Through the first 12 regular season games in 2023, Wyoming had higher viewership than Vandy, SMU, Fresno, San Diego State, Air Force, New Mexico, and the three Mountain West viewership bottom-dwellers of Hawaii, Nevada, and Utah State. Or to say another way, highest viewership Mountain West teams 2023: 1. Colorado State 2. Boise State 3. San Jose State 4. UNLV 5. Wyoming
A small percentage of a huge media market is often much larger than a huge percentage of a tiny media market.Wyoming played Texas Tech on National TV the first week and then followed it up by playing Texas. Think that had anything to do with their 2023 numbers? .Yes

Some random thoughts:
* The selection of expansion schools is likely based on how committed they are to grow and expand both academically and athletically. There may be question marks around that commitment level when it comes to the MWC teams that we didn't invite.
* Getting to 6 teams, but not all the way to 8, keeps us in an excellent position to remain flexible for any further upheaval in the college athletics landscape. I could see us standing pat for another year with just these teams while we wait to see what goes down with the ACC and the House settlement. If we start to get too close to the 2026 deadline, it should be fairly easy to attract 2 more MWC teams if we must. Waiting til the last minute to add 2 more teams is doable, but not so much if we try to add 6 all at once. I like getting some stability ironed out early.
* We're now in a position to have serious discussions about a real-life media contract. All discussions up to this point would have been theoretical, but now people can start discussing real numbers. And the theoretical discussions can move to discussions about very specific programs, and what they would add to our potential viewership.
* I think we will hear about a media deal before we add any more teams. I won't be surprised to have something similar to the Big-12, where we can add X teams to the conference and still keep the same per-team payout.
* Overall, I like the move. We are still playing the sh!tty hands that we are dealt, about as well as we possibly can....

Are the cougs even a part of this? I went to wsucougars.com and the lead was a women's soccer game against Georgia Southern.

President Kirk Schulz is retiring in nine months, and the Athletic Director, Anne McCoy has been on the job less than three months. Jayathi Murthy & Scott Barnes may be captaining the ship at the moment.

Last year, Colorado State finished second in the Mountain West. In 2021, Colorado State finished second to Boise. Boise and Colorado State were 1-2 or 2-1 every year. San Diego State puts up mostly consistent numbers but is trending the wrong way. Fresno put up good numbers the last two years but had an awful 2021. CSU was first among MWC teams last year. Boise State was the only MWC program that could get somewhat decent numbers based at least in part on its brand. During the 2010s Boise was neck and neck with BYU in national TV viewership outside of the P5 teams. CSU got a huge boost in playing (paper tiger) Colorado, otherwise they are an afterthought in the Denver market. TBH I am surprised that CSU was invited over UNLV, but UNLV suffers from the same issue of being a small fish in a big pond. They have been successful the last 2 years but will they bring in viewers with all the other sports in that market long term?. They do not have the track record of being a strong long-term football program.

I hope your just joking because I remember how many of us were angry that when we found out that Washington and Oregon jumped ship leaving the rest to tumble like Dominoes , all except for OSU and WSU leaving their futures in question . Whoever is left in the life boat that is now the MWC must be feeling the same way Sucks for them, but there is no obligation for us to be martyrs. This is a solid situation with plenty of upside potential Agreed, sucks for their fans. Some of them are whining and crying, They hate the Pac-12 now and are pissed. Well too bad suckers, that is life and find your own solution to you own problems. We control the pac-12 now. Come beg to join, ha!

One of the best articles I've read in a while. Duck fans get off that high horse. This is not the same situation as to what they did to us. "They had a home, and chose to leave it." We were floundering at sea. What a great synthesis of my exact thoughts on this. F-Cal, Stanford, Oregon, Washington fans daring to call us out on this. How dare those mutha-f%#*ers.

They showed they were willing to schedule big games. Keep that up, and they'll keep getting eyeballs. My hope is, if we keep getting "the best of the rest", there will be plenty of curiosity and increased viewership for the whole league.

Agree 100%. I can stand this whole s%#t-show. Watching the pre-game for first Big college game of the year this year - Maybe FSU v Miami (or some Florida school vs another) and Booger McFarland said "Miami has put together the best team money can buy....". This turns my stomach. Regardless of what the MW or PAC do - there are going to be semi-pro teams and college teams. Eventually the BIG12 will be cherry picked and relegated - and the SEC and B1G will basically be semi-pro - with little pretense of being college teams other than the names/uniforms. Everyone else will be the JV squad and serve as a minor league for the Semi-Pros. Any good prospects will be poached from the JV's for the foreseeable future. Even if the NCAA throws the PAC-whatever a bone and calls us a P5 school - it is pretty unlikely that many outside of the semi-pro's will be able to compete on an NIL level with the semi-pro teams. Now, the NCAA COULD help by creating some stricter transfer rules - but they are gutless cowards and will not do so.
I will always root for the Beavs and will support the new league in whatever form it eventually takes. But I will root even harder for the collapse of the semi-pro teams. The NCAA tried to limit transfers to one freebee and the second one would require the player to sit out a year. This was shot down by the courts. That is not an issue to blame them for. I think there is a concept of a plan to fix the issue

I guess my thing with CSU is I just really feel meh about the Rams as a football add. Yeah, CSU was actually really good during a stretch from 1994-2002 and had another pretty good stretch from 2013-17 but a lot of not so great seasons before and after those periods. And just not very good in the last six seasons. When you look at Boise State and its football success and Fresno State's football success and then SDSU in basketball and budget, it's obvious that the Pac-12 is adding three power conference level schools. Not quite with CSU. And that's the whole thing. To me, if this rebuilt Pac-12 is going to really work, a lot of it hangs on grabbing teams that have the capability of succeeding on the football field/basketball court, to draw tv viewers and build national respect. But they probably see some good growth potential with CSU and who knows? The Rams could return to some football success.
