What about Texas State Bobcats? They acquitted themselves very well against ASU last night, and it keeps the State Farm / All State "PacState" Conference trend Halfway between San Antonio and Austin, so you get both markets??? I realize they would be making the jump from FBS... This was mostly just to make the "State" school joke Dang, they have 40,000 students! Just add a little fee to each one and they will have a new stadium ASAP They are already in the FBS. They went from FCS to FBS in 2012. They are currently in the Sun Belt Conference.

Why go all the way to Memphis and Tulane... Why not just add a texas pod and call it good for now: Texas State -- R1 in 2027 UTSA -- Already R1 North Texas -- Already R1 Rice -- Already R1
Some good baseball in there to boot

The more I've looked at Texas State, the more intrigued I become. There is some question about football success and the ability to sustain it. Agree that it is in a great location, not far from San Antonio and about an hour or so from Austin. Nice stadium, haven't checked the capacity but I assume it's not an issue. Gives the Pac-12 the very important (IMO) Texas footprint. And if SMU becomes available at some point, the territories don't overlap at all. I guess it would boil down to would it be a better addition than UTSA?

But the Bobcats' best season was last year when they went 8-5 with a bowl win over Rice. They lost in a close game to UTSA. UTSA has gone something like 12-2, 11-3 and 9-3 the past three seasons (those are from memory, pretty sure I got the wins right but might not be 100 on the losses). Neither school has a long football history.

They invest very little in their football program and it is a really small school.

They competed very well with ASU and the talking heads on that the game said they were one of the top 5 G5 teams in the country. Boise, Texas St. and other one that I can't remember.

Rice has a $7B endowment. There's money there. I'm not sure if a Pac-6 invite is enough to mobilize donors for athletics, but they've endowed several coaching positions in olympic sports recently.
I wouldn't get hung up on who is good now or who is bad now. Need to look longer term here. COULD they be good? Probably, if given the right platform. They were a bowl team last season. Rice is an R1 research institution and an AAU school, for the people who care about that stuff in conference realignment.
I don't HATE the idea. I don't hate any idea. Give me a group of teams, preferably in the western US, that all want to compete and have the resources to do so. Let's roll.

I hope we can form a new conference with teams all west of the Rockies. Going forward the travel piece is going to be big and it can be a strong point for us. Cal, Stanford, UNLV, Reno, USU, SJSU and others. While maybe not the glamour of the old Pac 12, we have a solid , logical travel footprint and almost lockup an entire time zone.
