You don't have to be a JS-hater to point out that the Michigan State is a horrible place to build your career. This is the school that enabled the physician working with the gymnasts (national team and their own) to molest countless young girls. (The school budgeted $400,000,000 to pay off the lawsuits.) The school stonewalled the Michigan AG office for years - and still does. And when a trustee attempted to get to the bottom of it, the administrators concocted a BS ethics violation in an attempt to have her removed - that has led to another couple million in legal fees. And that's just the most public scandals. There are other examples of a toxic culture in that administration and they have deeply impacted the relationships with boosters. It's a sick organization, and I agree with those who question whether JS was smart to take on that particular job. That's not malevolence or schadenfreude - that's just a reasonable opinion on a topic of public interest. What about bitch tits predecessor? That dude was dumb enough to have a phone thing with that Tracy gal.....it seems too crazy to be real

Lol dear lord Beaver Fans are unreal sometimes. So if thats your measuring stick Penn State, Iowa, and Wisky are terrible jobs. MSU has 3 Big 10 championships since 2000, 15 Bowl games, 1 college football playoffs appearance. Compare thst to...say...Oregon State. Michigan State has one of the biggest budgets in college football...the 12th highest revenue. Who would want that? What an idiot. But yeah he should have totally waited around on a sinking ship for that Bama or Michigan or Washington gig to open up 6 weeks later. Or better yet UCLA lol. Definitely think he could have got the Boise State gig. Not what I said at all. Penn St., Iowa & Wisky are all much better jobs. MSU is basically a .500 football team for the past 9 years. Plus their AD department is a mess with the Tucker fiasco. And their last conference title was in 2015. Not exactly relevant today. Add on unrealistic expectations and it's not a good P4 job. Michigan and Ohio St. recruit all of the best players from that region and are way ahead of them as top programs. So you bring up "better jobs" in terms of JS picking MSU... a job that was actually open and he was offered! Yet, I suppose your inside knowledge of all that's college athletics will assert he would have been offered... UW? or?? MSU was the best job he was offered and better than OSU's situation as pointed out previously. "How" is valid. "Where" is not.

The jobs the poster compared MSU to are better jobs. Unless you think Penn St. and Iowa are equivalent to MSU, both of which have much more recent sustained success. Maybe you should read the thread again.

In my lifetime up through the 2023 football season I never cared one bit about Michigan state football. About a year later still dont.

" if you think his “best and right move” was the MSU job, you’re nuts. That is a terrible job playing little brother to Michigan and Ohio St. His problem was impatience. He took the first job available. There were better jobs that came open later."
And they were? And, JS would have been a sure candidate? Most of the "better jobs" were in flux about the same time as MSU was wooing/offering. And, even more so by the time he actually signed on the dotted line. Behind the scenes agents know what is going on, and all the possibilities are out there. He advanced himself... albeit in a socially inept way.
So as another poster pointed out MSU the program has had a far superior recent history, and your "little brother" analogy seems to be very similar to where he left. It's the B10, MSU regularly in the Top 30-35 in the country with "leftovers". I'm betting rarely out of the Top 50 in recruiting. B10 is rich recruiting grounds with a pull for talent from all over. It's a superior job to what he had, and he was actually wanted. The huge change that will effect ALL schools similar to MSU is the new 105 roster limit and the ability to give full or partial rides. the "leftovers" will become far less. Although the portal may become even more active?!
The other schools mentioned were not possible openings but factual comparison that MSU is not a terrible program or job to take. Again, maybe you need to reread and of course your insider knowledge says he was "impatient". FWIW that's supposition... not fact.
Whether he will be successful is a completely different issue. And, what is "success" at MSU now? If boosters/fans think B10 titles, or regular CFP appearances they are in the same category as Husker fans. Neither will ever be Top15-30 teams on any regular basis.

What I keep coming back to is that MSU wasn't just any open coaching job, it was a job that came open mid-season, in the midst of a scandal.
At that point in time, the number of successful college coaches that were actively looking for a new job were exactly 0.
MSU had to quietly put feelers out and gauge interest. I have no doubt that there were lots of coaches who said that they could talk after the season was over and they weren't so focused on their current team.
But not JS. He couldn't wait to bail, not only this program, but on his current players when they were in the midst of a championship run.
He would have lost nothing by waiting til the end of the season. Hell, he would have lost nothing if he got picky and waited a whole 'nother year. His market value was already high and wasn't going anywhere, especially when we were clearly going to have a much easier schedule this year.
Bigtime sports is a selfish business. I get it. But Smitty displayed a peak level of selfishness that is remarkable even in this cut throat profession.
Screw him.

I'll take it one step further....bitch tits was already looking for his next opp as soon as he inked a deal to be OSU's coach..... While I appreciate that he brought us back from the ashes that GAG left us in, he was only using OSU as a springboard.....ZERO loyalty to his Alma Mater, who gave a walk on, with a chip on shoulder, a chance. Bottomline......he was finalizing his deal with east landfill while we were prepping for the last Pac 12 CW, and the team knew......I will never forgive him for that. Like you said Jimbeav, selfish.....he burned his Corvallis bridges, period ....F him
