I would be very surprised if Casey leaves OSU. He'd retire before leaving for a new (baseball) gig.

Jack Anderson (and Beaver Nation) is very thankful that you aren't the coach... And besides, redshirts don't take up any space. You either make the team, or you don't. If somebody doesn't make the 35-man cut but comes back next year and is one of the 35 people who can best help your team, then welcome aboard. You missed my point. I'm saying that red shirting a player doesn't help the team in that, if they turn out to be very good, we will only have them for two years, not three [They will leave as Juniors]. So ... I'd rather cut loose someone taking up space and not red shirt anyone. And I don't -- and neither should you -- presume to speak for Beaver Nation. My point was that Jack Anderson redshirted his freshman year in 2013 when he didn't make the cut, and came back and is now a big fan favorite (certainly mine). He doesn't have big pro prospects, but I for one am excited to have him back next year. If you're not good enough to be on the active roster your freshman year, chance are you're not going to go pro after your junior year. But with continued development, such players can be solid contributors to a college ballclub by their junior or senior year. Again, a player redshirting doesn't take up any space; it just means they're not on the active 35-man roster. Once you enroll in college, your 5-year clock starts ticking. If at any time during those 5 years somebody is among the top 35 players looking to join the OSU baseball team, I say welcome aboard...

If I'm not mistaken, this whole thing got started by someone here speculating about how Casey might have felt while a speculative story broke with no facts. Then it just snowballed. Crazy!

I wasn't aware that Casey going elsewhere was a realistic possibility. Obviously many schools would like to have him - but I got the feeling he is an OSU lifer..... Sweet Jesus I hope so. If OSU is willing to do a trade how about Paul Mainieri for Pat Casey

IIRC, Pat interviewed for the Notre Dame job several years ago and turned it down when his son said something to the effect of we're not moving are we?

No thanks bayou. Pat Casey is a great coach, he is even a better person. The positive impact he will have on the kids in his program as well as those who support the team is substantial. What we have going on with OSU baseball is much larger than anything that can be measured in wins and losses.

To move this off the Casey topic and BACK to the players: one of the few needs amongst position players will be 1B. Gretler may return, and he'd certainly have a shot at 1B, though his 3B play has really grown. Taylor at 1B? Maybe. But don't overlook incoming juco transfer Sophomore Alex McGarry. Currently playing his 'normal' 1B position in WCL for Kelowna. OPS of .907 after 17 games....with Zero errors.

Excuse me but Notre Dame is nothing close to LSU. What you don't understand apparently is that to PC LSU is not close to Notre Dame. First, he is a devout Catholic and he went to South Bend for a serious interview. To my knowledge he hasn't officially interviewed anywhere else despite many offers. He considered their lucrative offer and turned it down because he and his family love it here. He traveled all over the country while he was a pro baseball player and considers it a blessing to make a decent living and live in the northwest. Secondly, you shouldn't be surprised that other programs who would offer more than LSU have made serious runs at hiring Casey and been turned down.
