Tinkle mentioned post-game that they had shortened the rotation for this game. Nothing nefarious going on?

Tres with 7 tos, most unforced... looked absolutely lost on D... looked lost most of the game in the paint vs a smaller team. Stevie was as bad as Tres on D at times, forced his offense, could hit a thing when wide open. But, Hollins can't get a minute? Great game for Big G to get tons of minutes and try going big since Tres couldn't figure out how to execute a hi/low pass... but... 3 games in we're shortening the rotation? Ya...

Shortening the rotation... AND giving minutes to Stacey. No thanks!

As strange as it seems, I think Stacey played well and even scored, even though I was yelling "don't shoot".

I am willing to give Tres the benefit of an off game. He is still the best player on this team, a baller and a fighter. Stevie? well... That there is an issue. Our inside defense is pretty great. our inside game in general is pretty great. Our perimeter defense AND shooting is spotty at best. It comes down to the top guard play. our so called PG and SGs. The issue on this team is clear, the recipe to go at OSU is clear. take your open jumper. we are allowing teams to do it, and we have a couple principle figures allowing it.

Tinkle said explicitly in the press conference why he played Stacy. He wanted Ronnie's physical strength, because Jaquori was getting rubbed off on screens.
As for Hollins and Reichle, I think I'd worry if we had won by 20 and they still didn't play. WT wasn't in the mood for taking chances and experimenting much. He wanted to see his starting five play together for an extended period against a decent team. Hell, he barely played Big G.

I was surprised to see Hollins get no minutes, but in retrospect I don't have a problem with it. After last year's debacle and a bad loss to Wyoming, I think WT felt -- and I agree -- they could not afford to lose to LB St. Being 1-2 heading into our toughest match-up so far against St. John's was not the way he wanted to start the season. So he went with the veterans. Veterans certainly had their problems -- most notably Tres's turnovers and Stevie's terrible 3-pt shooting -- but they did get the win. And I did see some good things in the game. Eubanks was a stud all night and I loved his 8 for 8 from the line. When Tres wasn't turning over the ball, he shot well. Stevie looked good going to the hoop (hit 6 of 9 from two). He needs to take it upon himself to start limiting his 3s until he starts shooting better. I thought Ethan played pretty well overall. Heck even Stacy had a nice drive and a beautiful no look dump down to Berger I think it was. Then there is McLaughlin. It looked like he started out wanting to be more aggressive, but kept driving in too deep with no plan. On the plus side, he did lead the team in steals. Overall I thought the defense was improved, but more so in the first half then the second. I think Long Beach only made 3 three pointers in the first half. They definitely got hot in the second half -- I think they were 6 of 11 from 3, but I did think that the Beavs showed better recognition on who the three-point threats were and stayed with them better than they did against Wyoming. The Finnish player and Alberts just got hot.
I think WT will try to go with a shortened rotation against St. John's too. They're a guard oriented team -- top 2 scorers are guards. Lovett I'm a little bit familiar with as he's from Illinois and is a good scorer. Will definitely be a tough match-up. They're not big (6-7, 6-5, and 6-5 is their starting front court), but they are athletic. I think we can win it, but not if we have the same kind of unforced TOs that we had against LB St. If we lose, it looks like we'll play LB St. again (assuming they lose to Missouri). I think we'll see more of Hollins and others as the season moves on -- likely as early as second game in the tourney.

Coaches kids or not, they combined for 45 points, shot better than 50 percent (16-31) combined, had 12 rebounds, 11 assists and four steals. Stevie isn't shooting well from 3-point land but he hit some big drives down the stretch.
THey're playing because they're some of our best players. Our subs don't give us that kind of offensive production.
Wyoming plays South Dakota State tonight. SDSU has been a solid program, with NCAA appearances. Interesting to see how Wyoming does tonight. I suspect that loss, while disappointing, will look better as the season progresses. I think UW will be much better than 7th in the Mountain West.

And, our starters got run down gave up 50 2nd half points and had over a dozen unforced tos... 10 from the coaches kids, Tres with 7. These games may be about some wins, but they should be to develop our non-existent depth. The only season that truly counts is the Pac12 season. If WT can't "take the chance" to play his bench vs LBSt he's not only are not developing the team/bench, he's risking over playing players he can't risk getting hurt or run down. Manuel has proven he's a higher percentage shooter... 17 min/game. Big G only 8 min/game and had shown much better control. Hollins 9 min/game shooting 75% in limited attempts. Berger 6 min/game. Drew is not going to out man any Pac12 team. Berger and Big G need minutes to be able to contribute later. Stevie has been a below 40% shooter for his career and a poor defender. Several of his late drives were forced and basically poor shots that found their way in. Hollins and Zach need as many minutes as possible. JM is not only a poor defender at his position, he has a bad shot with slow release. Again PT for others at the PG position is essential. Tres may be our best player, but that is a scary proposition. I don't remember him being so bad on D. Vs the top 6 or so Pac12 teams I'm not sure who at his position he can guard without foul trouble. Again depth needed meaning PT to develop is essential. We supposedly have more depth. If you are shortening the rotation really doesn't help the players, nor the team when they are truly needed. As far as the offensive output, is it outweighing their D? Maybe less would be more! Just not liking the early season vibe of developing a team headed to a postseason berth.

I understand, and agree to a point. But sometimes you have to win the game. And we have almost a week before our next game.
SR did the same thing yesterday; Goodman didn't play, Carosdale and Thropay saw minimal time (I liked what Thropay did). The previous game, a blowout against an overmatched team, they got big minutes.
That's why I don't get too bent out of shape about an easy OOC schedule. You have to have opportunities to develop your bench players. Unfortunately these last two, and next three, games don't give us much of an opportunity to do that.
