. you have to, pick your matchups, but it has to be your best arms.
Because if you lose, you are playing a double header on Sunday and an extra game. No matter what, if you come back from losing, your first championship game is your 4th game, not your 3rd. You are on arm #4 no matter what. That is not where you want to be with it all on the line. With our thin starter pool, we have to be in the driver's seat on Sunday.
I fully get the desire to make Bryce miss LSU. I think that is reasonable strategy. I am okay starting him Friday and playing Luke against the presumably harder foe Saturday. But I just can't see you going 3rd starter spot on day one. the day EVERYBODY is most amped, the day that #4 seed is looking to knock off a giant.

For what it is worth it would be huge mistake for us or LSU to take the first games lightly. I think LSU is for in a very rude awakening Fri. Afternoon. Which means most likely whoever they play Sat. get Hess. His record is soo-soo he walks a few but K's a lot. Whatever we need that first game. I think a reasonable gamble is to use Abel or Gambrell game 1 as long as they don't allow 2 on base in any inning. That is when we use Luke. Hope the Starter can go 4 to 6 while we build a decent lead. We might get away using the BP and saving Luke. Just trying a way to use Luke more that 1 game. But then....what the hell do I know. Go Beav's Beat em all!

I think NW St is legit. I don’t care about RPI. That’s a joke. RPI ain’t playing the game. We haven’t exactly blown out 4 seeds historically. And my initial impression is the Devils are Every bit as good or better than any that have been here.
I certainly would not start Abel, Gambrell, Burns, Chamberlain, etc. not game 1. Gotta get game 1 to play at night game 2.
I can see starting Bryce. Maybe. Or starting Luke and if we’re able limiting his pitches for later use if necessary. Anybody else. No way.
