You're a good fan, BBfan...but....I've heard this SOOO many times before. I've become a real cynic regarding men's hoops and football. I hate it, but I'm being totally honest. The "give-a-s%#t" just isn't there at an INSTITUTIONAL level. That isn't the ONLY level, but it's a BAD place to start. I'll quit while I'm behind...
NIT for sure means finishing 6-9 range, that isn't asking a lot. 18 months ago this team was in the Big Dance, they haven't been in some big drought like football is
LOL... one tourney in 27 years is sort of a drought! Think we've been to more bowls than that over the same span!!!

I'll go on record as predicting this: 11-1 in non-conference, 10-8 in conference, 1-1 in the tournament. That makes us 22-10 and an NCAA team. I see wins over UT/CO, @cal/S, UW/WSU(2), plus a couple upset home wins from among UCLA/USC, UA/ASU, and Oregon. But, of course, I could be wrong. But, of course, you could be right. I vote for right. The overall attitude of the team will be the difference for this year. When you're getting thumped every game, you get down. You might think you're giving it all you got, but you're not. You see no light at the end of the tunnel. This year the light will be huge. They won't be running up and down the court, they'll be gliding. Spring won't be in the air but, they will have spring in their tail. And that's the way the Pickle Squirts. ( Ralph said that ) [ Make no mistake, you have to have talent to win - especially in a Power 5 D-1 program. Grit and will, unity and effort can mask a lot of short-comings, but in the end, you have to have talent just to get to the Dance. Our roster right now includes several kids who competed and excelled against the best talent in the west before they arrived here. Very few kids are elite and can't miss, and schools that secure those typically "one and done" wonders are competing for national titles. Most tourney teams are lucky to have more than one elite kid, and while I feel that we could have a couple of players with potential to be VERY good, and several others who are solid D1 players, nobody in Corvallis is elite. I love what you said about the impact of attitude, because it is vital. Cinderella at the Dance always seems to be a team with great coaching, solid competitors, mature leaders and remarkable chemistry. Their commitment to each other and belief in what they're doing translates to insane effort that won't allow them to sulk or quit or throw each other under the bus in adversity. OSU basketball has blessed us through the years with guys like Blume, Sitton, Connor, AC, GP and GP2 (to name just a few of our most tenacious leaders). Those guys would die before they quit, and imposed their will on everyone around them. I don't know if we have any leaders on that level - with both the skill and the leadership and tenacity to match - but if this team can find that, it will make a world of difference. When you have that attitude coming from the top down in your leadership, the ceiling really gets raised. Conversely, if you don't have it, it can really be tough to weather inevitable storms and stay focused, regardless of the talent level.

100% agree. This season will REALLY show us what kind of coaching staff we have. The talent is very good, not great/elite. But certainly good enough to at least compete for a tourney slot. Barring any major injuries (lol after last year), there's no reason not to compete for a spot in the big dance...if the coaching and disciple are there imho

No one has been arrested from Oregon State so we can't have the best players, but I expect a solid squad that ought to finish above .500 in the Pac.

No one has been arrested from Oregon State so we can't have the best players, but I expect a solid squad that ought to finish above .500 in the Pac. Even with major defections the Pac12 is very, very talented. Without orange goggles OSU is in the bottom half talent wise. The injuries, coaching/coachabilty, and breaks will decide whether we can jump into the 4-6 range in league play. I fully expect a top 6 finish and at least a NIT berth. I think that is a reasonable starting point and hopefully go from there.
